Book excerpt: Excerpt from Combat Vehicle Active Protection Systems: Hearing Before the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee of the Committee on Armed Services, House of Representatives, One Hundred Ninth Congress, Second Session, Hearing Held September 21, 2006 So we have a situation where Central Command has validated an urgent requirement for an active protection system. The Office of Force Transformation indicates that a system could be fielded in the first half of next year, 2007. Yet the Office of the Secretary of Defense has decided to not field a capability until 2011 at the carli est. We would like to understand what factors went into this deci sion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 53. Chapters: Armoured fighting vehicle equipment, Suspension, Hydropneumatic suspension, T-26 variants, Mine flail, Gun turret, Arena, Advanced Modular Armor Protection, Trophy, Active protection system, Torsion bar suspension, Oscillating turret, Leaf spring, Christie suspension, AMAP-ADS, Quick Kill, Rupture disc, Mbombe, Shtora, Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar, Bustle rack, Mine roller, Drozd, Nakidka, Kontakt-5, Vertical volute spring suspension, Bore evacuator, Iron Fist, Mine plow, MUSS, Thermal sleeve, LEDS-150, Horstmann suspension, EuroPowerPack. Excerpt: Suspension is the term given to the system of springs, shock absorbers and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels. Suspension systems serve a dual purpose - contributing to the car's roadholding/handling and braking for good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations, etc. These goals are generally at odds, so the tuning of suspensions involves finding the right compromise. It is important for the suspension to keep the road wheel in contact with the road surface as much as possible, because all the forces acting on the vehicle do so through the contact patches of the tires. The suspension also protects the vehicle itself and any cargo or luggage from damage and wear. The design of front and rear suspension of a car may be different. This article is primarily about four-wheeled (or more) vehicle suspension. For information on two-wheeled vehicles' suspensions see the suspension (motorcycle), motorcycle fork, bicycle suspension, and bicycle fork articles. Leaf springs have been around since the early Egyptians. Ancient military engineers used leaf springs in the form of bows to power their siege engines, with little success at first. The use of leaf..

Download or read book 2019 Missile Defense Review written by Department Of Defense and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof each document to make sure it's all there - including all changes. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these large documents as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound, full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. https: //usgovpub.com

Book Synopsis Machine Learning Control – Taming Nonlinear Dynamics and Turbulence by : Thomas Duriez
Download or read book Machine Learning Control – Taming Nonlinear Dynamics and Turbulence written by Thomas Duriez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first textbook on a generally applicable control strategy for turbulence and other complex nonlinear systems. The approach of the book employs powerful methods of machine learning for optimal nonlinear control laws. This machine learning control (MLC) is motivated and detailed in Chapters 1 and 2. In Chapter 3, methods of linear control theory are reviewed. In Chapter 4, MLC is shown to reproduce known optimal control laws for linear dynamics (LQR, LQG). In Chapter 5, MLC detects and exploits a strongly nonlinear actuation mechanism of a low-dimensional dynamical system when linear control methods are shown to fail. Experimental control demonstrations from a laminar shear-layer to turbulent boundary-layers are reviewed in Chapter 6, followed by general good practices for experiments in Chapter 7. The book concludes with an outlook on the vast future applications of MLC in Chapter 8. Matlab codes are provided for easy reproducibility of the presented results. The book includes interviews with leading researchers in turbulence control (S. Bagheri, B. Batten, M. Glauser, D. Williams) and machine learning (M. Schoenauer) for a broader perspective. All chapters have exercises and supplemental videos will be available through YouTube.

This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War, the evolving mission of the U.S. Armed Services, the dramatic improvements in commercial manufacturingâ€"these and other trends are changing how we provide for the common defense. What will we need in the way of defense manufacturing in the year 2010â€"a short few years away? How should we best spend our defense funds? Defense Manufacturing in 2010 and Beyond sets forth a vision for the nation's defense manufacturing, including policies, technologies, systems, processes, practices, and financial implications. Eight specific trends are forecastâ€"defense spending, the relationship between defense and commerical industries, the nature of the threat to our nation, the emergence of new technologies, and other areasâ€"and their implications for defense manufacturing are explored. The committee describes manufacturing advancements that are around the cornerâ€"virtual enterprise, and moreâ€"and examines how these breakthroughs will likely meet or fail to meet defense manufacturing requirements. This expert panel identifies the highest priorities and recommends strategies for matching future manufacturing capabilities with our defense needs. February
Book Synopsis Tactical Display for Soldiers by : National Research Council
Download or read book Tactical Display for Soldiers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-01-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the human factors issues associated with the development, testing, and implementation of helmet-mounted display technology in the 21st Century Land Warrior System. Because the framework of analysis is soldier performance with the system in the full range of environments and missions, the book discusses both the military context and the characteristics of the infantry soldiers who will use the system. The major issues covered include the positive and negative effects of such a display on the local and global situation awareness of the individual soldier, an analysis of the visual and psychomotor factors associated with each design feature, design considerations for auditory displays, and physical sources of stress and the implications of the display for affecting the soldier's workload. The book proposes an innovative approach to research and testing based on a three-stage strategy that begins in the laboratory, moves to controlled field studies, and culminates in operational testing.
