Book excerpt: Peninsular Malaysia is undergoing a tremendous economic and land development which results in the tropical rain forest environment being changed drastically. Since the extinction rate of many wildlife species in Malaysia is high, emphasis should be given to save and conserve these species in order to reduce their tragic extinction. At present, although laws appear satisfactory to curb losses from poaching and trade in wildlife, the effects of habitat loss habe proved to be more disastrous than any other known cause of mortality in the past. The approach to the problem has changed from an emphasis on law enforcement to a combination of natural resource planning which includes plans of other development agencies, research and management, extension programs, and the establishment of national park and wildlife reserves. The research and management techniques of wild life include habitat manipulation and improvement, stocking and captive breeding.

Book excerpt: This book is a fully revised and updated second edition of the only comprehensive guide to the mammals of South-east Asia, one of the world's richest regions in terms of mammal diversity, where species new to science are still being described regularly, though there is increasing pressure on all of its wild mammal populations. From large mammals such as the elephant, big cats, dolphins and whales through bears, monkeys and badgers to bats, civets, rats and shrews, more than 550 species are described in detail, including key identification characteristics, habitat, behaviour, distribution and status, accompanied by line drawings of footprints and details of anatomy, or other aspects of identification. Beautiful colour plates depict nearly all species and their variations, while accompanying range maps provide up-to-date information on distribution. This field guide is essential for any naturalist or traveller visiting this special corner of Asia.

Book excerpt: Excluding bats, there are 121 species of mammals in Peninsular Malaysia. Most occur in primary lowland forest (75%), hill forest (48%) and swamp forest (31%) compared with mangrove forest (20%), cultivated areas (14%) and human habitats (6%). Of these 121 species, 38 are considered endangered or threatened of which 34 species live in lowled forest, 12 in hill forest (of the latter only 4 species are confined to hill and montane forest) and 2 species in mangrove forest. As lowland forest has suffered the greatest loss agriculture, industrial development and ubanisation, species that depend on it for survival are at greatest risk. With increasing development in highland areas, hill and montane species are also at risk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prirnates that provide the central theme of these studies by David Chivers and his colleagues are the dominant large herbi vores of the tropical evergreen rain forest. Tothis extent, they are the ecological counterparts of the great herds of ungulates in habiting the savannahs of tropical Africa (and the monsoonal plains of Asia in their pristine state). Both groups comprise the chief primary consumers of living vegetable tissue in their respective environments. Members of each show appropriate anatomical adapt ations for such a diet. As efficient exploiters of a dispersed but generally abundant food source, each group collectively forms the main vertebrate component of animal biernass in the environment. Yet, despite superficial convergence, there are important differences in the biology and behaviour of members of these two groups of herbivores. Of greatest practical moment to the enquiring biologist are the ready visibility of most plains-dwelling ungulates, the ease with which the researcher can travel over (or above) their habitat by motor transport (or light aircraft) and the facility for near approach without causing disturbance that a closed vehicle has proved to offer. Given the additional attractions of wide, open views and stupendaus scenery, generally invigorating climate and easy life-style, it is perhaps not surprising that in past decades much research effort has focussed on the larger herbivorous mammals of the tropical savannahs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past and present distribution and abundance of large mammals in Malaysia is reviewed. Hunting, habitat loss and timber extraction - factors commonly believed to have contributed to the present patterns of distribution and abundance - are discussed, with the orang-utan in Sabah as the main examples. It is concluded that human activities only partly account for the present restricted distributions and numbers of some of the species. It is suggested that the ammounts and availability in the experiment of certain chemical elements, especially sodium, strongly influence large mammal populations. Implications for conservation are discussed. [Author's abstract].

Book excerpt: Of the vast area of structurally similar vegetation that forms the Far Eastern tropical rain forest block, only the forests of peninsular Malaysia lie on the mainland of Asia. Although showing some influence from this source, the flora and fauna are distinctive and exceedingly rich in species. Among other factors, this richness reflects the complex structure of the vegetation, justly famous for the extensive stands of tall trees that create the conditions to which many smaller plants, fungi and a huge variety of animals are adapted. After a century of scientific investigation, it is now possible to understand peninsular Malaysia's complex ecosystem as an essential prerequisite to the successful management for conservation and long-term productivity in the area. Compiled by authors with personal experience of the region, this book constitutes the most authoritative account of this diverse and fragile region. It is essential reading for all those interested in Malaysia and its conservation.
