Book excerpt: Laser Doppler velocimeter techniques have been investigated for nonintrusive measurements of cone boundary-layer mean-velocity profiles in supersonic flow. The investigation was performed in the AEDC Supersonic Wind Tunnel (A) at a free-stream Mach number of 4, using olive-oil droplets to seed the tunnel flow. The basis for the evaluation of the LDV results was a set of velocity profiles obtained using conventional probing techniques. Laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers on a 7-deg (half-angle) sharp-cone model were included in this study. The results obtained in this investigation demonstrate that mean-velocity profiles can be obtained within acceptable limits of uncertainty provided (1) seed particles of appropriate size are found in tunnel flow or can be added to the flow and (2) a systematic editing procedure is available, when the results are evaluated, to eliminate velocities of relatively low probability and effects of spurious noise. Part I of this work was a detailed analysis of the mean flow as observed using Pitot-tube, Preston-tube, and floating-element balance instrumentation. The present work (Part II) is a description of both the mean and the fluctuating components of the flow, and of the Reynolds stress as observed using a dual forward-scattering laser-Doppler velocimenter. A detailed description of the instrument, and of the data analysis techniques, have been included in order to fully document the data. A detailed comparison is made between the laser-Doppler results and those presented in Part I, and an assessment is made of the ability of the laser-Doppler velocimeter to measure the details of the flows involved.

Book excerpt: An advanced laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV), deemed the 'comprehensive LDV', is designed to acquire fully-resolved turbulence structural measurements in high Reynolds number two- and three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers. The new instrument combines, for the first time, new techniques allowing for the direct measurement of particle acceleration and sub-measurement-volume-scale position resolution so that second-order 3D particle trajectories may be measured at high repetitions. Using these measurements, several terms in the Reynolds stress transport equations may be directly estimated, giving new data for modeling and understanding the processes leading to the transport of turbulence in boundary layer flows. Measurements utilizing the CompLDV technologies are presented and include turbulence dissipation rate and fluctuating velocity-pressure gradient correlations that have been measured in 2D and 3D turbulent boundary layers using the unique capabilities of the 'comprehensive' LDV. Many of these measurements are the first of their kind ever acquired in high Reynolds number turbulent flows. The flat-plate turbulent boundary layer is studied at several Reynolds numbers up to Re-theta ~7500 to examine Reynolds numbers effects on terms such as the velocity-pressure gradient correlation and the dissipation rate in the Reynolds transport equations. Measurements are also presented in a pressure-driven three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer created upstream from a wing-body junction. The current results complement the extensive data from previous studies and provide even richer depth of knowledge on the most completely-documented 3D boundary layer flow in existence. Further measurements include the effects of high free-stream turbulence on flat plate turbulent boundary layers and a wing/body junction flow that is similar to a gas turbine flow.

Book excerpt: Measurements of the turbulent fluxes of momentum, heat, and salinity in the oceanic boundary layer are difficult to obtain, as both a stable platform and high-resolution instrumentation are required. The overall objective of the present investigation, was to develop a boundary layer instrumentation system capable of measuring turbulent fluxes in the marginal ice zone environment. This investigation focuses on a feasibility study toward development of a diode laser Doppler velocimeter (DLDV) to be used as the velocity sensor for a high-resolution velocity/temperature/conductivity cluster, with a spatial resolution of 1 to 2 cm. Phase I findings show very promising results for the DLDV in laboratory environments. Measurements in a pipe flow facility demonstrated very distinctive Doppler burst signals, with more than adequate signal-to-noise ratio, even in clean tap water passed through a 10 micrometer filter. Excellent burst density was observed when a small quantity of Puget Sound water was added to the tap water. For all practical purposes, the performance of the DLDV is at least as good as that of a well-established LDV system using a helium-neon laser as the light source.
