Leading mathematicians began referring to their field in terms drawn from the exploration accounts of Columbus and Magellan. Many of those who promoted the vision of mathematics as heroic exploration also played central roles in developing the most important mathematical innovation of the period?the infinitesimal methods, which the author shows was no coincidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes, the vistas and majesty of the Lewis & Clark Trail have been brought to life in a magnificent set of 248 color photographs. Richard spent two years visiting key locations along the Lewis & Clark Trail ¿ by plane, auto, and on foot ¿ shooting specific locations at the same time of year as was originally experienced some 200 years ago. The result is an extraordinary set of images capturing the incredible diversity of the American landscape. The Lewis & Clark Expedition ¿ also known as the Corps of Discovery ¿ is regarded as one of the epic stories in American history. The trail stretches across the American landscape starting in St. Louis and followed the Missouri River through the woodlands of the Midwest, onto the Great Plains across Montana, entered the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho, and glided down the Clearwater, Snake, and Columbia rivers to the Pacific Ocean. The pioneering exploits of the Corps of Discovery have been thoroughly chronicled in thousands of pages of narrative by historians as well as in the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. These words, detailing the sense of discovery and the wonder of viewing untouched landscapes, essentially were the only ¿pictures¿ from this expedition. Until now.

Book excerpt: This thesis is an exploration in sharpening a perception of a stretch of land. It is an attempt to enhance the natural form of land in an effort to reveal connections between the people of a region and the environment around them, thereby establishing a balance, a continuity which has been severed in the modem world. The topic of continuity is a central concern of the thesis. The project itself is a place of respite which is a place about life rather than a retreat from it. It is administered by an alliance of conservation groups known as "The Coalition for Buzzards Bay", with the place serving as their base for outreach to the community. The focus is on a small region in Southeastern Massachusetts and the project is for the people of that region. The thesis is organized in three parts, the first a description of the region, the particular site, and the program which will serve the memory of the reader when moving on through the work. The second is a construction of ideas which I find related to the issue of continuity, illustrated with work outside the thesis and pieces of this work itself. The third part is a journey through the site and project illustrating the application of the ideas which are brought up in the previous section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seen from the air, the seemingly endless "flyover" spaces that form America's Midwest appear in rectangular variations of brown, green, and ochre, with what Michael Martone terms "the tended look of a train set." In these essays, the flatness of the region becomes the author's canvas for a richly textured, multidimensional exploration of its culture and history. In the tradition of the Greek myths that inspire him, Martone begins at the beginning -- his beginning -- as a child who "grew up" in his mother's high school English classroom. As the essays unfold, provocative accounts of his experiences lead us on a path toward discovery of the stories that build our own sense of place and color our understanding of the world. From depicting the details of mechanized cow-milking to relating the similarities between the Greek city of Sparta and Indianapolis, Martone subtly connects different cultures, times, and stories. "Stories We Tell Ourselves" characterizes the fluid, energetic writing that transforms a mundane small town into an intertwined, vibrant world shaped by the perceptions and memories of the people who live there. What begins in one classroom at Central High effortlessly builds into a discussion, by turns playful, serious, and poignant, that touches on myriad subjects. Before our realization, Martone unites The Odyssey, Iowa farmers, a human genome map, American Gothic, and Dan Quayle into a saga equal to any from Classical mythology, showing us that a house, a farm, a town, a country, or a civilization has energy and dimension only through the stories of its inhabitants. The Flatness and Other Landscapes proves that our lives and the landscapes that surround us are only asflat as we perceive them to be.
