Book Synopsis Capture and Control of Laser-Accelerated Proton Beams by :
Download or read book Capture and Control of Laser-Accelerated Proton Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the ongoing studies on the possibilities for transport and RF capture of laser-accelerated proton beams in conventional accelerator structures. First results on the capture of laser-accelerated proton beams are presented, supported by Trace3D, CST particle studio and Warp simulations. Based on these results, the development of the pulsed high-field solenoid is guided by our desire to optimize the output particle number for this highly divergent beam with an exponential energy spectrum. A future experimental test stand is proposed to do studies concerning the application as a new particle source.
Book Synopsis Investigations of Field Dynamics in Laser Plasmas with Proton Imaging by : Thomas Sokollik
Download or read book Investigations of Field Dynamics in Laser Plasmas with Proton Imaging written by Thomas Sokollik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-driven proton beams are still in their infancy but already have some outstanding attributes compared to those produced in conventional accelerators. One such attribute is the typically low beam emittance. This allows excellent resolution in imaging applications like proton radiography. This thesis describes a novel imaging technique - the proton streak camera - that the author developed and first used to measure both the spatial and temporal evolution of ultra-strong electrical fields in laser-driven plasmas. Such investigations are of paramount importance for the understanding of laser-plasma interactions and, thus, for optimization of laser-driven particle acceleration. In particular, the present work investigated micrometer-sized spherical targets after laser irradiation. The confined geometry of plasmas and fields was found to influence the kinetic energy and spatial distribution of accelerated ions. This could be shown both in experimental radiography images and and in numerical simulations, one of which was selected for the cover page of Physical Review Letters.

Download or read book Investigation of Laser-driven Particle Acceleration for the Development of Tunable Ion Sources for Applications in High Energy Density Science written by Raspberry Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the innovation of chirped pulse amplification by Donna Strickland and Gerard Morou in 1985, laser technology has evolved such that we can create short pulses of light (10−15 − 10−12 seconds) with high peak powers (1015 Watts) in small, focused spots (∼a few microns). A prolific area of research that has emerged over the last two decades is the use of these high-intensity lasers to drive particle beams. Possible applications of these particle sources include isotope production for medical applications, proton cancer therapy, and fusion energy schemes. This thesis focuses on laser-driven proton acceleration and adds to the existing foundation of work in the area by investigating new empirical relationships, conducting new measurements of the accelerating electric field responsible for laser-driven proton acceleration, and developing a new data analysis methodology using machine learning. This work first examines laser-driven proton acceleration in the multi-picosecond regime (>1ps) at laser intensities of 1017 - 1019 W/cm2. This is motivated by recent results on laser platforms like the National Ignition Facility-Advanced Radiographic Capability laser and the OMEGA-Extended Performance laser, which have demonstrated enhanced accelerated proton energies when compared to established scaling laws. A detailed scaling study was performed on the Titan laser, which provided the basis for a new analytical scaling presented in this thesis. In addition, high-repetition-rate (HRR) lasers that can operate at 1 Hz or faster are now coming online around the world, opening a myriad of opportunities for accelerating the rate of learning on laser-driven particle experiments. To unlock these applications, HRR diagnostics combined with real-time analysis tools must be developed to process experimental measurements and outputs at HRR. Towards this goal, this thes is presents a novel automated data analysis framework based on machine learning and proposes a new methodology based on representation learning to integrate heterogeneous data constrain parameters that are not directly measurable. Taken together, these thrusts enable a new preliminary framework for enhanced analysis of complex HRR experiments and a foundational step towards realizing the goal of tunable laser-driven particle sources.

Book Synopsis Advanced Laser Particle Accelerator Development at LANL by :
Download or read book Advanced Laser Particle Accelerator Development at LANL written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-plasma accelerated ion and electron beam sources are an emerging field with vast prospects, and promise many superior applications in a variety of fields such as hadron cancer therapy, compact radioisotope generation, table-top nuclear physics, laboratory astrophysics, nuclear forensics, waste transmutation, SN M detection, and inertial fusion energy. LANL is engaged in several projects seeking to develop compact high current and high energy ion and electron sources. We are especially interested in two specific applications: ion fast ignition/capsule perturbation and radiation oncology in conjunction with our partners at the ForschungsZentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (FZD). Laser-to-beam conversion efficiencies of over 10% are needed for practical applications, and we have already shown inherent etliciencies of>5% from flat foils, on Trident using only a 5th of the intensity and energy of the Nova Petawatt. With clever target designs, like structured curved cone targets, we have also been able to achieve major ion energy gains, leading to the highest energy laser-accelerated proton beams in the world. These new target designs promise to help usher in the next generation of particle sources realizing the potential of laser-accelerated beams.
Book Synopsis Warp Simulations for Capture and Control of Laser-accelerated Proton Beams by :
Download or read book Warp Simulations for Capture and Control of Laser-accelerated Proton Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capture of laser-accelerated proton beams accompanied by co-moving electrons via a solenoid field has been studied with particle-in-cell simulations. The main advantages of the Warp simulation suite that was used, relative to envelope or tracking codes, are the possibility of including all source parameters energy resolved, adding electrons as second species and considering the non-negligible space-charge forces and electrostatic self-fields. It was observed that the influence of the electrons is of vital importance. The magnetic effect on the electrons out balances the space-charge force. Hence, the electrons are forced onto the beam axis and attract protons. Besides the energy dependent proton density increase on axis, the change in the particle spectrum is also important for future applications. Protons are accelerated/decelerated slightly, electrons highly. 2/3 of all electrons get lost directly at the source and 27% of all protons hit the inner wall of the solenoid.
