La section consacrée aux monuments funéraires implique la mise en œuvre de méthodes différentes ; les tombeaux semblent en effet, dans l'esprit des théoriciens comme des bâtisseurs romains, hors du champ de l'architecture proprement dite. Malgré la multiplicité presque infinie des choix formels et décoratifs dont ils relèvent, ils n'en expriment pas moins, plus fidèlement que bien d'autres constructions, les prétentions, les espérances, la richesse ou la misère de ceux qui les ont fait élever ; leurs alignements le long des routes ont animé pendant des siècles le paysage suburbain et proposé une sorte d'image anticipée de la ville dont ils annonçaient la proximité.
