Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 5.0, Nile Valley University, course: BSc, language: English, abstract: The objective of this book is to present a complete and up to date treatment of rectangular laminated plates with uniform cross sections. Dynamic Relaxation (DR) method is presented for the geometrically linear and nonlinear laterally loaded, rectangular laminated plates. The analysis uses the Mindlin plate theory which accounts for transverse shear deformation. A computer program has been compiled. The convergence and accuracy of the DR solutions for elastic small and large deflection response are established by comparison with various exact and approximate solutions. New numerical results are generated for uniformly loaded square laminated plates which serve to quantify the effects of shear deformation, material anisotropy, fiber orientation, and coupling between bending and stretching. It was found that linear analysis seriously over-predicts deflections of plates. The shear deflection depends greatly on a number of factors such as length/ thickness ratio, degree of anisotropy and number of layers. It was also found that coupling between bending and stretching can increase or decrease the bending stiffness of a laminate depending on whether it is positive or negative.

Book excerpt: Finite-element analysis of the large-deflection theory (in von Karman's sense), including transverse shear, governing moderately thick, laminated anisotropic composite plates is presented. Linear and quadratic rectangular elements with five degrees of freedom (three displacements, and two shear rotations) per node are employed to analyze rectangular plates subjected to various loadings and edge conditions. Numerical results for bending deflections, stresses, and natural frequencies are presented showing the parametric effects of plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio, orientation of layers, and anisotropy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The differential quadrature hierarchical finite element method (DQHFEM) was proposed by Bo Liu. This method incorporated the advantages and the latest research achievements of the hierarchical finite element method (HFEM), the differential quadrature method (DQM) and the isogeometric analysis (IGA). The DQHFEM also overcame many limitations or difficulties of the three methods. This unique compendium systemically introduces the construction of various DQHFEM elements of commonly used geometric shapes like triangle, tetrahedrons, pyramids, etc. Abundant examples are also included such as statics and dynamics, isotropic materials and composites, linear and nonlinear problems, plates as well as shells and solid structures. This useful reference text focuses largely on numerical algorithms, but also introduces some latest advances on high order mesh generation, which often has been regarded as the major bottle neck for the wide application of high order FEM.

Book excerpt: A finite-element analysis is presented for large-deflection bending and large-amplitude free vibration of rectangular plates of cross-ply and angle-ply construction under various edge conditions and loadings. The finite element employed in the present study accounts for transverse shear and rotatory inertia (in the Reissner-Mindlin sense), and large rotations (in the von Karman sense). The finite element solutions are found to agree very closely with results available in the literature. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finite-element structural model has been developed for the dynamic analysis of laminated, thick plates. The model uses constant thickness quadrilateral elements to represent the shape of the plate and these elements are stacked in the thickness direction to represent the desired material layers. The analysis allows for orthotropic material properties of each layer as well as for elastic-plastic material response. Nonlinear strain displacement relations are used in the formulation to represent large, transverse plate deflections. The finite-element model is used to prepare a computer program for the numerical calculations. Two versions of the program have been prepared, which correspond to two different time integration numerical methods. These methods include finite-difference and predictor-corrector techniques. The computer programs are designed for time and space dependent pressure loads to be applied to one surface of the plate. However, the programs could be used for other loading conditions by changing one subroutine.

Book excerpt: Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variational formulation and finite-element implementation of the well-known discrete laminate theory of laminated composite plates is presented. To allow for varying properties of different layers with respect to the fixed reference frame used in the analysis, a linear variation of 'in-plane' displacements over each layer is assumed. The rate of variation can be different for each layer. The coupling between 'in-plane' and 'transverse' deformation is allowed for as is deformation due to shear. The mathematical model essentially assumes the laminated plate to be a stacking of Mindlin's orthotropic plates allowing for interfacial continuity of displacement. A finite element scheme implementing the foregoing concepts is described. Through the thickness, nodal points are used to reduce the problem to one of two-dimensional geometry. Three different interpolation schemes viz., the eight-point serendipity, the nine- point Lagrangian and the four-point Lagrangian are used in the isoparametric elements and their effectiveness is compared. The numerical procedure is verified against available solutions and then applied to analysis of stresses in a multi-ply free-edge delamination specimen. The procedure does not satisfy the traction-free edge condition and, therefore, the approach cannot be used to predict delamination and its growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.
