Dynamic Relaxation (DR) method is presented for the geometrically linear and nonlinear laterally loaded, rectangular laminated plates. The analysis uses the Mindlin plate theory which accounts for transverse shear deformation. A computer program has been compiled. The convergence and accuracy of the DR solutions for elastic small and large deflection response are established by comparison with various exact and approximate solutions. New numerical results are generated for uniformly loaded square laminated plates which serve to quantify the effects of shear deformation, material anisotropy, fiber orientation, and coupling between bending and stretching. It was found that linear analysis seriously over-predicts deflections of plates. The shear deflection depends greatly on a number of factors such as length/ thickness ratio, degree of anisotropy and number of layers. It was also found that coupling between bending and stretching can increase or decrease the bending stiffness of a laminate depending on whether it is positive or negative.

A review of literature indicates (1,2,3) that these geometries are the ones most commonly dealt with in the past. The present approach, however, could be extended to the analysis of plates of some other geometries as well. The nonlinearities investigated here arise due to large deformation or large amplitude vibration and are included in the nonlinear strain-displacement relations. The stress-strain relationship is linear, however, and the material constants of the plate are with reference to an orthogonal system of axes. New type of functions called Self-Generating Functions are used to obtain the linear and nonlinear frequencies in dynamic problems and load-deflection behavior in static problems. Self-Generating Functions of zero-order are polynomials of eight degree for any given boundary conditions of the plate.

Hence, the method of continuing the solution with respect to a parameter is a natural and, to a certain degree, universal tool for analysis. This book includes details of practical problems and the results of applying this method to a certain class of nonlinear problems in the field of deformable solid mechanics. In the Introduction, two forms of the method are presented, namely continu ous continuation, based on the integration of a Cauchy problem with respect to a parameter using explicit schemes, and discrete continuation, implementing step wise processes with respect to a parameter with the iterative improvement of the solution at each step. Difficulties which arise in continuing the solution in the neighbourhood of singular points are discussed and the problem of choosing the continuation parameter is formulated.

The main body of work in this area is concerned with the control of time-dependent displacements and stresses, and assumes linear elastic conditions, namely linear elastic material behavior and small defor- tion. See, e. g. , [1]–[3], the collections of papers [4, 5], and references therein. On the other hand, in the present paper we consider the static optimal control of a structure made of a nonlinear elastic material and und- going large deformation. An important application is the suppression of static or quasi-static elastic deformation in flexible space structures such as parts of satellites by the use of control loads [6]. Solar rad- tion and radiation from other sources induce a temperature field in the structure, which in turn generates an elastic displacement field. The displacements must usually satisfy certain limitations dictated by the allowed working conditions of various orientation-sensitive instruments and antennas in the space vehicle. For example, a parabolic reflector may cease to be effective when undergoing large deflection. The elastic deformation can be reduced by use of control loads, which may be imp- mented via mechanically-based actuators or more modern piezoelectric devices. When the structure under consideration is made of a rubb- like material and is undergoing large deformation, nonlinear material and geometric effects must be taken into account in the analysis.
