Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Anglicanism is a major new and unprecedented international study of the identity and historical influence of one of the world's largest versions of Christianity. This global study of Anglicanism from the sixteenth century looks at how was Anglican identity constructed and contested at various periods since the sixteenth century; and what was its historical influence during the past six centuries. It explores not just the ecclesiastical and theological aspects of global Anglicanism, but also the political, social, economic, and cultural influences of this form of Christianity that has been historically significant in western culture, and a burgeoning force in non-western societies today. The chapters are written by international exports in their various historical fields which includes the most recent research in their areas, as well as original research. The series forms an invaluable reference for both scholars and interested non-specialists. Volume one of The Oxford History of Anglicanism examines a period when the nature of 'Anglicanism' was still heavily contested. Rather than merely tracing the emergence of trends that we associate with later Anglicanism, the contributors instead discuss the fluid and contested nature of the Church of England's religious identity in these years, and the different claims to what should count as 'Anglican' orthodoxy. After the introduction and narrative chapters explain the historical background, individual chapters then analyse different understandings of the early church and church history; variant readings of the meaning of the royal supremacy, the role of bishops and canon law, and cathedrals; the very diverse experiences of religion in parishes, styles of worship and piety, church decoration, and Bible usage; and the competing claims to 'Anglican' orthodoxy of puritanism, 'avant-garde conformity' and Laudianism. Also analysed are arguments over the Church of England's confessional identity and its links with the foreign Reformed Churches, and the alternative models provided by English Protestant activities in Ireland, Scotland and North America. The reforms of the 1640s and 1650s are included in their own right, and the volume concludes that the shape of the Restoration that emerged was far from inevitable, or expressive of a settled 'Anglican' identity.

Excerpt: ...unless it help us in the attaining of life eternal; neither is it any blessing, unless ita disponatur de minimo, quemadmodum convenit summo, ' the least thing be so disposed of, as that it conduceth to the greatest, ' or at least so as that periculum non fiat de maximo, ' hazard of the greatest matter be not incurred.' Why long life is given to the wicked. Object. But why doth God give long life to the wicked seeing it is here promised to the godly? Answ. For divers reasons; 1. To prove if at any time they will be brought to repentance, 2 Tim. ii. 25. 2. God respecteth their progeny; as cutting off wicked Amon, good Josiah succeeded him, 2 Kings xxi. 24; and cutting off Ahaz, good Hezekiah succeeded him, 2 Kings xvi. 20; now that these good kings might come of them, He first suffered those wicked kings to live long before they were cut off. 3. Because He must have rods of His wrath to punish His disobedient children, and for trial of His church; Esay x. 5, " O Assyrian, the rod of Mine anger, and the staff in their hand is Mine indignation." 4. Every one of us may learn an universal document from hence, Rom. ix. 22; if God, to make His wrath and power known, suffer with long patience the vessels of wrath prepared to destruction, we must learn much more to be patient and long-suffering in those injuries that are done to us. 5. To conclude this point, and so to make an end of this commandment; if God do give long life unto the wicked, He will be even with them for it another way; as we may see, Esay lxvi. 24, a. the godly shall come forth and look upon their condemned carcasses; /S. their worm shall never die; that is, the worm of their Part conscience shall evermore trouble them; though their '---. life be longa, 'long/ it shall...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth Stevenson is one of the UK's leading liturgical scholars with an international reputation. Much of his work is in the borderlands of theology, worship and history. The essays in this book are worked examples of the importance of interpretation and liturgy, particularly in the light of the growing impact in recent years of reception-history, and how this interacts not only with biblical scholarship but with worship and doctrine as well. Interpretation and Liturgy is a big subject, and one that is unlikely ever to go away. It is part of the twofold movement of divine initiative and human aspiration - or to put it yet more directly, what some would immediately call the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, others would call the religious imagination, and others again would call both.

Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Classical Reception (OHCREL) is designed to offer a comprehensive investigation of the numerous and diverse ways in which literary texts of the classical world have stimulated responses and refashioning by English writers. Covering the full range of English literature from the early Middle Ages to the present day, OHCREL both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge new research, employing an international team of expert contributors for each of the five volumes. OHCREL endeavours to interrogate, rather than inertly reiterate, conventional assumptions about literary 'periods', the processes of canon-formation, and the relations between literary and non-literary discourse. It conceives of 'reception' as a complex process of dialogic exchange and, rather than offering large cultural generalizations, it engages in close critical analysis of literary texts. It explores in detail the ways in which English writers' engagement with classical literature casts as much light on the classical originals as it does on the English writers' own cultural context. This second volume, and third to appear in the series, covers the years 1558-1660, and explores the reception of the ancient genres and authors in English Renaissance literature, engaging with the major, and many of the minor, writers of the period, including Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser, and Jonson. Separate chapters examine the Renaissance institutions and contexts which shape the reception of antiquity, and an annotated bibliography provides substantial material for further reading.
