The theory is one dimensional AND INCLUDES EFFECTS OF SPACE CHARGE AND CIRCUIT LOSS. Special attention is paid to interpretation of terms in equations for power balance. A running comparison is made with work of Tien, Rowe, and others. The circuit equations of Pierce and Bernier are compared, and it is shown how both yield the sa e nsw rs if symbols for physical quantities are properly interpreted. Space-charg forces are calculated from a compressible-block model, an extension of Tien's disk model with continuous charge distribution between disks. A simplified theory is derived, neglecting the effects of any backward-wave component on the circuit; resulting computations compare well with those of other theories. All quantities are normalized to cold-circui voltage rather than beam voltage. Using calculated large-signal data, saturation power and maximum RF bunching of the beam are st died as f nctions of space charge, loss, RF drive, injection velocity, and gain parameter C.

Harmonic currents and beam spread are found for a number of different situations. Closed-form solutions are being sought for the nonlinear equations. Beam stability in the presence of r-f and velocity distribution effects on the start-oscillation conditions of BWO's are two specific problems where these solutions are to be applied. Experimental programs to check these analyses are described. An appropriate taper on a ring-and-bar circuit for obtaining phase-focused operation is presented. Progress on the magnetron injection gun computer program is described. The trajectory starting problem appears to be solved, while further work on establishing the proper current density from the cathode is indicated. Provisions in the relativistic electron beam computer program for self-induced effects are also described. The status of the UHF helix-magnetron injection gun device is summarized. Performance data of the gun in a beam analyzer is presented. (Author).

The nonlinear theory for the solution of large-signal phenomena in microwave devices by a density function method has been checked. The Langmuir diode has been used as a test case. The agreement with the known results for this geometry is excellent. The work on a tube using a helix-type slow-wave circuit with two successive step changes in the phase velocity near the output end of the tube is described. The initial results are summarized. Cold test data on the ring-and-bar tube in the presence of a conducting shield around the slow-wave circuit has been obtained. These results are presented in detail in the form of a series of curves. The work on the nonlinear theory of multistream microwave devices by a density function method is summarized. An improved method of handling the coupling between positive and negative velocity regions was worked out. Experimental test results on several phase-focused tubes are presented. Efficiency enhancements obtained by this method as well as a simple depressed potential collector are described. The test results obtained on the ring-and-bar tube before it had to be rebuilt are also listed. Several additional minor changes made on the solid beam digital computer program are described. Futhermore the status of the program for solution of magnetron injection guns is discussed. (Author).
