Download or read book Land Reform in the British and Irish Isles Since 1800 written by Shaun Evans and published by Scotland's Land. This book was released on 2023-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comparative analysis of land issues and impact of reform across the British and Irish Isles, in Ireland, Scotland and Wales This book interrogates land issues and reform across the British and Irish Isles from c.1800 to 2021, with a particular focus on the period c.1830s-c.1940s. It builds on a rich body of work employing comparative approaches towards the 'Land Question' and the history of landed estates, drawing together fresh and original case studies which contextualise the historiographies of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The contributors draw out similarities but also highlight the distinctive nature of land issues and reform programmes across the four nations of the British and Irish Isles. Key themes and issues discussed in the chapters include estate management and relationships between landowner and tenant; land reform agendas; legislative programmes and their impacts; landowner perspectives; and comparisons and contrasts between the experience of reform in the UK. Shaun Evans is Director of the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates (ISWE) at Bangor University. Tony Mc Carthy is Visiting Fellow of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. Annie Tindley is Professor of British and Irish Rural History at Newcastle University.

Book Synopsis A Dictionary of Irish Saints by : Pádraig Ó Riain
Download or read book A Dictionary of Irish Saints written by Pádraig Ó Riain and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarcely a parish in Ireland is without one or more dedications to saints, in the form of churches in ruins, holy wells or other ecclesiastical monuments. Professor Pádraig Ó Riain's Dictionary of Irish Saints is intended to serve as a guide to the (mainly documentary) sources of information on the saints named in these dedications, for those who have an interest in them, scholarly or otherwise. The need for a summary biographical dictionary of Irish saints, containing information on such matters as feastdays, localisations, chronology, and genealogies, although stressed over sixty years ago by the eminent Jesuit and Bollandist scholar, Paul Grosjean, has never before been satisfied. Professor Ó Riain has been working in the field of Irish hagiography for upwards of forty years, and the material for the over 1,000 entries in his Dictionary has come from a variety of sources, including Lives of the saints, martyrologies, genealogies of the saints, shorter tracts on the saints (some of them accessible only in manuscripts), annals, annates, collections of folklore, Ordnance Survey letters, and other documents. Running to almost 700 pages, the body of the Dictionary is preceded by a Preface, List of Sources and Introduction, and is followed by comprehensive Indices of Parishes, Other Places (mainly townlands), Alternate (mainly Anglicised) Names, Subjects, and Feastdays. Professor Ó Riain's Dictionary has been described as 'an astonishingly comprehensive, intelligent and well-organized work'; it is unlikely to be superseded for many decades to come.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of Ireland: Volume 3, 1730–1880 by : James Kelly
Download or read book The Cambridge History of Ireland: Volume 3, 1730–1880 written by James Kelly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was an era of continuity as well as change. Though properly portrayed as the era of 'Protestant Ascendancy' it embraces two phases - the eighteenth century when that ascendancy was at its peak; and the nineteenth century when the Protestant elite sustained a determined rear-guard defence in the face of the emergence of modern Catholic nationalism. Employing a chronology that is not bound by traditional datelines, this volume moves beyond the familiar political narrative to engage with the economy, society, population, emigration, religion, language, state formation, culture, art and architecture, and the Irish abroad. It provides new and original interpretations of a critical phase in the emergence of a modern Ireland that, while focused firmly on the island and its traditions, moves beyond the nationalist narrative of the twentieth century to provide a history of late early modern Ireland for the twenty-first century.

Download or read book Brehon Laws written by Jo Kerrigan and published by The O'Brien Press Ltd. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the lifestyle and values of ancient Ireland Thousands of years ago, Celtic Ireland was a land of tribes and warriors; but a widely accepted, sophisticated and surprisingly enlightened legal system kept society running smoothly. The brehons were the keepers of these laws, which dealt with every aspect of life: land disputes; recompense for theft or violence; marriage and divorce processes; the care of trees and animals. Transmitted orally from ancient times, the laws were transcribed by monks around the fifth century, and what survived was translated by nineteenth-century scholars. Jo Kerrigan has immersed herself in these texts, revealing fascinating details that are inspiring for our world today. With atmospheric photographs by Richard Mills, an accessible introduction to a hidden gem of Irish heritage
