Book Synopsis Dare to Make History by : Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson
Download or read book Dare to Make History written by Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and published by Radius Book Group. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dare to Make History is the story of two courageous and talented women who weren’t willing to accept anything less than being treated as equals. On their journey to a gold medal in women’s ice hockey, they became role models for generations before and after them. Twins Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando started playing ice hockey with their four older brothers and their friends on a frozen pond next to their home in North Dakota. No girls hockey teams, no problem―they just played on boys teams. They went on to win six World Championships and played in three Olympics, winning two silver medals and ultimately a gold medal in South Korea in 2018 for the USA Women’s National Team. They did not allow roadblocks and discrimination deter them from taking on their governing body—USA Hockey—threatening to boycott the 2017 World Championships and jeopardizing their ability to compete in the 2018 Olympics unless their gender equity issues were addressed. The success of Monique, Jocelyne, and their team thrust them into the center of the struggle for gender equity, for women in hockey and in sports in general, as well as in society at large. In Dare to Make History, the Lamoureux twins chronicle their journey to the pinnacle of their sport, their efforts along with almost 150 other hockey players to start a new professional women’s hockey league, their training to come back and make another national team after giving birth, their tireless efforts to advance the interests of disadvantaged communities in closing the digital divide, and their ongoing contributions as role models championing the dreams of future generations of girls in sports, education, and the workplace. This is not a hockey book. It is not a girls book. It is a book about the importance of the fight for equity, particularly gender equity. It is the inspirational story of how two young women from a small town in North Dakota have dreamed big—had the courage to take on huge battles—and in the end how they have dared to make history.
Book Synopsis Creating Visual Schedules by : Johanne Mainville
Download or read book Creating Visual Schedules written by Johanne Mainville and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or intellectual disabilities (ID) generally have deficits in executive function and memory, and consequently have difficulty orienting themselves in time. The Schedule Evaluation Tool (SET) was developed in response to these specific needs, using a visual schedule. It helps people working with individuals with ASD or ID to determine the type of schedule best suited to their needs and abilities, and to integrate it into their living environment, promoting independence and a better quality of life. The SET includes materials, protocols and a manual that allow practitioners and professionals to assess the schedule of children, adolescents and adults in various settings such as educational daycare, school, internship or employment and residential settings. It is divided into four distinct parts. The first part involves the manipulation of objects, photographs, pictograms and words in a formal assessment context. The second and third parts take place directly in the setting where the schedule is to be implemented. The fourth part is administered in the form of an interview with the person who knows the person best in the context where the schedule will be introduced. Available formats: hardcover, trade paperback, accessible PDF, and accessible ePub

Download or read book Ravel written by Roger Nichols and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new biography of Maurice Ravel (1875–1937), by one of the leading scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French music, is based on a wealth of written and oral evidence, some newly translated and some derived from interviews with the composer’s friends and associates. As well as describing the circumstances in which Ravel composed, the book explores new evidence to present radical views of the composer’s background and upbringing, his notorious failure in the Prix de Rome, his incisive and often combative character, his sexual preferences, and his long final illness. It also contains the most detailed account so far published of his hugely successful American tour of 1928. The world of Maurice Ravel—including friendships (and some fallings-out) with Debussy, Faur, Diaghilev, Gershwin, and Toscanini—is deftly uncovered in this sensitive portrait.

Book excerpt: From casting to sculpture Cast materials become solid, yet they originate as fluid materials that can take on any imaginable form. This simple yet radical paradigm allows for the exploration of volumetric formations through process-oriented casting and experimentation with alternative ways of manufacturing, presenting, and shaping casting molds. Working with hardening bodies fundamentally challenges the notion of formal rigidity; conventional formwork models are reconsidered, and a new aesthetic emerges. Fluid Bodies presents a variety of objects created using alternative casting methods. The book documents experimental artistic research and showcases innovative and surprising sculptures in concrete and plaster. Alternative ways of manufacturing, presenting, and shaping casting molds Concrete and plaster sculptures, parametric designs, and the further development of conventional formwork models and casting processes With numerous large-format photographs
