Book Synopsis Language in the Public Space by : Holger Schmitt
Download or read book Language in the Public Space written by Holger Schmitt and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As soon as we leave our private sphere, we are surrounded by a multitude of written messages in various shapes and forms: billboards, shop names, regulatory signs ('STOP'), memorial plaques, messages on clothing, graffiti and many others. In short, we enter a 'Linguistic Landscape' (LL). Language in the public space, however, often follows very different patterns from most other written texts. It tends to be, for example, syntactically simple, pragmatically right to the point, highly creative, visually oriented and multilingual. LL studies are still a fairly young discipline, with an unsettled research agenda and many questions still open. This introduction approaches language in the public space from a wide variety of linguistic perspectives. It covers some of the well-established topics like multilingualism and aspects of semiotics, but goes far beyond them. Features studied include names, writing systems, grammar, dialect and potential applications for language teaching. Each of the main chapters concludes with a series of questions for reflection or independent research as well as a number of suggestions for further reading. Two hundred b/w photographs provide rich illustration. - Holger Schmitt is a linguist (MA, PhD, Habilitation) who taught English Linguistics at various German universities (Koblenz-Landau, Bonn, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal, Konstanz). His areas of specialisation are sociolinguistics, phonetics and phonology, and educational linguistics.

Book Synopsis Exploring Second-Language Varieties of English and Learner Englishes by : Joybrato Mukherjee
Download or read book Exploring Second-Language Varieties of English and Learner Englishes written by Joybrato Mukherjee and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are intended to bridge what Sridhar and Sridhar (1986) have called the 'paradigm gap' between traditional SLA research on the one hand and research into institutionalised second-language varieties in former colonial territories on the other. Since both learner Englishes and second-language varieties are typically non-native forms of English that emerge in language contact situations, it is high time that they are described and compared on an empirical basis in order to draw conceptual and theoretical conclusions with regard to their form, function and acquisition. The present collection of articles places special emphasis on empirical evidence obtained from large-scale analyses of computerised corpora of learner Englishes (such as the International Corpus of Learner English) and of second-language varieties of English (such as the International Corpus of English). It addresses questions such as ‘Are the phenomena we find in ESL and EFL varieties features or errors?’ or ‘How common and wide-spread are features across contact varieties of English?’

Book Synopsis Francophone Belgian Cinema by : Jamie Steele
Download or read book Francophone Belgian Cinema written by Jamie Steele and published by Traditions in World Cinema. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francophone Belgian Cinema offers an original critical analysis of filmmaking in an oft-neglected 'national' and regional cinema. The book draws key distinctions between the local, national, small national, regional and transnational frameworks in both representational and industrial terms. Alongside the Dardenne brothers, this book considers four promising Francophone Belgian filmmakers who have received limited critical attention in academic publications on contemporary European cinema: Joachim Lafosse, Olivier Masset-Depasse, Lucas Belvaux and Bouli Lanners. Exploring these filmmakers' themes of post-industrialism, paternalism, the fractured nuclear family and spatial dynamics, as well as their work in the more commercial road movie and polar genres, Jamie Steele analyses their stylistic continuities and filiation. This is complemented by an analysis of how the industrial aspects of film production, distribution and exhibition contribute to the creation of both a regional and transnational cinema.
