Book excerpt: Discovering unexplored high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei can open up a new direction to study band structure and the associated shell structure in isospin-asymmetric many-body systems. However, experimental reach has so far been limited to neutron-deficient or stable nuclei which are preferentially produced in fusion reactions used in such studies. By using neutron-rich rare-isotope beams, this limitation can be effectively removed, exposing previously inaccessible nuclei to this proven approach. This dissertation reports an experiment designed to kick off a spectroscopy program to study nuclear structure by means of low-energy nuclear reactions with reaccelerated rare-isotope beams available from the ReA3 facility at National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. A 40Ar stable beam and a 45K rare-isotope beam impinged on a self-supporting lithium target to produce products ranging from argon to titanium via both direct and compound nucleus reactions. These mechanisms provide complementary tools to study the single-particle and collective natures of the states being probed. Using particle and gamma-ray coincidence relations between a silicon charged-particle detector and the Segmented Germanium Array, reaction channels were distinguished, and new properties were revealed, including for the nuclei 46Ca and 47K. For 46Ca, three new higher-lying states around 6 MeV and five new gamma-ray transitions were identified, suggesting three independent band structures formed from different particle-hole configurations. The rotational-like band built on the 0+2 state is established up to the tentatively assigned 6+2 state. New results are compared to large-scale shell model calculations, confirming the validity of the effective interaction describing particle-hole excitations across the Z=20 and N=28 shell gaps in the vicinity of doubly-magic 48Ca. Shape coexistence observed in lighter-mass calcium isotopes is suggested to persist in 46Ca, albeit as part of a transition from neutron to proton cross-shell excitations. For 47K, differential cross sections were extracted for the two-neutron transfer channel related to the present intruder configuration. Comparisons to Coupled Reaction Channels calculations indicate strong single-particle character for the states and a direct one-step process for the reaction itself. This work successfully developed the experimental techniques to use reaccelerated beams for spectroscopy of hitherto unexplored nuclei and demonstrated the ability of this approach to expand the experimental reach of nuclear structure studies.

The conference was organized by the Department of Physics and the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla with support from the Physics Departments of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. This conference, Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses has now gained the status of a major nuclear physics serial conference. The previous conference was held in Bellaire, Michigan, USA. The conference was first held in 1967 in Lysekil, Sweden, then entitled Conference on Nuclei Far from Stability. ENAM2001 welcomed 270 participants from 34 countries, including 17 accompanying per sons. The content of the program was selected based on the advice of the International Advisory Committee. The Committee members read and considered 253 submitted abstracts in selecting oral contributions. During the conference week 76 invited and oral talks were given. The rest of the contributions were presented in dedicated poster sessions. Many thanks go to the speakers of oral and poster presentations for their enthusiasm and for the high quality of their work which demonstrated the liveliness of the field. Participation in the lectures was high and contributions from the audience were important towards the success of this conference. The organizers would like to especially thank Cary Davids of Argonne National Laboratory for his comprehensive summary talk, which is also included in these Proceedings.

Book excerpt: This work details an application of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy for the separation of short-lived isomeric states and their subsequent study with decay spectroscopy. It reports the successful construction of a novel decay spectroscopy apparatus that can operate at pressures below 1 x 10^-9 mbar. The method is demonstrated by separating the nuclear ground and isomeric states of 204Fr and performing alpha-decay spectroscopy. An equivalent mass spectrometer would require 4.6 million times as much resolution to achieve the same result. This work unambiguously confirms the existence of a second isomeric state in 204Fr. The author also demonstrates the effectiveness of this method for laser spectroscopy and identification of hyperfine-structure components with energy tagging. This method was successfully used in 202Fr to identify ground and isomeric states. The measurement of 202Fr reported in this thesis demonstrates a factor of 100 improvement in sensitivity compared to state-of-the-art fluorescence techniques. The work reported in this thesis won the author the IOP Nuclear Physics Group Early Career Prize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of a beta-ray spectrometer, in the analysis of nuclear decay schemes, makes possible the solution of many of the problems which arise in the course of such analyses. Of particular interest is the application of the instrument to the determination of the energy of beta and gamma-radiation from radioactive isotopes. In addition, it is possible to use the instrument to estimate the relative intensities of the various components of radiation; and to apply the coincidence method, in conjunction with the spectrometer, to the determination of the order in which these components are emitted from the nucleus. The present work was concerned with three particular problems arising in beta-ray spectrometry. A method of improving the intensity-resolution relationship of a thin lens magnetic beta-ray spectrometer, by means of ring focusing, was investigated. The existence of a ring-shaped constriction in the electron beam was demonstrated experimentally by a photographic film method. A theoretical analysis was carried out in an attempt to determine relations from which the relative intensities of beta-rays, gamma-rays and internal conversion electrons might be determined from data obtained with the spectrometer. Simplifying assumptions were made concerning the focusing action of the instrument, and effects due to scattering of electrons in the source of photoelectric radiator were neglected. Formulae were derived from which the observed spectrometer counting rates due to sources of known activity, emitting beta-rays, gamma-rays or internal conversion electrons may be predicted.

Book excerpt: The neutron excess of the triton makes its possible to use this projectile in transfer reactions to reach nuclei of greater neutron excess than the target nucleus. Principal examples of such reactions are the (t, .cap alpha.), (t, p) and (t, 3He) reactions, all of which have been used to study neutron rich nuclei. The present report discusses several of these examples and reports on more definitive mass measurements and spectrosopy of the low lying levels of some of these nuclei. In particular, results of using a polarized triton beam are discussed as this study leads to many new spin assignments.

Book excerpt: New high-spin levels have been identified in the nucleus 12°Pd from analysis of the coincidence gamma rays observed in the 238U([alpha], f[gamma][gamma][gamma]) reaction. Recoiling fragments were detected with the Rochester heavy-ion detector array, CHICO, in coincidence with gamma-rays using Gammasphere. An A=110-130 mass-gated [gamma] - [gamma] - [gamma] cube from this experiment was constructed and analyzed for coincident gamma-rays in several nuclei near A=120. New results for neutron-rich 118Pd and 12°Pd have been obtained. The 12°Pd level scheme was extended to spin of 10 by building on the new low-energy gamma rays identified in decay studies of 12°Rh. The details of the 118Pd level scheme derived from this work are compared to previous work. The systematics of the yrast levels in even-even Pd and Cd isotopes are presented and the symmetry of energy levels around N = 68 is discussed. A new 10 level in 124Cd has been observed. The population intensity of even-even neutron-rich Cd isotopes is deduced, indicating that nuclides near 12°Cd are preferentially populated following alpha-induced fission of 238U.

Book excerpt: The interest in studying the neutron-deficient Hg isotopes stems from the fact that they are located in a region of the nuclear landscape where shape changes occur and where very large deformations were predicted. More specifically, the investigation of odd-A nuclei enables one to identify the orbitals located in the vicinity of the Fermi surface which play a crucial role in determining global properties such as nuclear shapes. Prior to this experiment, the 183Hg nucleus studied by this collaboration was the lightest odd-A Hg isotope known. From a recent experiment performed at the FMA in conjunction with 10 Compton-suppressed Ge detectors from the Argonne Notre Dame gamma-ray facility, it was possible to identify transitions in 181Hg following the 144Sm(4°Ar,3n) reaction at a beam energy of 175 MeV. A level scheme was constructed and the transitions were regrouped into three rotational bands. One of these is proposed to be built on the [521]1/2− groundstate and the two others are interpreted as signature partner bands built on the [624]9/2 configuration. The statistics in this experiments were not sufficient to obtain multipolarity information and an additional measurement was proposed.
