Results were obtained for a torisphere under internal pressure and also for centrally loaded spheres. A study was made of the effect of elastic-plastic behavior on the buckling of spheres with axisymmetric imperfections subjected to external pressure. It was found that plastic yielding played a significant role in reducing the buckling pressure of these shells. The influence of plastic yielding increased with increase of the thickness to radius ratio. (Author).

With the development in this work an improved numerical suppression scheme is now available for the large deflection elastic-plastic analysis of axisymmetric shells of revolution subjected to symmetric loadings. Quazilinearization of Sander's non-linear shell equations is presented for the first time. With these quazilinearized equations the suppression scheme has been developed to solve non-linear boundary-value problems. This suppression scheme has been used in conjunction with a Newton-Raphson method to improve a stable convergence process at the yield surface in elastic-plastic problems. Results presented indicate the accuracy of this numerical scheme. It appears to be possible to extend this method for more complicated situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finite element method is described for the large displacement elastic-plastic analysis of plates and shells. The method combines the piecewise linear geometric stiffness matrices with the piecewise linear generalized stress strain relations for an elastic-plastic shell. The method is discussed with special reference to a triangular plate element with membrane stretching and flexure. A quadratic displacement function was used for the in-plane displacements, and a piecewise modified complete cubic displacement function was used for the out-of-plane displacements. This last resulted in a nonconforming element which exhibited good convergence features. The method was implemented on a general purpose computer program. Case studies were made of simply supported square plates under uniform pressure. Studies were also made of axisymmetric shells using an axisymmetric shell element. Reselts for both types of structures were found to agree with available theoretical and experimental results in the literature. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

Book excerpt: The report presents the formulation and check out problems for a computer code DYNAPLAS, which analyzes the large deflection elastic-plastic dynamic response of stiffened shells of revolution. The formulation for special discretization is by the finite element method with finite differences being used for the evaluation of the pseudo forces due to material and geometric nonlinearities. Time integration is by the Houbolt method. The stiffeners may be due to concentrated or distributed eccentric rings and spring supports at arbitrary angles around the circumference of the elements. Check out problems include the comparison of solutions from DYNAPLAS with experimental and other computer solutions for rings, conical and cylindrical shells and a curved panel. Book excerpt: A method of analyzing nonlinear static and dynamic responses of deformable solids has been developed based on an incremental variational formulation using the Lagrangian mode of description. The material nonlinearity due to plasticity or viscoplasticity as well as the geometric nonlinearity due to large displacements are considered. The equations of motion are obtained in a linearized incremental form using the principle of virtual work and solved using step-by-step numerical integration procedures. Equilibrium check is made at the end of each step and the residual forces are added to the next increment for improved accuracy over the pure incremental method. For elastic-plastic solutions the flow theory of plasticity is used along with the von Mises yield condition for isotropically hardening materials. The viscoplastic constitutive theory is also in the form of an associated flow law and capable of considering strain rate sensitive behavior. The viscoplastic strains are taken into account using an initial strain formulation. The discretization of the structure is achieved by the use of degenerate isoparametric finite elements and the computer codes that have been developed are capable of analyzing large axisymmetric deformations of shells of revolution. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and concern in a wide range of industries. This book presents a compilation and synthesis of a wealth of research, experience and knowledge of the subject. Information that was previously widely scattered throughout the literature is assembled in a concise and convenient form that is easy to understand, and state-of-the-art research findings are thoroughly examined. This book is useful for those involved in the structural design of silos, tanks, pipelines, biodigestors, chimneys, towers, offshore platforms, aircraft and spacecraft. Buckling of Thin Metal Shells is essential reading for designers, researchers and code writers involved with thin-walled metal shell structures.
