Book excerpt: CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: Only for a limited time! Why should I buy this Laos travel guide instead of any other? The most important reasons: It is cheaper than other travel guides I tried all activities and visited all the sights myself and describe in great detail how you can get there or do it yourself and therefore you can save money It is light as you can bring it along on your phone or e-reader It will inspire you and inform you about secret spots that you don't want to miss It is the best DIY travel guide for Laos. This guidebook isn't for you if you don't like texts that are written in a travel blog style. In addition, all the images are black and white in order to keep the costs low and to be able to offer the travel guide at this low price. If that bothers you, you should look for a different travel guide. What ,,I love Laos" offers you: Somehow my suitcase or backpack always gets too full. Therefore, I always jot down some notes before I start my travels, but I hardly ever carry a guidebook with me, except maybe as an e-reader. The second thing I don't like about the other guidebooks is that even though they mention all the good places or transport options, they don't explain how to do it. For example, what is the easiest option to get to the spectacular Kuang Si Waterfall? Or how to take the Slow Boat between Laos and Thailand without an organized tour? Where can you get the best food in Luang Prabang and where is the best view overlooking the Mekong? ,,I love Laos" will answer you those questions and many more. In ,,I love Laos" you find all my personal experiences of my travels to Laos. This country offers unexpected treasures even for the frequent traveler. Breathtaking views over the Mekong and the karst mountains, beautiful pagodas, busy markets and unexpected sights which will leave you looking at them open-mouthed. Not to mention the cheap and delicious food. I planned all my trips carefully with ideas out of all the good guidebooks I could find, so you don't have to spend this money anymore. Plus, I used TripAdvisor and many helpful blogs. So, if you want to have a more personal experience than the usual tourist and have some actual explanations how to have the best possible experience in a place, this guidebook is definitely right for you.More info about other countries you find on my blog: www.swissmissontour.comAs BONUS if you buy ,,I love Laos" you will receive a free packing list and the highlights of my ,,I love Thailand" travel guide.I love Laos e-book categories: - Laos travel guide- travel guide Laos- Laos travel guide 2019- Laos tour book - Laos holiday- Laos traveling- Luang Prabang city guide- Vang Vieng- Vientiane- budget travel guide- Slow Boat- visa LaosIf you buy the print book you will receive the e-book version for free. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of nine journeys in the "And There I Was" series. In 1991, through a chance meeting in Bangkok with an old CIA station chief and his retired French army counterpart, expeditions were arranged into Cambodia and Laos, both still reeling fifteen years on from the devastating effects of war and genocide. The author's route took him through Thailand's northern hill country, on to Cambodia and Laos and finally Nepal and India. Experience intensely profound moments in Laos and Cambodia, sit along the Mother Ganges in the holy city of Varanasi beneath billowing clouds of smoke from crematoriums and contemplate the path of life. Bear witness to Cambodia's horrific memorials to the genocide and take in the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Sit in a cave on the Mekong and explain to a Pathet Lao soldier why your country indiscriminately killed so many of his people. Die a slow death in an island bungalow on the Gulf of Thailand, feel the heart-wrenching anguish of a young girl's cremation and finally, the emotions evoked when setting one's eyes for the first time upon the Taj Mahal. DH Koester has been a farmhand, aerospace engineer, atomic physicist, vagabond, materials engineer, professional photographer, artist, furniture maker, writer and hobo. He holds degrees in both Physics and Mathematics and though a citizen of the United States, he spent seven years in the Canadian North.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A renowned authority on the secret world of opium recounts his descent into ruinous obsession with one of the world’s oldest and most seductive drugs, in this harrowing memoir of addiction and recovery. A natural-born collector with a nose for exotic adventure, San Diego–born Steven Martin followed his bliss to Southeast Asia, where he found work as a freelance journalist. While researching an article about the vanishing culture of opium smoking, he was inspired to begin collecting rare nineteenth-century opium-smoking equipment. Over time, he amassed a valuable assortment of exquisite pipes, antique lamps, and other opium-related accessories—and began putting it all to use by smoking an extremely potent form of the drug called chandu. But what started out as recreational use grew into a thirty-pipe-a-day habit that consumed Martin’s every waking hour, left him incapable of work, and exacted a frightful physical and financial toll. In passages that will send a chill up the spine of anyone who has ever lived in the shadow of substance abuse, Martin chronicles his efforts to control and then conquer his addiction—from quitting cold turkey to taking “the cure” at a Buddhist monastery in the Thai countryside. At once a powerful personal story and a fascinating historical survey, Opium Fiend brims with anecdotes and lore surrounding the drug that some have called the methamphetamine of the nineteenth-century. It recalls the heyday of opium smoking in the United States and Europe and takes us inside the befogged opium dens of China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. The drug’s beguiling effects are described in vivid detail—as are the excruciating pains of withdrawal—and there are intoxicating tales of pipes shared with an eclectic collection of opium aficionados, from Dutch dilettantes to hard-core addicts to world-weary foreign correspondents. A compelling tale of one man’s transformation from respected scholar to hapless drug slave, Opium Fiend puts us under opium’s spell alongside its protagonist, allowing contemporary readers to experience anew the insidious allure of a diabolical vice that the world has all but forgotten.

Book excerpt: One of society’s main problems today is a lack of self-love; this is evident in the way most people live their lives – sadly, I was also part of the statistic. The fact that I was not living life to the full bothered me in many ways. I was not running my own race; I constantly compared myself to others; I had not accepted myself for who I was, and I had not taken full responsibility for my life. I was merely alive and confused. Although everything on the outside looked good, I felt miserable. I learned the hard way that what goes on inside us is more important than what people can see. A lack of self-love impacted most areas of my life negatively - I knew something needed to change. Once I had surrendered my life to God, He helped me see my own value. I started May to May – My Journey to Self-love with God to move my life in the right direction. After discovering the 20 components that lead to self-love, my life has never been the same. I could finally accept myself just as I was. I am proud to say there is no other race I would rather run than my own. I needed to love myself first, so I could truly live.

Book excerpt: This study treats ecotourism in National Protected Areas of Lao PDR as a “recreational frontier” which instrumentalizes the recreation of human natures in capitalism’s centers for that of nonhuman natures at capitalism’s (closing) frontiers. This world-ecological practice of ecorational instrumentality – i.e. of nature domination in the name of “Nature” – presents a remedy for capitalism’s crisis that is itself crisis-ridden, enacting a central tension of ecocapitalism: that between “conservation” and “development”. This epistemic-institutional tension is traced through the preconditions, modes and effects of ecotourism in Laos by gradually zooming from the most general scale of societal nature relations into the most detailed intricacies of ecotouristic practice. The combination of Bourdieu, Marx and Critical Theory enables a systematic analysis of the recreational frontier as enactment of various contradictions deriving from the “false-and-real” Nature/Society dualism.
