Book Synopsis A Comparison of Four Survey Techniques Used in Outdoor Recreation Research by : Elwood L. Shafer
Download or read book A Comparison of Four Survey Techniques Used in Outdoor Recreation Research written by Elwood L. Shafer and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Because of the great and growing interest in outdoor recreation, many studies are being made by private and public agencies that need information for planning use of land and facilities for recreational purposes. In these studies much attention is being given to the people who use recreational facilitieswho they are; where they come from; what they like; what they want; how much they are willing to spend. Many types of surveys are being used in studying these people. The main question in planning a survey of this sort is: What survey technique can be used that will provide the most reliable and valid results at the least cost? To get an answer that we could use in our recreation research program, we made a study of four different survey techniquesa personal interview, a handout questionnaire, an immediate mail questionnaire, and a delayed mail questionnaire. Results show that the delayed mail survey, conducted 3 months after the camping experience, gets the best results at the least cost. Our study is described here for the benefit of other research workers in outdoor recreation.S3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . the book provides a wide variety of practical examples of economic assessments of river management projects. . . the book offers policy-makers a nice range of valuation case studies and practical and illustrative guidance on the use of economic valuation results in cost benefit analysis of river management. Marije Schaafsma, Environmental and Resource Economics It is rare to find a book that attempts to integrate physical, biological and social sciences (economics) to address environmental problems, but this book does a great job of it. It is also rare to find a book that addresses both the benefits and the costs of river restoration, and again this book delivers. This collection of case studies provides an informative and practical guide to conducting economic analyses of many different types of river restoration. Scientists interested in quantifying the benefits and costs of river restoration will gain a very quick and thorough education from the case studies presented in this book. John Loomis, Colorado State University, US The book applies benefit cost analysis and a wide array of non-market and distribution economic valuation methods in ecologic context to determine the pay-off and distribution impacts of various infrastructure and water quality improvements to eight river systems in the Great Lakes region of the US. The generally positive results have important implications for public policy and future research. Prime readership is the wide range of academics, NGO and government agency staff and citizen action groups concerned with the management and protection of rivers and other natural resource systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All but forgotten except as a part of nostalgic lore, American canals during the first half of the nineteenth century provided a transportation network that was vital to the development of the new nation. They lowered transportation costs, carried a vast grain trade from western farms to eastern ports, delivered Pennsylvania coal to New York, and carried thousands of passengers at what seemed effortless speed. Along their courses sprang up new towns and cities and with them new economic growth. Canals for a Nation brings together in one volume a survey of all the major American canals. Here are accounts of innovative engineering, of near heroic figures who devoted their lives to canals, and of canal projects that triumphed over all the uncertainties of the political process.
