Book excerpt: Measures of grassland bird demography on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields were compared and modeled at several spatial scales to identify habitat factors associated with increased conservation value for grassland birds. Grassland bird populations and species richness were compared between fields located in landscapes with different amounts of CRP habitat and total grassland. Multi-scale habitat models were developed from and validated on two independent data sets to identify the primary habitat features that could predict the potential value of CRP and other idle grasslands for grassland bird conservation. The frequency of occurrence, abundance, and nest density of Henslow's sparrows (Ammodramus henslowii) and abundance of bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) were higher in fields located in high grassland landscapes (55-75%) than low grassland landscapes (20-35%), whereas field sparrows (Spizella pusilla) were less likely to be present in high grassland landscapes. However, field sparrow reproductive performance was similar between high CRP, high grassland landscapes and the seemingly preferred low CRP, low grassland landscapes. Dickcissel (Spiza americana) and sedge wren (Cistothorus platensis) occurrence, song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) abundance, and red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) nesting success were higher in landscapes with high levels of CRP enrollment (20-35%) than those with low levels (5-12%). Multi-scale habitat models were useful for predicting occurrence and abundance of grassland birds, but not for predicting nesting success. The amount of woody edge around fields was negatively related to presence and abundance of several grasslandnesting species, whereas field sparrows (Spizella pussilla) were positively associated with the amount of woody edge around fields. Grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) and eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) occurrence and abundance increased with shorter, less dense vegetation, whereas common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) presence and abundance and red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) abundance increased with taller, more dense vegetation. Grassland conservation and management efforts must recognize that habitat factors from several spatial scales may limit the conservation value of specific sites for grassland birds.

Some studies have found positive relationships among abundance, nest success, field size, and distance to edges, whereas others have found no relationship. One reason for differing results may be the landscape composition in which the study took place. I examined how landscape composition influenced relations among: 1) occurrence and abundance of grassland songbirds and field size and 2) nest success of ducks, field size, and edges. I also investigated the effects of mowing on grassland songbirds, and how landscape features, such as amount of perennial grassland, and predator community composition influenced the nest success of ducks in fields. The study took place in the Prairie Pothole Region of central North Dakota during the 1996-1997 breeding seasons. Two types of 6.4 x 6.4 km study areas were selected based on the amount of perennial grassland they contained: 15-20% and 51-55%. The remaining portion of the study areas was primarily cropland and wetland.

Book excerpt: Grassland birds have declined more than any other guild of birds in North America, largely due to loss and degradation of native grasslands. The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has restored some native warm-season grasses (NWSG), but grassland birds continued to decline ( -1.1% annually) partly due to the limited acreage converted (1% of southeastern US). Using NWSG in production settings provides profit incentive to landowners while reducing dependency on government programs. Studies examining these production practices and their effect on grassland birds east of the Great Plains are limited. During 2009 & 2010, I surveyed 102 NWSG fields in Kentucky and Tennessee being used for production purposes (control, biofuel, seed, hay, and pasture treatments) to assess bird use and vegetation characteristics. Landscape cover around each field (250, 500, and 1000 m) was digitized from aerial photography. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), I compared bird (relative abundance, species diversity, and species richness) and vegetation (average height, litter depth, vertical cover, litter cover, and vegetation cover) metrics across the five treatments. Relative abundance for all species, species diversity, and species richness were all greater for seed production fields (P

Book excerpt: The once vast grasslands of the Northern Tallgrass Prairie region have undergone substantial modification since European settlement. Concomitantly, grassland birds have experienced drastic population declines. Since 1996, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has actively promoted conservation buffers through its Continuous Enrollment Conservation Reserve Program (CCRP). A particularly popular buffer practice in the Midwest, filter strips are 6-36 m wide strips of herbaceous vegetation established along waterways to reduce soil erosion and improve water quality. Created in 1997, the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) provides opportunities to widen filter strips and diversify seeding mixtures. Understanding how filter strip design influences bird use of these habitats can provide conservation partners with information on how to better accommodate grassland bird species of concern into management objectives. During 2003 and 2004, 1 sampled 39 filter strips in southwestern Minnesota in order to assess the local- and landscape-level characteristics influencing bird use of USDA filter strips. I also investigated the local-level characteristics influencing arthropod occurrences in filter strips; emphasis was placed on taxa important to breeding bird diets. Arthropod richness, abundance, and drymass were negatively correlated with standing dead vegetation. Filter strip width, vegetation vertical density, and forb cover were not as important in my arthropod models as I had predicted. A nested analysis of local habitat variables showed that filter strip width, standing dead vegetation, forb cover, and vegetation vertical density were important in explaining variation in bird abundance and species richness, but adding arthropod drymass variables improved most models. Separate landscape models showed that bird occurrences were positively associated with herbaceous cover but negatively associated with developed areas and the density of herbaceous habitat edges in the 1 km radius surrounding filter strips. Logistic-exposure models showed that daily survival rates of songbird nests were negatively affected by filter strip width and standing dead vegetation. Adding arthropod information did not improve nest models. Predation was the major cause of nest failure for all nesting species. Though the primary purpose of filter strips will remain soil conservation, several opportunities exist for incorporating grassland bird conservation objectives into filter strip design.

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is the primary tool for conserving agroecosystems in the United States. There have been positive local effects of programs like CRP, but there is uncertainty about whether local effects scale up to populationlevel benes. We used a landscape-scale approach to understand the effects of a grassland conservation program, the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), on Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and other grassland bird populations. We demonstrated that Northern Bobwhite populations were positively influenced by the CREP. However, there can be opportunity costs for other species when landscapes are managed for Northern Bobwhite through these programs. Similarities between landscape-scale resource requirements likely dictate opportunity costs. We provide a decision support tool with which practitioners can establish an adaptive management strategy for private lands.

Book excerpt: Grassland birds have experienced population declines worldwide from habitat degradation caused by conversion to agriculture and recent intensification of land use, including increased use of fertilizer, fossil fuels, and irrigation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) includes initiatives targeting wildlife enhancement to mitigate ongoing declines in grassland bird populations. The newest CRP practice, State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE), was designed to restore vital habitats for high priority wildlife species throughout the United States. Our objective was to assess the potential benefits of SAFE for upland gamebirds and grassland songbirds in Kansas. We monitored lands enrolled in SAFE to estimate bird density based on field scale and landscape scale characteristics. Our study was conducted in three ecoregions: Smoky Hills (4 counties), Flint Hills (3 counties), and the High Plains (3 counties). We surveyed 121 SAFE fields and 49 CRP fields from 2012 - 2013. Northern Bobwhite density was negatively associated with percent litter within survey fields. Ring-necked Pheasant density differed among ecoregions, and was positively associated with percent bare ground in the High Plains, but negatively associated with field age in the Smoky Hills. Mourning Dove density differed among ecoregions, and was negatively associated with percent forb in the High Plains, and positively associated with percent grassland in the Smoky Hills. In the Flint Hills, Mourning Doves were negatively associated with CRP fields and large fields. Brown-headed Cowbirds were positively associated with percent forbs. Amount of CRP surrounding survey locations was positively associated with bird density through the entire range for Grasshopper Sparrows, Dickcissels, and Lark Buntings, and in the High Plains for Western Meadowlarks. Percent woodland had negative effects on Western Meadowlarks in the Smoky Hills, whereas percent cropland had negative effects on Eastern Meadowlarks statewide. CRP positively affected abundance of four of our species, whereas percent cropland and woodland negatively affected others. Thus, the amount of set-aside lands enrolled in SAFE could be important for grassland bird populations. SAFE and CRP supported equal numbers of Northern Bobwhites and Ring-necked Pheasants, suggesting SAFE provides benefits for target species of upland gamebirds.
