Book excerpt: An analytical procedure is presented for determining the transient response of simply supported, rectangular laminated composite plates subjected to impact loads from airgun-propelled or dropped-weight impactors. A first-order shear-deformation theory is included in the analysis to represent properly any local short-wave-length transient bending response. The impact force is modeled as a locally distributed load with a cosine-cosine distribution. A double Fourier series expansion and the Timoshenko small-increment method are used to determine the contact force, out-of-plane deflections, and in-plane strains and stresses at any plate location due to an impact force at any plate location. The results of experimental and analytical studies are compared for quasi-isotropic laminates. The results indicate that using the appropriate local force distribution for the locally loaded area and including transverse-shear-deformation effects in the laminated plate response analysis are important. The applicability of the present analytical procedure based on small deformation theory is investigated by comparing analytical and experimental results for combinations of quasi-isotropic laminate thicknesses and impact energy levels. The results of this study indicate that large-deformation effects influence the response of both 24- and 32-ply laminated plates, and that a geometrically nonlinear analysis is required for predicting the response accurately. Book excerpt: Composite materials are increasingly used in aerospace, underwater, and automotive structures. To take advantage of the full potential of composite materials, structural analysts and designers must have accurate mathematical models and design methods at their disposal. The objective of this monograph is to present the laminated plate theories and their finite element models to study the deformation, strength and failure of composite structures. Emphasis is placed on engineering aspects, such as the analytical descriptions, effective analysis tools, modeling of physical features, and evaluation of approaches used to formulate and predict the response of composite structures. The first chapter presents an overview of the text. Chapter 2 is devoted to the introduction of the definitions and terminology used in composite materials and structures. Anisotropic constitutive relations and Iaminate plate theories are also reviewed. Finite element models of laminated composite plates are presented in Chapter 3. Numerical evaluation of element coefficient matrices, post-computation of strains and stresses, and sample examples of laminated plates in bending and vibration are discussed. Chapter 4 introduces damage and failure criteria in composite laminates. Finally, Chapter 5 is dedicated to case studies involving various aspects and types of composite structures. Joints, cutouts, woven composites, environmental effects, postbuckling response and failure of composite laminates are discussed by considering specific examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis will study the effects of material properties, thickness ratio, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, and ply layup on the reactions of a transversely loaded rectangular composite plate. Geometric nonlinearities, i.e. the Von Karman nonlinear plate equations, and through the thickness shear effects were included. Both geometrically linear and nonlinear solutions were done. This research was done using an existing finite element code with a four-noded, 28 DOF rectangular element. All plates were 48 plies thick to be representative of a real world application. Material properties had the largest effect when the plate was thick. The linear solution approaches the classical laminated plate theory solution as the plate gets thin. The nonlinear solution deflects much less than the stiffen the plate. For a clamped plate the linear and nonlinear solutions are comparable until the plate is quite thin. Aspect ratio has a large effect on the plate for an isotropic material. However, in the ply layups investigated, aspect ratio had much less effect because half the fibers were oriented in the direction of the short dimension of the plate. Ply layup did not have a great effect on the deflections of the plate. This occurred because all the layups chosen had at least half the plies oriented in the same direction. (jhd).

Book excerpt: This book presents the most recent advances on the mechanics of soft and composite shells and their nonlinear vibrations and stability, including advanced problems of modeling human vessels (aorta) with fluid-structure interaction. It guides the reader into nonlinear modelling of shell structures in applications where advanced composite and complex biological materials must be described with great accuracy. To achieve this goal, the book presents nonlinear shell theories, nonlinear vibrations, buckling, composite and functionally graded materials, hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity, nonlinear damping, rubber and soft biological materials. Advanced nonlinear shell theories, not available in any other book, are fully derived in a simple notation and are ready to be implemented in numerical codes. The work features a blend of the most advanced theory and experimental results, and is a valuable resource for researchers, professionals and graduate students, especially those interested in mechanics, aeronautics, civil structures, materials, bioengineering and solid matter at different scales.

Book excerpt: Updated and improved, Stress Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials, Hyer's work remains the definitive introduction to the use of mechanics to understand stresses in composites caused by deformations, loading, and temperature changes. In contrast to a materials science approach, Hyer emphasizes the micromechanics of stress and deformation for composite material analysis. The book provides invaluable analytic tools for students and engineers seeking to understand composite properties and failure limits. A key feature is a series of analytic problems continuing throughout the text, starting from relatively simple problems, which are built up step-by-step with accompanying calculations. The problem series uses the same material properties, so the impact of the elastic and thermal expansion properties for a single-layer of FR material on the stress, strains, elastic properties, thermal expansion and failure stress of cross-ply and angle-ply symmetric and unsymmetric laminates can be evaluated. The book shows how thermally induced stresses and strains due to curing, add to or subtract from those due to applied loads.Another important element, and one unique to this book, is an emphasis on the difference between specifying the applied loads, i.e., force and moment results, often the case in practice, versus specifying strains and curvatures and determining the subsequent stresses and force and moment results. This represents a fundamental distinction in solid mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the structural components are generally subjected to dynamic loadings in their working life. Very often these components may have to perform in severe dynamic environment where in the maximum damage results from the resonant vibrations. Susceptibility to fracture of materials due to vibration is determined from stress and frequency. Maximum amplitude of the vibration must be in the limited for the safety of the structure. Hence vibration analysis has become very important in designing a structure to know in advance its response and to take necessary steps to control the structural vibrations and its amplitudes. The non-linear or large amplitude vibration of plates has received considerable attention in recent years because of the great importance and interest attached to the structures of low flexural rigidity. These easily deformable structures vibrate at large amplitudes. The solution obtained based on the lineage models provide no more than a first approximation to the actual solutions. The increasing demand for more realistic models to predict the responses of elastic bodies combined with the availability of super computational facilities have enabled researchers to abandon the linear theories in favor of non-linear methods of solutions. In the present investigation, large amplitude free vibration analyses of composite Mindlin's plates have been carried out using a C0 eight noded Langragian element by finite element method. The formulation is based on "First order shear deformation theory". The large deformation effect on plate structures has been taken care by the dynamic version of von Karman's field equation. The effects of variations in the Poisson's ratio, amplitude ratio, thickness parameter & plate aspect ratio on the non-linear frequency ratio has also been included in the research. Chapter 1 includes the general introduction and the scope of present investigation. The review of literature confining to the scope of the study has been presented in.
