Enfrentado en ocasiones al gusto por la regularidad, es completamente ajeno, sin embargo, al gusto por el desorden. Ocurrió que las pinturas de paisajes realizadas en el siglo XVII demostraron, en el XVIII, que la belleza no dependía sólo de la regularidad. Entonces se descubrió que los distintos elementos del cuadro se podían conciliar, procurando el equilibrio del conjunto, sin renunciar al contraste y la variedad. En poco tiempo la pintoresca irregularidad de los paisajes pintados se trasladó al diseño de jardines y edificios, representando la libertad natural y la honestidad, privacidad y funcionalidad. La regularidad, finalmente, perdió buena parte del poder que tuvo en otros momentos de la historia para representar el orden de las cosas. Es verdad que el orden tiende a ocultarse en el arte. Cuando se defendía el orden frente a la libertad, se confundía la libertad con el capricho; cuando se defendía la libertad frente al orden, se confundía el orden con la receta. La libertad del artista creador, que configuraba sus edificios sujetándose supuestamente a los usos, se enfrentaba a los límites de la forma. La función debía siempre imponerse. A pesar de todo, y puesto que la pura informalidad es inconcebible, se generaron nuevas formas, nuevos órdenes formales, también fundados en configuraciones naturales. Dichas formas se han denominado topológicas. En este libro veremos que, a pesar de la confusión que introdujo el término topología, las formas se siguieron recreando en el arte. Y lo hicieron, de nuevo, imitando la naturaleza.
