In Australia, a society of immigrants, a continuing tension has existed since the nineteenth century between a desire for monolingualism, often a result of xenophobic policies of enforced assimilation, and an acceptance of multilingualism reflecting increased tolerance. At the present time, without even considering the 150 Aboriginal languages still spoken, Australia has an unparalleled mix of languages other than English in common usage. These are often described by the term "community languages". Drawing on census data and other statistics, this book addresses the current situation of community languages in Australia, analysing which are spoken, by whom and where. Community languages: The Australian experience focusses on three main issues:. how languages other than English are maintained in a predominantly English speaking environment;. how the structure of the languages themselves has changed over the years;. how the government has responded to such ethnolinguistic diversity, with particular emphasis on Australia's unique National Language Policy. Understanding the issue involves far more than compiling simple usage statistics or documenting the grammar of a tongue—it requires examining the social practices and philosophies that affect indigenous language survival. In presenting the case of Kaska, an endangered language in an Athabascan community in the Yukon, Barbra A. Meek asserts that language revitalization requires more than just linguistic rehabilitation; it demands a social transformation. The process must mend rips and tears in the social fabric of the language community that result from an enduring colonial history focused on termination. These “disjunctures” include government policies conflicting with community goals, widely varying teaching methods and generational viewpoints, and even clashing ideologies within the language community. This book provides a detailed investigation of language revitalization based on more than two years of active participation in local language renewal efforts. Each chapter focuses on a different dimension, such as spelling and expertise, conversation and social status, family practices, and bureaucratic involvement in local language choices. Book excerpt: Social Functions of Language in a Mexican-American Community is an inquiry into how language functions in the life of a bilingual minority group in process of cultural change, this study investigated the acculturation and assimilation of individuals of Mexican descent living in Tucson, Arizona. Specifically, the language usage and interpersonal relations of individuals from representative families in the bilingual community of Tucson, the usage of bilingual social groups in the community, and the linguistic and cultural contacts between bilinguals and members of the larger Tucson community were examined. Data were drawn from observational studies of individuals and families; observation of group activities; and observation of, supplemented by questionnaires on, the cultural interests of Mexican children and their families. Some conclusions of the study were that Spanish came to be identified in the Mexican community as the language of intimate and family relations, while English came to be identified as the language of formal social relations and of all relations with Anglos. It was also found that the younger American-born group reject both Spanish and English in favor of their own language, Pachuco. Tables depicting the characteristics of 20 families, the language usage of families, and the language usage in personal relationships of English and Spanish are included. Suggestions for further research are made.
