Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Garden Series, Planting the Home Grounds The results produced by planting are so strikingly obvious that the layman is but indifferently impressed with the other factors of a successful landscape plan, and as a consequence, landscape develop ment, whatever the type, finds favor or disfavor in the popular eye solely from the point of view of planting. This fact is a source of some discouragement to the intelligent designer, who realizes that good design is the real basis of his work, and cherishes that above all else. Without a good design as a basis for landscape development, plant material ceases to function as a delightful medium in which to render the plan, but serves instead as a means for covering up or blotting out unsightly mistakes. According to natural sequence, the design is the most important factor in a landscape development, for unless an intelligent design is first prepared for the whole development, much time, labor and expense will be wasted. Planting is next in importance, for it is the material medium that gives life to the design. But so far as popular approval is concerned, the landscape architect realizes that practically his only source of satisfaction in working out a good design is his own artistic conscience, and that the public loudly praises a successful planting. Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Garden Series, History and Design "I never had any other desire so strong and so like to covetousness, as that one which I have had always, that I might be master at last of a small house and a large garden." - Abraham Cowley, 1618-1667. Gardening is one of the most inexpensive and entertaining pastimes the year round. The gardening year is divided into four regular seasons: winter, or planning time; spring, or planting time; summer, or enjoyment time; autumn, or the season for the harvest of vegetables and fruits. A study of the average home grounds in America seems to show that few people have grasped the principles of garden design or have given to this phase of home making the attention that it deserves. The object of the Landscape Garden Series is to serve as a guide to garden care and planning. It is not the object of the authors to cover each subject, of this series, in an exhaustive manner, but rather to include in these books such information as will be found helpful in planning and caring for private places. It has been the endeavor of the writers of this series to avoid sentimental effusions upon incidental details of gardening. Such articles and books upon the subject of gardening have done untold good in arousing interest in this fascinating pastime, but it has seemed to the authors of this series that their inspirational literature is not supplemented frequently enough by clear exposition of the fundamental theories of good planning, and by practical information as to how these ideas may be carried out. The material in these booklets has been arranged so that each phase of landscape work can be studied conveniently and the separate books used as a part of the garden equipment. Book excerpt: Recreate the wild beauty and thriving ecology of meadows, prairies, woodlands, and streamsides in your own garden. In New Naturalism, horticulturist and modern plantsman Kelly D. Norris shares his inspiring, ecologically sound vision for home gardens created with stylish yet naturalistic plantings that mimic the wild spaces we covet—far from the contrived, formal, high-maintenance plantings of the past. Through a basic introduction to plant biology and ecology, you’ll learn how to design and grow a lush, thriving home garden by harnessing the power of plant layers and palettes defined by nature, not humans. The next generation of home landscapes don’t consist of plants in a row, pruned to perfection and reliant on pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides to survive. Instead, today’s stunning landscapes convey nature’s inherent beauty. These gardens are imbued with romance and emotion, yet they have so much more to offer than their gorgeous aesthetics. Naturalistic garden designs, such as those featured in this groundbreaking new book, contribute to positive environmental change by increasing biodiversity, providing a refuge for wildlife, and reconnecting humans to nature. In the pages of New Naturalism you’ll find: Planting recipes for building meadows, prairies, and other grassland-inspired open plantings even in compact, urban settings Nature-inspired ways to upgrade existing foundation plantings, shrub beds, and flower borders to a wilder aesthetic while still managing the space Inspiration for taking sidewalk and driveway plantings and turning them into visually soft, welcoming spaces for humans and wildlife alike Ideas for turning shady landscapes into canopied retreats that celebrate nature Creative ways to make an ecologically vibrant garden in even the smallest of spaces New Naturalism approaches the planting beds around our homes as ecological systems. If properly designed and planted, these areas can support positive environmental change, increase plant and animal diversity, and create a more resilient space that’s less reliant on artificial inputs. And they do it all while looking beautiful and improving property values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to grow healthy vegetables at home, but have hesitated because it seems too hard and time consuming, Organic Gardening for Everyone is your perfect hands-on guide—an “if I can do it, you can do it” case study that addresses your concerns and gets you started. Loaded with practical advice and step-by-step guidance, Organic Gardening for Everyone takes a very personal and friendly approach to a subject that can be intimidating. It is a first-class primer on organic vegetable gardening, and an inspirational story about how anyone can balance the rigors of gardening with the demands of a modern, family-oriented lifestyle. In 2012, a California mom decided to start an organic vegetable garden. But she went about it in an unusual way: she crowdsourced it by launching a YouTube channel under the name "CaliKim" and asking for help. And then she started planting. As questions came up, she turned to her viewers and subscribers and they replied with answers and advice. As she learned, her garden grew successfully—even in the hot, harsh California climate. Her expertise also grew, and now she answers many more questions than she asks and has become a very accomplished home gardener. And CaliKim has a great story to tell: growing healthy organic vegetables for your family is not difficult, even for today’s time-challenged lifestyles. She provides complete step-by-step information on growing the most popular edibles organically, and also gives sound advice on how to take on the challenges of balancing a hectic lifestyle with successful growing—and how to involve the whole family in the process. You'll be rewarded for your effort every time you place a plate of natural, organic vegetables on the family dinner table knowing exactly what they are, what is in them, and where they came from.
