Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume twelve scholars explore ways in which drawings were employed and appreciated in various European Cities form late medieval times, through the Renaissance and Reformation periods and into the early seventeenth century. The essayists examine the relationship between preparatory sketches and finished artworks in more durable and expensive materials, and consider the roles played by various drawing types, such as studies from different kinds of model and student copies from a master’s exemplar. They also investigate how drawings and their mechanically- reproduced equivalents- engravings, etchings and other forms of print – came to be collected for both practical and connoisseurial purposes, and how iconographical and stylistic inventiveness were linked to imaginative artistic interpretations of traditional subjects and to technical innovations in drawing and printmaking. Through diverse approaches to the study of artists’ attitudes and ambitions, the essays in Drawing 1400-1600 offer ways of appreciating the complex and fascinating history of the practice and theory of drawing over two centuries during which the expressive potential of the medium was realized in some of the greatest artistic statements of all time.

Book Synopsis The Autumn of the Middle Ages by : Johan Huizinga

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is the first full translation into English of one of the 20th century's few undoubted classics of history." —Washington Post Book World The Autumn of the Middle Ages is Johan Huizinga's classic portrait of life, thought, and art in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century France and the Netherlands. Few who have read this book in English realize that The Waning of the Middle Ages, the only previous translation, is vastly different from the original Dutch, and incompatible will all other European-language translations. For Huizinga, the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century marked not the birth of a dramatically new era in history—the Renaissance—but the fullest, ripest phase of medieval life and thought. However, his work was criticized both at home and in Europe for being "old-fashioned" and "too literary" when The Waning of the Middle Ages was first published in 1919. In the 1924 translation, Fritz Hopman adapted, reduced and altered the Dutch edition—softening Huizinga's passionate arguments, dulling his nuances, and eliminating theoretical passages. He dropped many passages Huizinga had quoted in their original old French. Additionally, chapters were rearranged, all references were dropped, and mistranslations were introduced. This translation corrects such errors, recreating the second Dutch edition which represents Huizinga's thinking at its most important stage. Everything that was dropped or rearranged has been restored. Prose quotations appear in French, with translations preprinted at the bottom of the page, mistranslations have been corrected. "The advantages of the new translation are so many. . . . It is one of the greatest, as well as one of the most enthralling, historical classics of the twentieth century, and everyone will surely want to read it in the form that was obviously intended by the author." —Francis Haskell, New York Review of Books "A once pathbreaking piece of historical interpretation. . . . This new translation will no doubt bring Huizinga and his pioneering work back into the discussion of historical interpretation." —Rosamond McKitterick, New York Times Book Review
Book Synopsis The Books that Shaped Art History: From Gombrich and Greenberg to Alpers and Krauss by : Richard Shone
Download or read book The Books that Shaped Art History: From Gombrich and Greenberg to Alpers and Krauss written by Richard Shone and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exemplary survey that reassesses the impact of the most important books to have shaped art history through the twentieth century Written by some of today’s leading art historians and curators, this new collection provides an invaluable road map of the field by comparing and reexamining canonical works of art history. From Émile Mâle’s magisterial study of thirteenth-century French art, first published in 1898, to Hans Belting’s provocative Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art, the book provides a concise and insightful overview of the history of art, told through its most enduring literature. Each of the essays looks at the impact of a single major book of art history, mapping the intellectual development of the writer under review, setting out the premises and argument of the book, considering its position within the broader field of art history, and analyzing its significance in the context of both its initial reception and its afterlife. An introduction by John-Paul Stonard explores how art history has been forged by outstanding contributions to scholarship, and by the dialogues and ruptures between them.

Book Synopsis The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion by : Leo Steinberg
Download or read book The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion written by Leo Steinberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983, Leo Steinberg's classic work has changed the viewing habits of a generation. After centuries of repression and censorship, the sexual component in thousands of revered icons of Christ is restored to visibility. Steinberg's evidence resides in the imagery of the overtly sexed Christ, in Infancy and again after death. Steinberg argues that the artists regarded the deliberate exposure of Christ's genitalia as an affirmation of kinship with the human condition. Christ's lifelong virginity, understood as potency under check, and the first offer of blood in the circumcision, both required acknowledgment of the genital organ. More than exercises in realism, these unabashed images underscore the crucial theological import of the Incarnation. This revised and greatly expanded edition not only adduces new visual evidence, but deepens the theological argument and engages the controversy aroused by the book's first publication.
