Book excerpt: In recent years, the Internet has witnessed a significant increase in the popularity of video streaming systems for Video-on-Demand (VoD) or live streaming services. The large-scale content distribution of these systems has become increasingly prevalent and contributes to a significant portion of Internet traffic. Designing such a large scale, fast growing video streaming platform with high availability and scalability is technically challenging. Traditionally, it requires either a massive and costly computation, storage and network delivery infrastructure, or a peer-to-peer (P2P) strategy, which deploys local resources of participating users. To make it worse, the servers usually have to be over-provisioned for the peak load to serve the heterogeneous and dynamic user demands in a large scale with guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). The emergence of cloud computing however sheds new lights into this dilemma. A cloud platform offers reliable, elastic and cost-effective resource provisioning, which has been dramatically changing the way of enabling scalable and dynamic network services for large scale video streaming systems. First, cloud computing can provide an elastic service and scale the provisioned server resource online in a fine granularity. Second, the geo-distributed cloud sites can respond to the globalized request demands with the qualified service. Third, the cloud-assisted strategy is highly compatible with current prevalent P2P video streaming systems in a hybrid solution. Therefore, the cloud-assisted strategies for large scale video streaming systems call for the novel solutions to provide the cost-effective services. In this thesis, we tackle the design issues of cloud-assisted strategies. First, we propose a flexible cloud based provisioning strategy to serve highly time-varying demands in the P2P VoD systems. Then, leveraging the geo-distributed cloud services, we build a prototype of crowdsourced live streaming platform and explore the streaming quality under the influence of different cloud site leasing strategies. Synergizing the P2P and cloud resource, we model the combinational cost problem, and present an optimal solution and a distributed solution toward a scalable and cost effective service over the hybrid VoD streaming systems. Our analysis and experimental results demonstrate the superiority of proposed systematic solutions for the large scale video streaming systems.

We construct an analytical framework based on dynamic programming, to help us form an in-depth understanding of optimal strategies to design cache replacement algorithms. Second, we shift our attention to the surplus upload bandwidth allocation problem in multi-channel systems. Through theoretical analysis and realistic simulations, we conclude that surplus upload bandwidth from peers can be utilized more efficiently than conventional prefetching strategies when it is devoted to redistributing content to those channels in deficit state.

Bottlenecks are alleviated by distributing the work of the server to all participating peers. Content is no longer passed directly from the server to all clients but only to a small subset of peers from where it is forwarded to a different subset of clients. These basic P2P ideas can also be applied to the distribution of live content, such as video streams. Additional timing constraints and bandwidth requirements of this application context lead to new challenges. Peer failures or late arriving packets directly infuence the user perception, which is not the case in simple file distribution scenarios. This thesis first analyzes some of the major problems faced by P2P live media streaming, and then presents a new architecture to address these challenges. Starting from a tree-based approach, the architecture is enhanced with adaptation algorithms to finally evolve in a mesh-based system. The in-depth analysis of tree-based architectures shows that it is important to adapt a node's position in the tree according to its bandwidth capacity. The same analysis is conducted for mesh-based architectures and it is shown that the position on the distribution path has a significant influence on performance. Another important problem concerns the fairness aspect in terms of collaborators and so-called "free-riders". A P2P system works best if all peers contribute with their resources. This can be ensured by tit-for-tat mechanisms where peers return as much as they get. In this thesis a new kind of tit-for-tat mechanism is developed to combine bandwidth contribution with robustness - the more bandwidth a peer provides the more robust its position on the path becomes.

The efforts on improving the quality of video programs have never ceased since the beginning, and nowadays offering high-definition (HD) channels has become a common practice. However, compared with standard-definition (SD) channels, HD channels have to sustain a higher streaming rate to peers, which is a challenging task. In real systems, HD channels often suffer from poor streaming quality, or impose a heavy burden on the servers. This thesis conducts an in-depth study on peer cache and upload bandwidth management at the same time for multi-channel PA-VoD systems, where HD and SD channels coexist with different bandwidth and cache requirements. The objective is to minimize the server bandwidth consumption, and thus the maintenance cost of VoD service providers. The solution is cross-channel allocation (or view-upload decoupling), i.e., making SD channels help HD viewers with the surplus peer-contributed resources. The management of these resources includes bandwidth allocation and caching strategies. We first propose a generic modeling framework to capture the essential characteristics of PA-VoD systems: the demand and supply of bandwidth from peers. Our modeling framework can be customized or extended to model a variety of caching strategies, including FIFO, passive caching, and active caching with different user behaviors. We then apply the modeling framework to two representative scenarios: stationary scenarios, where the channels have fixed popularity; and non-stationary scenarios, in which a new movie is released, and peers enter the channel in a flash-crowd manner. We prove using our models that passive caching is efficient for stationary user behaviors, and derive the optimal caching solutions when the channels in the system demonstrate different popularity evolutions, i.e., with non-stationary behaviors. With the insights gained from our modeling work, we design effective centralized heuristic algorithms and practical distributed strategies for peer cache replacement and upload bandwidth allocation, with a near-optimal utilization of these resources. We propose centralized and distributed cross-channel allocation, and also extend the substreaming technique from live streaming to VoD systems, where it demonstrates its extreme feasibility. Our extensive simulation results verify the efficacy of these heuristic and practical strategies.

Commercial experiments are underway to determine the feasibility of multimedia broadcasting using packet based data networks alongside traditional over-the-air broadcasting. Broadcasting companies are offering low cost or free versions of video content online to both guage and at the same time generate popularity. In addition to television broadcasting, video streaming is used in a number of application areas including video conferencing, telecommuting and long distance education. Large scale video streaming has not become as widespread or widely deployed as could be expected. The reason for this is the high bandwidth requirement (and thus high cost) associated with video data. Provision of a constant stream of video data on a medium to large scale typically consumes a significant amount of bandwidth. An effect of this is that encoding bit rates are lowered and consequently video quality is degraded resulting in even slower uptake rates for video streaming services. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate peer-to-peer streaming as a potential solution to this bandwidth problem. The proposed peer-to-peer based solution relies on end user co-operation for video data distribution. This approach is highly effective in reducing the outgoing bandwidth requirement for the video streaming server. End users redistribute received video chunks amongst their respective peers and in so doing increase the potential capacity of the entire network for supporting more clients. A secondary effect of such a system is that encoding capabilities (including higher encoding bit rates or encoding of additional sub-channels) can be enhanced. Peer-to-peer distribution enables any regular user to stream video to large streaming networks with many viewers. This research includes a detailed overview of the fields of video streaming and peer-to-peer networking. Techniques for optimal video preparation and data distribution were investigated. A variety of academic and commercial peer-to-peer based multimedia broadcasting systems were analysed as a means to further define and place the proposed implementation in context with respect to other peercasting implementations. A proof-of-concept of the proposed implementation was developed, mathematically analyzed and simulated in a typical deployment scenario. Analysis was carried out to predict simulation performance and as a form of design evaluation and verification. The analysis highlighted some critical areas which resulted in adaptations to the initial design as well as conditions under which performance can be guaranteed. A simulation of the proof-of-concept system was used to determine the extent of bandwidth savings for the video server. The aim of the simulations was to show that it is possible to encode and deliver video data in real time over a peer-to-peer network. The proposed system achieved expectations and showed significant bandwidth savings for a sustantially large video streaming audience. The implementation was able to encode video in real time and continually stream video packets on time to connected peers while continually supporting network growth by connecting additional peers (or stream viewers). The system performed well and showed good performance under typical real world restrictions on available bandwith capacity.

There have been several deployments of largescale industrial level P2P live video systems, e.g., CoolStream, PPLive, Sopcast. Several contemporary measurement studies have verified that thousands of users can simultaneously participate in these systems. Almost all live P2P video systems offer multiple channels (e.g., PPLive can host over 100 channels). It is expected that in near future, live streaming systems with hundreds of user-generated channels will likely have thousands of live channels in total. With such a large number of streaming channels and huge number of participants, there are still some challenging issues needed to be addressed for an efficient P2P live streaming system. This PhD thesis is organized around three such problems related to the P2P live streaming systems. In the first research problem, our focus is on the Dedicated Channels used by a Small numbered Viewers (can be termed as DCSV channels for short) in a multi-channel live streaming system. Usually, these are user generated channels and they suffer adversely from poor channel performance, mainly, due to having a small number of participants. As a result, when a viewer of such a channel explicitly requests for a block of streaming content (commonly referred as a chunk), the probability that the chunk will be available among the existing viewers is less than it would be if the number of viewers was higher in that channel (e.g., viewers in a popular channel). We have proposed HnH (short for Hand-in-Hand), a novel scheme of cross-channel resource sharing, in order to solve the performance problem of DCSV channels due to their small number of viewers. We next develop a discrete-time stochastic model in order to analyze its efficiency. In the second research problem, we focus on the Free riders who only want to download and watch the streaming content from their neighboring peers but are unwilling to upload any content to their neighbors. The presence of free riders impose obstacle to the stability of any live streaming system because of consuming bandwidth from the system without significant contribution. We have investigated the performance of a Live streaming system with and without the presence of a free riders. First, we develop a discrete-time stochastic model and then compare the probability of continuous playback without any free rider and with certain amount of free riders. Next, we introduce a simple incentive mechanism and modify our stochastic model in order to accommodate the incentive mechanism. Then we compare the result of probability of continuous playback with and without having an incentive mechanism. Our work shows that presence of an incentive mechanism improves the overall system performance. In the third research problem, we focus on less motivated peers who are not interested to upload streaming contents to their neighbors if those contents are not from the channels they are watching. The context of this work is related to our first research problem where we have proposed the HnH scheme and for simplicity have considered that all the peers from all participating DCSV channels are motivated to cooperate. However, in practice, some of them may behave selfish and become less motivated to help peers from other channels. In this work, we investigate the performance of a HnH scheme based Live streaming system with and without the presence of less motivated peers. First, we develop a discrete-time stochastic model and then compare the probability of continuous playback without any selfish peer and with certain amount of selfish peers. Next, we introduce a simple incentive mechanism and modify our stochastic model accordingly. Finally, we compare the result of probability of continuous playback with and without incentive mechanism. Our work shows that presence of an incentive mechanism improves the over all system performance due to the fact that less motivated peers are motivated to cooperate more by the improved performance.
