Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive Summary KGHM Ajax Mining Inc. proposes to construct, operate and decommission an open pit copper and gold mine adjacent to the southern limits of the City of Kamloops in British Columbia. The Ajax Mine Project would process up to 65,000 tonnes of ore per day over an operating mine life of up to 23 years. The Ajax Mine Project would have a footprint of approximately 1,700 hectares and would include an open pit, ore processing plant, tailings storage facility, mine rock storage facilities, and water and waste management systems. It would also include upgrades to an existing water intake on Kamloops Lake, a new 16 kilometre water line to transport water to the mine site, and a new 5.3 kilometre natural gas pipeline connecting with the Fortis pipeline near the community of Knutsford. A new 9 kilometre, 230 kilovolt transmission line would tie in with an existing BC Hydro power line near Knutsford to supply electricity to the Ajax Mine Project. The Inks Lake Interchange would be upgraded to provide direct access to the mine site from Highway 5 (Coquihalla Highway). The Ajax Mine Project was subject to review under both federal and provincial environmental assessment legislation, and a coordinated environmental assessment was carried out by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) and the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). The Agency and EAO prepared a joint federal Comprehensive Study/provincial Assessment Report that meets the requirements of both the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act, and which will inform separate environmental assessment decisions on the Ajax Mine Project by federal and provincial ministers.

This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind farms are an essential component of global renewable energy policy and the action to limit the effects of climate change. There is, however, considerable concern over the impacts of wind farms on wildlife, leading to a wide range of research and monitoring studies, a growing body of literature and several international conferences on the topic. This unique multi-volume work provides a comprehensive overview of the interactions between wind farms and wildlife. Volume 1 documents the current knowledge of the potential impacts upon wildlife during both construction and operation. An introductory chapter on the nature of wind farms and the impact assessment process is followed by a series of in-depth chapters documenting effects on climatic conditions, vegetation, terrestrial invertebrates, aquatic invertebrates and fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds, bats and terrestrial mammals. A synopsis of the known and potential effects of wind farms upon wildlife in perspective concludes the volume. The authors have been carefully selected from across the globe from the large number of academics, consultants and practitioners now engaged in wind farm studies, for their influential contribution to the science. Edited by Martin Perrow and with contributions by 40 leading researchers including: Robert Barclay, Michael Dillon, Jan Olof Helldin, Hermann Hötker, Jeffrey Lovich, Manuela de Lucas and Eugene Takle. The authors represent a wide range of organisations and institutions including the Universities of Calgary, Iowa State, Lund & Wyoming, US Geological Survey, Michael-Otto-Institut im NABU, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, Spanish Council for Scientific Research, Renewable Energy Systems and several leading consultancies. Each chapter includes informative figures, tables, colour photographs and detailed case studies. Many of the latter are produced stand-alone from invited additional authors to ensure geographic spread and to showcase exciting new, often previously unpublished research. This book is designed for practitioners, researchers, managers and for a range of students in higher education, particularly those involved with environmental, ecological, conservation, impact assessment and climate change studies. Other volumes: Volume 2: Onshore: Monitoring and Mitigation (978-1-78427-123-7) Volume 3: Offshore: Potential Effects (978-1-78427-127-5) Volume 4: Offshore: Monitoring and Mitigation (978-1-78427-131-2)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Read what over 60 internationally recognized authors say about fluvial processes, the environment, and management of gravel-bed rivers. Learn about efforts to restore more-natural ecosystem functions to adversely impacted rivers. And for some mind-stretching, consider the hydraulic/geomorphic implications of cataclysmic floods on Earth and Mars. Beginning in 1980 and held at five-year intervals, these workshops have brought together leading international researchers to present and discuss new results, concepts and state-of-the-art methods to analyze fluvial processes in and manage gravel-bed rivers. The fourth workshop was held at Gold Bar, Washington, near the dynamic Skykomish River and strikingly beautiful Cascade Mountains. Workshop papers and discussions are published to document new concepts and ideas for broad use by those who study, manage or have general interests in rivers. This fourth Gravel-Bed Rivers Workshop covers three focus topics. The first topic reviews new developments regarding fluvial processes, sediment transport and channel morphology -- in eight chapters on distinct subjects. The second and third focus topics strongly emphasize gravel-beds rivers in the environment, their influences, and their management -- in the next 19 chapters. River restoration is examined for large European and North American rivers as parts of several of the environment-management chapters. Seven appended "short papers" report on research in progress, presented at the Workshop in a poster-discussion session. Also included are two special-interest chapters -- on giving a detailed analysis and morphologic/hydraulic interpretation of cataclysmic floods and one summarizing a field exercise in management options for a long braided-meandering reach of the Skykomish River near Gold Bar."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book excerpt: This document explores the importance of riparian ecosystems to the broader landscape, including their value as habitat and as filters and storage areas for water and nutrients. It also reviews the types of disturbances that can affect riparian areas, including natural disturbances such as fires and floods as well as human disturbances from logging, mining, recreational activity, agriculture, urban development, and hydropower generation. Finally, the document reviews the legal protection provided for riparian areas in British Columbia outlining a management strategy to sustain the biological functioning of riparian areas while still providing for other essential human needs.
