Book Synopsis Landlords and Tenants by : Jerome G. Rose
Download or read book Landlords and Tenants written by Jerome G. Rose and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1973 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blatant tenant hostility towards landlords, widespread neglect and wholesale abandonment of properties, and a critical shortage of housing accommodations for low- and moderate-income tenants for all symptoms, in Professor Rose's view, of the current legal relationship between landlords and tenantsâan unworkable anachronism dangerously maladjusted to social, economic, and political realities. This book describes in detail the patterns by which myriad inequities have been woven into the law, and suggests some remedies. It provides, in plain language, a comprehensive and up-to-date manual of the rights and liabilities of landlords and tenants. A basic reference work for anyone concerned with landlord-tenant relations.
Book Synopsis Mobilizing New York by : Tamar W. Carroll
Download or read book Mobilizing New York written by Tamar W. Carroll and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining three interconnected case studies, Tamar Carroll powerfully demonstrates the ability of grassroots community activism to bridge racial and cultural differences and effect social change. Drawing on a rich array of oral histories, archival records, newspapers, films, and photographs from post–World War II New York City, Carroll shows how poor people transformed the antipoverty organization Mobilization for Youth and shaped the subsequent War on Poverty. Highlighting the little-known National Congress of Neighborhood Women, she reveals the significant participation of working-class white ethnic women and women of color in New York City's feminist activism. Finally, Carroll traces the partnership between the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) and Women's Health Action Mobilization (WHAM!), showing how gay men and feminists collaborated to create a supportive community for those affected by the AIDS epidemic, to improve health care, and to oppose homophobia and misogyny during the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s. Carroll contends that social policies that encourage the political mobilization of marginalized groups and foster coalitions across identity differences are the most effective means of solving social problems and realizing democracy.

Book Synopsis A Century of Violence in a Red City by : Lesley Gill
Download or read book A Century of Violence in a Red City written by Lesley Gill and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Century of Violence in a Red City Lesley Gill provides insights into broad trends of global capitalist development, class disenfranchisement and dispossession, and the decline of progressive politics. Gill traces the rise and fall of the strong labor unions, neighborhood organizations, and working class of Barrancabermeja, Colombia, from their origins in the 1920s to their effective activism for agrarian reforms, labor rights, and social programs in the 1960s and 1970s. Like much of Colombia, Barrancabermeja came to be dominated by alliances of right-wing politicians, drug traffickers, foreign corporations, and paramilitary groups. These alliances reshaped the geography of power and gave rise to a pernicious form of armed neoliberalism. Their violent incursion into Barrancabermeja's civil society beginning in the 1980s decimated the city's social networks, destabilized life for its residents, and destroyed its working-class organizations. As a result, community leaders are now left clinging to the toothless discourse of human rights, which cannot effectively challenge the status quo. In this stark book, Gill captures the grim reality and precarious future of Barrancabermeja and other places ravaged by neoliberalism and violence.

Download or read book Spirit of Rebellion written by Jarod Roll and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Herbert G. Gutman Prize from the Labor and Working-Class History Association In Spirit of Rebellion, Jarod Roll documents an alternative tradition of American protest by linking working-class political movements to grassroots religious revivals. He reveals how ordinary rural citizens in the south used available resources and their shared faith to defend their agrarian livelihoods amid the political and economic upheaval of the first half of the twentieth century. On the frontier of the New Cotton South in Missouri's Bootheel, the relationships between black and white farmers were complicated by racial tensions and bitter competition. Despite these divisions, workers found common ground as dissidents fighting for economic security, decent housing, and basic health, ultimately drawing on the democratic potential of evangelical religion to wage working-class revolts against commodity agriculture and the political forces that buoyed it. Roll convincingly shows how the moral clarity and spiritual vigor these working people found in the burgeoning Pentecostal revivals gave them the courage and fortitude to develop an expansive agenda of workers' rights by tapping into the powers of existing organizations such as the Socialist Party, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, the NAACP, and the interracial Southern Tenant Farmers' Union.

Book excerpt: "The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.
