Thus, the detailed knowledge of the kinetics of OH reactions is crucial in combustion and atmospheric research. In this work, an experimental approach for time-resolved studies of OH radical reactions at high pressures with pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence was revised and the reactions of dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxymethane with OH radicals were investigated in detail. The results reveal a deeper insight into the reaction processes of ether compounds with OH in general, contributing to a better understanding of the combustion of different biofuels and fuel additives.

Book excerpt: CF has been detected using frequency doubled dye laser radiation (rather than the Raman shifted dye laser radiation reported previously). Radiative lifetime studies have not yet been completed; pulsed production methods of CF have been used to show that conditions can be found under which it will be possible to measure reaction kinetics of the CF + O bimolecular reaction. The pulsed Fourier transform infrared emission spectrometer is now complete and is undergoing tests. A dedicated fast transient digitiser is being built and the interface to a micrometer is complete: this will enable us to take time resolved interferograms of the emission and transform these to obtain time resolved spectra of the ir active components. A graduate student is working full time on this project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New developments in remote sensing, communications, energy systems and other areas of interest depend upon advances in laser technology. Chemical or transfer laser systems hold promise of fulfilling many of these needs. The development of new and better chemical laser systems, however, awaits increased understanding and knowledge of the reactive and spectral characteristics of candidate molecules. The research under this grant has concentrated on obtaining a detailed understanding of metal-oxidant and metal-halogen reactions. Photon yields and product state branching ratios have been determined for many reactions. In many cases it was necessary to develop basic spectroscopic information on the electronically excited product molecules. In the course of these studies, other molecules of atmospheric, combustion, or chemical laser interest also came under scrutiny, and molecular constants were obtained. Various diatomic molecular species have been produced in vacuum flow systems; typically metal vapor entrained in an inert gas is reacted with a halogen or oxidant. These exothermic reactions produce product molecules in excited states whose fluorescence (chemiluminescence) is analyzed. Laser induced fluorescence (photoluminescence) is also used to probe both ground and excited electronic states. The following research summary is organized according to experimental technique. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reactive Intermediates in the Gas Phase: Generation and Monitoring covers methods for reactive intermediates in the gas phase. The book discusses the generation and measurement of atom and radical concentrations in flow systems; the high temperature flow tubes, generation and measurement of refractory species; and the electronically excited long-lived states of atoms and diatomic molecules in flow systems. The text also describes the production and detection of reactive species with lasers in static systems; the production of small positive ions in a mass spectrometer; and the discharge-excited rare gas halide lasers. Chemists, physicists, and people working in aerochem laboratories will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the work sponsored by grant AFOSR 80-0061 was to study the highly exoergic gas phase reactions of boron atoms. The main goal of these studies is to obtain a basic understanding of exoergic reactions of non metal atoms. These types of reactions play a fundamental role in fields such as combustion, plasma chemistry, laser induced chemistry and chemical lasers. We have completed rate and chemiluminescence studies of boron atom reactions with most of the important oxygen containing molecules of interest. From the results of these studies we are now able to suggest a qualitative model that may explain the nature of these reactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on studying the intrinsic properties of some fluorescent dyes and their complexes in the gas phase, while eliminating external interactions with solvent molecules. A novel setup, which couples a trapping mass spectrometer to lasers as excitation sources, is used to perform photodissociation and fluorescence experiments on isolated, mass-selected ions. The common fluorescent dye fluorescein and halogenated fluorescein ions in the gas phase show very different fluorescence and photodissociation properties than in solution: the most fluorescent charge state in solution, the dianion, does not emit detectable fluorescence in the gas phase; in addition, the most stable monoanionic form of fluorescein in the gas phase has a protonated carboxyphenol pendant group rather than protonation on the hydroxyl group of the chromophore as found in solution. Building blocks of xanthene dyes, pyronin Y and pyronin B ions, exhibit much longer intrinsic fluorescence lifetimes in the gas phase than in solution, mostly owing to a substantial decrease in nonradiative decay rates. Gas-phase studies on more complex systems are done on gaseous noncovalent complexes of pyronin Y with a macrocyclic molecule cucurbit[7]uril and polypeptides covalently labelled by a BoDIPY dye and quencher tryptophan. Fluorescence properties of the gaseous noncovalent pyronin Y and cucurbit[7]uril complex suggest interaction of these dyes with macrocycle cucurbit[7]uril plays a relatively minor role in their photophysics compared to interactions with solvent molecules. Fluorescence properties of dye labeled polypeptides show that quenching is more sensitive to the type of repeating unit, alanine or glycine, than the presence (or location) of quencher tryptophan. Taken together, this thesis presents benchmark results on the intrinsic photophysics of key fluorophore classes and lays essential groundwork for the use fluorescence in investigations of intrinsic properties of more complex systems such as biomolecules. Overall, the work reported in this thesis serves as a proof-of-concept work demonstrating the applicability of coupling modified trapping mass spectrometer and optical spectroscopy set-ups to study the intrinsic properties of ions.
