Book excerpt: This volume in the series on contemporary landscape architecture is concerned with how life quality can be increased by improving our living environment through planning and raising the quality of public space. How green do we want our housing to be? What are the essential criteria of a successful planning of open space in residential architecture? Will the changed relationship between city and country contribute to that, perhaps in the form of urban agriculture? This book was published on the occasion of the German Landscape Architecture Award 2011, the Special Housing Environment Award, and the largest competition for ideas from students and young professionals in landscape architecture and open space planning: the Peter Joseph Lenné Award. With a revised design and reworked structure, the essays and project descriptions in the book reveal the strategies with which the profession is meeting new challenges.

Book excerpt: The more intensively we exploit the urban and rural landscape, the greater the demands we place on our environment and what it can provide. Demographic change, shrinking cities, urban expansion, climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources are confronting us with challenges of ever greater magnitude. Solar fields and bio-energy crops are changing the face of the landscape and new traffic and energy infrastructure criss-crosses the countryside. Meanwhile, vast efforts are being made to adapt existing infrastructure to meet changing demands. In the process, it has once again become clear that we must consider our use of natural resources not just from a local perspective but within a broader context. Green infrastructure strategies can take quite different forms, ranging from floodwater protection measures to the integration of traffic and energy systems and the development of urban green. The goal for society is to improve the diversity and resilience of our environment and to minimize the effects of climate change. In essays, interviews and profiles of the best realized projects from the past few years, Green Infrastructure examines the challenges and tasks facing contemporary landscape architecture and what it can achieve to address them. This book is published on the occasion of the awarding of the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2015.

Book excerpt: Landscape architecture is a discipline which hovers between art and science, treading the fine line between invention and remembrance, ecology and abstraction, daring to be modern whilst mindful of tradition. This book attempts to grasp the state of affairs and develop new perspectives for landscape architecture. It takes as its starting point exemplary projects which have been realised over the last ten years mainly in Germany, but also in other countries like Switzerland and Saudi Arabia. In fundamental essays, discerning statements, in-depth projects documentations the issues which are at the heart of landscape architecture, open space design and landscape planning are explored. In times when European integration is increasing, agriculture is changing direction, sustainability is an issue and the demands on public space are growing, this publication provides a platform for the debate on landscape architecture. Lavishly illustrated and attractively designed, the book succeeds in communicating the visual fascination which lies in designing modern gardens, parks and landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is one of the most important landscape architects of the twentieth century, yet despite her lasting influence, few outside the field know her name. Her work has been instrumental in the development of the late-twentieth-century design ethic, and her early years working with architectural luminaries such as Louis Kahn and Dan Kiley prepared her to bring a truly modern—and audaciously abstract—sensibility to the landscape design tradition. In Cornelia Hahn Oberlander: Making the Modern Landscape, Susan Herrington draws upon archival research, site analyses, and numerous interviews with Oberlander and her collaborators to offer the first biography of this adventurous and influential landscape architect. Born in 1921, Oberlander fled Nazi Germany at the age of eighteen with her family, going on to become one of the few women to graduate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in the late 1940s. For six decades she has practiced socially responsible and ecologically sensitive planning for public landscapes, including the 1970s design of the Robson Square landscape and its adjoining Provincial Law Courts—one of Vancouver’s most famous spaces. Herrington places Oberlander within a larger social and aesthetic context, chronicling both her personal and professional trajectory and her work in New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Seattle, Berlin, Toronto, and Montreal. Oberlander is a progenitor of some of the most significant currents informing landscape architecture today, particularly in the area of ecological focus. In her thorough biography, Herrington draws much-deserved attention to one of the truly important figures in landscape architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape is the appearance a particular area has, as well as its perception by those who view it. It is often the product of cultural conditions and is an image in our consciousness. Landscape is familiar to us, it serves as a home and a reminder of the past; it is omnipresent. The most exciting aspect of landscape, be it urban, agrarian, forest, water, mountainous, or desert, is its great variety and tremendous dynamism. No two areas are alike. The landscape is constantly undergoing change. This book presents selected international projects by the successful practice Kamel Louafi Landscape Architects from Berlin. In an abundance of images, sketches, and essays the practices’ attitude toward landscape becomes apparent: the site, its context and history, and the overall theme itself define the interventions, as well as the four seasons and the course of time. Landscape Interventions is the articulation of imagination.
