Book excerpt: A new instrument for all sky, spectrophotometric imaging of aurora and airglow was installed in the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory's Airborne Ionospheric Observatory. Initial observations of equatorial and near-equatorial 6300 angstroms OI airglow show the existence of north-south aligned regions of airglow depletion. These dark bands often extend more than 1200 km in the north-south direction and 50 to 200 km in the east-west direction. Simultaneous airborne ionospheric soundings indicate that these regions of airglow depletion are characterized by an increase in the virtual height of the F-layer. A simple model of field aligned electron density depletion in the bottomside of the F-layer explains both the airglow observations and the ionospheric soundings. Initial auroras zone measurements show the structure and dynamics of the subvisual auroras in the noon sector that result from dayside precipitation. UHF satellite-to-aircraft propagation through the f-region auroras result in amplitude scintillations, both in the noon and midnight local time sectors. (Author).

Book excerpt: Maps of the monthly median of refractive effects are used by precision navigation and radar systems to correct for measurement errors caused by the ionosphere. Calculated off line using available climatologies of the pertinent ionospheric parameters, they are used in real time systems to remove 70 to 75 percent of the monthly rms error. When greater precision is required, these maps may be adapted by any of several local measurements of current ionospheric conditions. The residual refractive error is dependent on the density of these local measurements in space and time and on their ability to characterize the current ionosphere. Systematic variations of the ionosphere are usefully predicted over a few hours. Local features that have large geophysical scale size, such as the nighttime trough and the plasmapause enhancement of the mid-latitude ionosphere, are tracked by sequential measurements and may be mapped in space and local time across the entire system field of view during quiet geophysical periods. During disturbed periods, however, their dynamic behavior may require more frequent specifications and, in addition, very large features can develop which are sharply confined to small areas of the coverage region.

Book excerpt: The gas and dust between the stars emit across the electromagnetic spectrum and are found in a range of physical conditions from diffuse plasmas to cold, dense molecules. Through their study we see how quantum processes shape the structure of our Galaxy and fluid mechanics sets the stellar mass scale. The Interstellar Medium is a very broad subject with layers of complexity, a long history and a steady flow of new results. This comprehensive yet accessible textbook provides a self-contained one-semester course for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students. It is written in a style that students can follow by themselves and allows instructors to use class time to go deeper into the details or show applications to current research. It makes extensive use of publicly accessible data to illustrate specific points and to encourage students to learn by performing their own analyses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ionosphere is a layer of the Earth's atmosphere that extends from about 50 km to 1000 km above the Earth's surface. It is ionized by solar radiation, which creates ions and free electrons in the upper atmosphere. These ions and electrons reflect radio waves back to the Earth's surface, allowing long-distance radio communication as well as absorption of harmful solar radiation. Ionospheric conductivity monitoring assesses the state of the ionosphere and improves the accuracy of satellite communications. This book is organized into two sections on the influence and impact of transient or orbiting humanmade objects into the ionosphere and the monitoring and modeling of the temporal evolution of the ionosphere. The information presented will lead to a better understanding and forecasting of the ionosphere’s dynamic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Extreme' events - including climatic events, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, drought - can cause massive disruption to society, including large death tolls and property damage in the billions of dollars. Events in recent years have shown the importance of being prepared and that countries need to work together to help alleviate the resulting pain and suffering. This volume presents an integrated review of the broad research field of large-scale disasters. It establishes a common framework for predicting, controlling and managing both manmade and natural disasters. There is a particular focus on events caused by weather and climate change. Other topics include air pollution, tsunamis, disaster modeling, the use of remote sensing and the logistics of disaster management. It will appeal to scientists, engineers, first responders and health-care professionals, in addition to graduate students and researchers who have an interest in the prediction, prevention or mitigation of large-scale disasters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid deterioration of the environment in many countries around the world, or of segments and aspects of the environment in specific locations, made it necessary that immediate - even if only short term - solutions be found to as many of these problems as possible. Nevertheless, in the long run, long range and long term solutions must be found taking into account the effects of one country or region on another as well as of the inter-action between the different types of pollution over extended periods of time. It was the purpose of the Tel Aviv meeting on Pollution: Engineering and Scientific Solutions, to address presently known or foreseeable "environmental insults;" that is, to focus on those aspects of air, noise, land, water or any other environmental quality for which there already exist engineering, scientific, legal or other solutions. Consequently, people from all disci plines which are relevant to environmental problems and their solutions were invited to participate.

Book excerpt: By statistics based on ionogram data of three European stations amplitudes and quasi-periods of the fluctuations and their directions are determined. Different periods of the day, seasons and in-or de-creasing changes are treated separately. The oscillations found tend to produce higher electron density during downwards movement. (Author).

Book excerpt: The mapping of ionospheric parameters for the purpose of extending and extrapolating observations is studied. It is found that a relatively simple contouring program can be used to specify the ionosphere in the lower regions that are under strict solar control. Using electron density data representative of various ionospheric stations in North America, it is seen that the shape of the generated contours for the F region depend upon the location of the various stations. These results seem to imply the need for more sophisticated methods of synoptic representation of the upper level ionosphere. (Author).
