Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate solution is given for large deflections of a clamped-edge rectangular plate under the combined action of edge thrust (or thermal strain) and lateral load. To determine center deflection and stresses, a one-term approximation to the lateral deflection mode is used in a modified energy method. The effects of nonrigid supports are examined for the case of zero lateral pressure, and it is found that while elongation of the supports is accountable by simple modification of edge thrust terms, support bending requires more substantial revision of the analysis. The concept of thermal load is introduced and calculation methods are provided for uniform and non-uniform temperature distribution in the plane of the plate. To establish the region of applicability of the analysis, critical loads are computed for more complex panel buckling modes. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear large-deflection equations of von Kármán for plates are converted into a set of linear equations by expanding the displacements into a power series in terms of an arbitrary parameter. The post-buckling behavior of simply supported rectangular plates subjected to longitudinal compression and subject to a uniform temperature rise is investigated in detail by solving the first few of the equations. Experimental data are presented for the compression problem. Comparisons are made for total shortening and local strains and deflections which indicate good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.

This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure for the prediction of the post-buckling behavior of clamped rectangular plates when subjected to arbitrary planar temperature distributions is developed. The Von Karman large deflection plate equations, modified to account for thermal effects, are solved by a technique which reduced the fourth order non-linear partial differential equations to a set of cubic algebraic equations. The differential equation solution utilizes a fourier type series representation of the stress function, out of plane deflection and temperature distribution The modified Von Karman compatibility equation is solved by direct substitution, and the equilibrium equation is solved thropugh the use of Galerkin type procedure. The combination of these two reduced equations results in an infinite set of simultaneous cubic algebraic equations. The equations allow general planar temperature distributions, mechanical in-plane loading, uniform pressure loading, and both symmetric and antisymmetric deformations.

Armen and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of plates after buckling is very different from that associated with a simple strut. Thin plates may carry loads many times greater than their initial buckling loads, whereas the critical buckling load for a strut represents its ultimate load-carrying capacity. In this report an energy technique is used to establish the stress distributions and loads associated with the application of uniform end-shortenings to thin rectangular plates. The plates can have an initial imperfection that is assumed to vary in a prescribed manner. Initial imperfections are very common for thin skin-stiffened structural configurations that are typical of most aircraft construction. A description of the theory, its assumptions, and the resulting computer program are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solution of von Karman's fundamental equations for large deflections of plates is presented for the case of asimply supported rectangular plate under combined edge compression and lateral loading. Numerical solutions are given for square plates and for rectangular plates with a width-span ratio of 3:1. The effective widths according to von Karman, Bengston, Marguerre, and Cox and with experimental results by Ramberg, McPherson, and Levy. The deflections for a square plate under lateral pressure are compared with experimental and theoretical results by Kaiser. It is found that the effective widths agree closely with Marguerre's formula and with the experimentally observed values and that the deflections agree with the experimental results and with Kaiser's work.

Book excerpt: Von Karman's equations for thin plates with large deflections are solved for the special cases of rectangular plates having ratios of length to width of 1.5 and 2 and loaded by uniform normal pressure. The boundary conditions are such as to approximate panels with riveted edges under normal pressure greater than that of the surrounding panels. Center deflections, membrane stresses, and extreme-fiber bending stresses are given as functions of the pressure for center deflections up to twice the thickness of the plate. For small deflections the results are consistent with those given by Timoshenko.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the classical plate theory most commonly used for the analysis of thin metallic plate structures. The basic assumptions of the plate theory are not straightaway taken for granted, but are deduced as logical inferences from a three-dimensional elasticity solution for a thin rectangular slab. In addition, the elasticity results are used to verify the accuracy of the plate theory. Statics, dynamics as well as stability of plates are dealt with. Besides a lucid explanation of the theory, exact and approximate solution methodologies are discussed. The approach adopted throughout--with emphasis on close correspondence with the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, and on the implications of each assumption of the plate theory--enables the reader to easily progress on to the study of state-of-the-art topics such as geometric and material nonlinearities, refined plate theories accounting for warping and stretching of the normal and laminated construction and material orthotropy typical of fibre-reinforced composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relaxation and successive approximation methods are used to solve Von Karman's equations as applied to initially flat, rectangular plates with large deflections under either normal pressure or combined normal pressure and side thrust, and several specific cases are analyzed. The general method developed may be applied to bending and combined bending and buckling problems with practically any boundary conditions to any required degree of accuracy or applied to solve the membrane theory of the plate which applies when the deflection is very large in comparison with the thickness of the plate.
