Book excerpt: The design and performance of a photon counting, two-channel spectroscopic system using the 6-W, 448-nm line of a cw argon ion laser is described. The two channels are formed by use of cylindrical optics and special slit mirrors set up following the exit slit of a conventional double spectrometer. The system is capable of dynamic, simultaneous measurements of either the concentrations of two gas species in cold flow or the temperature and concentration of a single gas species, such as N2, in a flame. Measurements are accomplished by recording the intensities of two spontaneous rotational Raman lines with spectral bandwidths between 0.04 and 0.08 nm. Up to 4096 samples (or reads from each of the two channels) can be recorded by a dedicated minicomputer at rates up to 10 kHz. Studies of a CH4 diffusion flame at sampling rates of 20 to 100 Hz and a room-temperature, axisymmetric C02 jet at rates up to 2.0 kHz were carried out. Analysis of the data from these studies include mean and rms profiles, probability density functions (pdf's), power spectral density functions, autocorrelation functions, cross correlation functions, and determinations of skewness and kurtosis in the pdf's and the C02 fluctuations.

Book excerpt: A two-dimensional laser Doppler anemometer was designed to take measurements in a ducted coaxial flow system having a centerbody separating the jets. The measurements, made in isothermal flow, can be categorized as: central jet only (C02); annular jet only (air); and, combined central and annular jet flow. Radial profiles of the axial and radial/azimuthal velocity were obtained. The central jet only condition approximates a free jet since the central jet diameter is much smaller than the centerbody or duct diameter (1:29.3: 53.2). Measurements of the jet development (diameter, turbulence intensity, etc.) were compared with previous free jet studies. In a study of the isotropy of the turbulent fluctuations it was determined that fully developed turbulent flow begins further downstream than anticipated. Velocity profiles were combined with gas sampling measurements to ascertain jet entrainment. Results show a linear growth of the entrained mass starting at the entrance plane. Downstream (20 diameters) the rate of growth increases to match past studies in that region. The annular jet flow creates a recirculation vortex in the wake of the centerbody. The flowfield was mapped and the streamlines describing the flow were obtained throughout the recirculating flow and further downstream. The location and strength of the vortex center was determined. Velocity scanes were combined to obtain profiles of the average radial and azimuthal components that were directly measured. The interaction of the recirculating annular air jet and the central get was examined. Profiels of the velocity field were obtained for several central jet flow conditions. A normalization plot of the location of the central jet stagnation location agreed well with earlier measurements using a one-dimensional laser doppler anemometer and a different central jet nozzle.

Book excerpt: Finite-difference numerical computations are presented to predict the isothermal, turbulent, recirculating flowfields in a centerbody combustor configuration which involves confined dual coaxial jet mixing in the near-wake region of an axisymmetric bluff body. Calculations based upon the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the k-epsilon turbulence model consider the influence of the annular and central flow rates on the nature of the flowfield downstream of the bluff body. The reported isothermal modeling calculations are performed with the 'Teaching Elliptic Axisymmetrical Characteristics Heuristically' (TEACH) Code. Numerical results show the influence of the annular and central jet flow rates on the distributions of the mean and rms velocity fields and centerline locations of stagnation points. The sensitivity of the predicted results to several aspects of the modeling is considered. The predicted results demonstrate the complexity of flowfield interactions in the near-wake region and refine the understanding of the centerbody combustor flowfields. The character of the recirculating flowfield emerging from the numerical predictions when the near-wake is dominated by the annular jet is in conformity with experimental observations.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of high-speed flows represents a challenging problem in the fluid dynamics field due to the presence of chemical reactions and non-equilibrium effects. Hypersonic flights, where speeds reach Mach 5 and above, are particularly influenced by these effects, resulting in a direct impact on the flow and consequently on the aerodynamic performance of a vehicle traveling at these speeds. The study of hypersonic flow conditions requires the experimental capability of determining local temperatures, pressures and velocities using non-intrusive techniques. Furthermore, the simultaneous measurement of two or more variables in a complex flow boosts the amount of information that is obtained since valuable correlations can be established. This research includes the design, construction and characterization of a hypersonic flow apparatus explicitly intended as a tool for advanced laser diagnostics development. This apparatus is characterized by its pulsed operation mode that translates into a significant reduction in mass flow rates and can be operated for long periods at Mach numbers ranging from 2.8 to 6.2. The flow conditions during the uniform flow time interval of each pulse vary by less than 1%, generating a flow of sufficient quality for quantitative measurements. The development of a laser diagnostic technique, the VENOM technique, which is a non-intrusive method to provide simultaneous 2-D measurements of the mean and instantaneous fluctuations in two-component velocity and temperature is also presented. This technique represents the first single diagnostic capable of instantaneous two-component velocimetry and thermometry in a gaseous flow field by combining two Nitric Oxide Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence methods: two-component Molecular Tagging Velocimetry and two-line thermometry, employing the nascent NO(v"=1) arising from the NO2 photodissociation as a molecular tracer. The VENOM technique is expected to be not only applicable to cold high-speed flows, which is the focus of the present work, but also to combustion and other reactive or high-enthalpy flow fields.

Book excerpt: This LDRD was a Sandia Fellowship that supported Andrea Hsu's PhD research at Texas A & M University and her work as a visitor at Sandia's Combustion Research Facility. The research project at Texas A & M University is concerned with the experimental characterization of hypersonic (Mach>5) flowfields using experimental diagnostics. This effort is part of a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) and is a collaboration between the Chemistry and Aerospace Engineering departments. Hypersonic flight conditions often lead to a non-thermochemical equilibrium (NTE) state of air, where the timescale of reaching a single (equilibrium) Boltzmann temperature is much longer than the timescale of the flow. Certain molecular modes, such as vibrational modes, may be much more excited than the translational or rotational modes of the molecule, leading to thermal-nonequilibrium. A nontrivial amount of energy is therefore contained within the vibrational mode, and this energy cascades into the flow as thermal energy, affecting flow properties through vibrational-vibrational (V-V) and vibrational-translational (V-T) energy exchanges between the flow species. The research is a fundamental experimental study of these NTE systems and involves the application of advanced laser and optical diagnostics towards hypersonic flowfields. The research is broken down into two main categories: the application and adaptation of existing laser and optical techniques towards characterization of NTE, and the development of new molecular tagging velocimetry techniques which have been demonstrated in an underexpanded jet flowfield, but may be extended towards a variety of flowfields. In addition, Andrea's work at Sandia National Labs involved the application of advanced laser diagnostics to flames and turbulent non-reacting jets. These studies included quench-free planar laser-induced fluorescence measurements of nitric oxide (NO) and mixture fraction measurements via Rayleigh scattering.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of military style exhaust nozzles to further understand their acoustic characteristics has been the recent focus of the Pennsylvania State University high-speed jet aeroacoustics facility. Advanced measurement techniques are required to study the turbulence characteristics of the flow field. Development of a laser Doppler velocimetry system would allow for these measurements to be made non-intrusively.Development of the laser Doppler velocimetry system required research and testing of each component as it was placed into the system. Development was split into two portions: fundamental or basic concepts and components, and advanced components. During these stages, many components, such as the transmitting and receiving probes, were fabricated, procedures were developed, and calibration of the transmitting probe was completed.Once the development stages were complete, the laser Doppler velocimetry system was used to measure subsonic flows of a cold air exhaust jet. Velocity measurements proved to be accurate to within 2% of calculated jet Mach numbers with discrepancies of up to 6% at Mach numbers approaching 1 at x/D of 2. Comparison of axial turbulence intensity data to previous studies yielded less favorable result possibly due to use of the exhaust fan, but this hypothesis cannot be proven without more experiments.Parametric studies were also on the ratio of the injection pressure ratio to the nozzle pressure ratio and the exhaust fan power determine their effects of seeding on measurement values. It was determined that ratio of the injection pressure ratio to the nozzle pressure ratio had negligible effect on the measurements except at a value of 1 where the axial turbulence intensity was up to 6% different than the other measurements. However, the ratio was found to have an inverse relationship to the number of validated burst particles per unit time. The power of the exhaust fan created differences in the measurement of up to 3% at x/D greater than 6, with higher values of Mach number and lower values of axial turbulence intensity at the exhaust fan power of 15%. However, it is difficult to draw conclusions with only two sets of data.

Book excerpt: This Festschrift is a collection of essays contributed by students, colleagues, and ad mirers to honor an eminent scholar on a special anniversary: Charles Hard Townes on the occasion of his 80th birthday, July 28, 1995. In 1964, Townes shared the Nobel Prize in physics with Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov and Nikolai Gen nadyevich Basov "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle. " His contributions have covered a much wider area, however. His fruitful interests spanning several decades have included many scientific subjects, includ ing, microwave spectroscopy and astrophysics (other articles in this volume will expand further on this point). He has also contributed to public service, having served as the chairman of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee for NASA's Apollo program, and as a member and vice chairman of the President's Science Advisory Committee. As the enormous breadth of contributions from his students shows, he has educated scholars who are now in a wide range of fields. The contributions from his many admirers, among whom are nine fellow Nobel laureates, attest to his impact on many disciplines ranging from electrical engi neering to medicine. His influence extends even to theology, as is indicated by one essay. The broadly international character of this Festschrift reflects his deep belief in the international, universal nature of science.
