If youOCOre imagining a lush valley with bright vineyards rolling into the distance, historic wineries nestled in the trees, and quaint towns with eclectic boutiques and world-class restaurants, Napa Valley wonOCOt let you down.aIf youOCOve envisioned staying in a rustic B&B where you can see the sunrise over the vineyards, youOCOll find one. If you long for the yeasty, boozy smell of an historic winery, youOCOll find that. If you want to taste the subtle combination of flavors in a gourmet dinner from the kitchen of a renowned chef, thatOCOs here, too. Want to stomp grapes? Check. Travel the valley in a hot air balloon? No problem. Soak away your worries in a mud bath? Yup, got that too. In fact, the Napa Valley might just be the ultimate adult playground. ThereOCOs another reason the valley has become so popular: wine tasting is easy. The valley is just 25 miles long from Napa in the south to Calistoga in the north. Highway 29 runs up the west side of the valley, with the Silverado Trail running parallel to the east, and dozens of small roads connecting the two. The bulk of the 400-plus wineries in the region are neatly gathered along these routes and in the surrounding hills, so you can easily visit any number in a day. There are several small towns along the valley floor, any of which would make an excellent base for your visit. This is a guide to all of the best wineries, how to get around, the best restaurants, where to stay, entertainment, nightlife - all you need to know."

Book Synopsis The Making of the Cretan Landscape by : Oliver Rackham
Download or read book The Making of the Cretan Landscape written by Oliver Rackham and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to help the visitor understand Crete's remarkable landscape, which is just as spectacular as the island's rich archaeological heritage. Crete is a wonderful and dramatic island, a miniature continent with precipitous mountains, a hundred gorges, unique plants, extinct animals and lost civilisations, as well as the characteristic agricultural landscape of olive groves, vines and goats, Jennifer Moody and Oliver Rackham explain how the island's peculiar and extraordinary features, moulded and modified by centuries of human activity, have come together to create the landscape we see today. They also explain the formation and ecology of Crete's beautiful mountains and coastline, and the contemporary threats to the island's fragile natural beauty.

Book Synopsis Landscape Disturbance and Biodiversity in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems by : Philip W. Rundel
Download or read book Landscape Disturbance and Biodiversity in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems written by Philip W. Rundel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human impact on natural landscapes through urbanization and agricultural expansion are becoming more and more dramatic and are the cause of serious environmental problems. This volume examines the effect of landscape disturbance on plant and animal diversity in the five mediterranean-climate regions of the world. It begins with three introductory chapters broadly reviewing the issues of landscape degradation. Further contributions describe regional land use conflicts in each of the five regions. Landscape disturbance and plant diversity, and landscape disturbance and animal diversity are treated in separate chapters. Four contributions deal with demography and ecophysiology in vegetation succession following disturbance. The volume closes with a consideration of the future addressing aspects of environmental politics.
Book Synopsis Threatened Landscapes by : Bryn Green
Download or read book Threatened Landscapes written by Bryn Green and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few, if any, environments are free of human intervention. Often this generates ecosystems which are rich in biodiversity, historical interest, recreational opportunity and scenic beauty just as worthy of conservation as the more natural ecosystems on which protection programmes have been almost exclusively focussed. These 'cultural landscapes', ranging from the farm and forest lands of Europe and Eastern North America, through to the pasture lands and savannas of the Middle East and Africa to the paddylands of the Pacific Rim, are usually the product of relatively low-level, sustainable exploitation of the environment over long periods of time. Many have survived for centuries, if not millennia, but now urban expansion, depopulation of rural areas and, most damagingly, the intensification of agricultural and sylvicultural practices, are everywhere leading to a loss of their cherished biodiversity and amenity. Whilst past changes have mostly added to the valued characteristics of these landscapes, modern farming and forestry are creating sterile monocultures on the better land whilst marginal lands are being abandoned. This book documents these changes, illustrates them through detailed case studies of a representative selection of threatened landscapes, analyses their underlying causes and explores ways by which they can continue to be maintained, or new landscapes created which maintain their desired characteristics.
Book Synopsis Mediterranean Island Landscapes by : Ioannis N. Vogiatzakis
Download or read book Mediterranean Island Landscapes written by Ioannis N. Vogiatzakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean islands exhibit many similarities in their biotic ecological, physical and environmental characteristics. There are also many differences in terms of their human colonization and current anthropogenic pressures. This book addresses in three sections these characteristics and examines the major environmental changes that the islands experienced during the Quaternary period. The first section provides details on natural and cultural factors which have shaped island landscapes. It describes the environmental and cultural changes of the Holocene and their effects on biota, as well as on the current human pressures that are now threats to the sustainability of the island communities. The second section focuses on the landscapes of the largest islands namely Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, Crete, Malta and the Balearics. Each island chapter includes a special topic reflecting a particular characteristic of the island. Part three presents strategies for action towards sustainability in Mediterranean islands and concludes with a comparison between the largest islands. Despite several published books on Mediterranean ecosystems/landscapes there is no existing book dealing with Mediterranean islands in a collective manner. Students, researchers and university lecturers in environmental science, geography, biology and ecology will find this work invaluable as a cross-disciplinary text while planners and politicians will welcome the succinct summaries as background material to planning decisions.
