Durand (1796-1886) will be the first ever in Spain and Europe devoted to this 19th-century painter and founder of the American landscape painting school, that would soon become known as the Hudson River School. Through an important selection of 140 works-oils, drawings, and prints (Durand being a pioneer in the latter)-spanning his entire artistic career, the exhibition will reveal his genius as a landscape painter as well as the other themes he treated during his long career: portraits, genre scenes, and bucolic American landscapes. The exhibition will also include a small selection of paintings by Durand's fellow artists and followers. The majority of the works are being loaned by the New York Historical Society, which holds the most important collection of Durand's works. The project is being overseen by Dr. Linda S. Ferber, N-YHS curator and renowned expert on Durand, with the collaboration of noted scholars on Durand and 19th-century American art: Dr. Barbara Novak, Dr. Barbara Dayer Gallati, Dr. Rebecca Bedell, Dr. Roberta Olson, Dr. Marilyn Kushner, and Dr. Kimberly Orcutt.

Book excerpt: A richly illustrated volume presenting outstanding Old Master paintings from the 17th and 18th Centuries from the Saunders Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This elegant volume presents 44 outstanding Old Master paintings, primarily from the 17th and 18th centuries, that Jordan and Thomas Saunders III collected over the past 25 years. Included in the Saunders Collection are works by renowned Dutch, Flemish, French, Italian, and English masters, among them Frans Hals, Jan Davidsz de Heem, Jan Brueghel, Peter Paul Rubens, Nicolas de Largillière, Canaletto, Francesco Guardi, and Thomas Lawrence. This richly illustrated catalogue was written by a team of specialists under the guidance of Arthur K. Wheelock Jr, former curator at the National Gallery of Art. The introductory essay discusses the principles that guided the Saunders in forming their collection, and the individual entries examine how artists fused careful observation with the imagination to create beautiful and thought-provoking paintings. These texts also examine the social, economic, and political realities that had an impact on these artistic creations.

Book excerpt: Accompanying a major retrospective of Anders Zorn’s work, this is the first volume in English to explore the Swedish Impressionist’s entire career in depth. Anders Zorn (1860–1920) is one of Sweden’s most accomplished and beloved artists. Renowned for his light, expressive watercolors, he attained mastery of the genre at an early age and later applied his techniques to oil painting. Zorn is often compared with the artists John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, contemporaries who also were known for their portraits of high-society figures. Taking up residence in London and then in Paris, Zorn established himself as an international portrait painter, depicting fashionable clients in a style both elegant and relaxed. He became a favorite among wealthy American collectors, bankers, and industrialists who sat for him, including art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner and three U.S. presidents. Although perhaps best known for his portraits, Zorn brought equal skill to painting genre scenes and views of nature. This handsome volume provides a thorough introduction to the artist and his works, from portraiture to landscapes and his famous nudes. Four illustrated essays are accompanied by a chronology, selected bibliography, an exhibition checklist, and an index.

It includes works by the most famous English artists, such as Thomas Gainsborough, Joseph Mallord William Turner, John Constable, Edward Burne- Jones, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This subject is introduced with a very unique text, published in 1882: a French study of English pictorial art. The author, Ernest Chesneau, was highly-cultured, an art historian and inspector of Fine Arts. He explains the beginnings of this school which excels in portraiture and landscapes, and reminds us of the English brilliance regarding watercolours, not forgetting to include the work of the Pre-Raphaelites.
