Book Synopsis The Political Economy of the Agri-Food System in Thailand by : Prapimphan Chiengkul
Download or read book The Political Economy of the Agri-Food System in Thailand written by Prapimphan Chiengkul and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mainstream agri-food system in Thailand has been shaped to aid capital accumulation by domestic and transnational hegemonic forces, and is currently sustained through hegemonic agri-food production-distribution, governance structures and ideational order. However, sustainable agriculture and land reform movements have to certain extents managed to offer alternatives. This book adopts a neo-Marxist and Gramscian approach to studying the political economy of the agricultural and food system in Thailand (1990-2014). The author argues that hegemonic forces have many measures to co-opt dissent into hegemonic structures, and that counter-hegemony should be seen as an ongoing process over a long period of time where predominantly counter-hegemonic forces, constrained by political economic structural conditions, may at times retain some hegemonic elements. Contrary to what some academic studies suggest, the author argues that localist-inspired social movements in Thailand are not insular and anti-globalisation. Instead, they are selective in fostering collaborations and globalisation based on values such as sustainability, fairness and partnership. Providing new perspectives on polarised politics in Thailand, particularly how cross-class alliances can further or frustrate counter-hegemonic movements, the book points to the importance of analysing social movements in relation to established political authority. It will be of interest to academics in the field of Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Development Studies and Asian Studies.

Book Synopsis Thailand--a Market for U.S. Products by : Paul A. Mayer
Download or read book Thailand--a Market for U.S. Products written by Paul A. Mayer and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand is an excellent market for American goods. Political stability, traditional friendship with the United States, popularity of American products, sound fiscal and economic management, and gradual industrialization with a resulting rise in individual purchasing power--all create a welcoming climate for sales of U.S. products. In recognition of this potential, Bangkok has been chosen as the site for a new U.S. Trade Center serving the entire Southeast Asian area. This study is part of the Department of Commerce's continuing effort toward increasing U.S. exports and the general stimulating of our international trade. The expansion of American-Thai economic relations will not only assist in improving our balance of payments and thus aid American economic growth, but can also contribute substantially to the well-being of the Thai people.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Cooperative Movement by : Jack Shaffer
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Cooperative Movement written by Jack Shaffer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999-08-31 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are found everywhere, doing all kinds of things. They are critical elements in the economies of a large number of countries around the world, large and small. Their affairs are carried out by elected leadership that runs the gamut from the illiterate to the scholarly. Their membership is made up of people of all socio-economic backgrounds. It is those members who, through their support and their needs, determine the successes and failures of cooperatives. But cooperatives as a popular movement will also be judged in other ways. A judgment will be made on the totality of their impact: local, national, and international. People will ask about how they helped ameliorate the economic and social problems of the dispossessed. But they will also inquire about their influence on economic systems, whether these were made more humane, egalitarian, and inclusive in their benefits because of cooperative principles and practices. Their impact on the international order will be judged collectively by how they contributed more than resolutions to peace, to justice, and to human inclusiveness. This volume provides snapshot views of the cooperative movement in all its diversity. The only single source one can consult to find so much information on the different kinds of cooperatives, significant figures, including philosophers, pioneers, officials, and leaders, and the situation in a large number of countries. With a list of acronyms, an extensive chronology, appendixes, and a comprehensive bibliography.
