Book excerpt: Abstract: An approximate method is presented for the estimation of the properties of the incompressible laminar boundary layer on a flat plate in the slip-flow regime using Kármán's momentum method. These results are compared with results for a normal boundary layer at the same Reynolds number to bring out the characteristics of a slip boundary layer. A simple criterion for the importance of slip is presented.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation of hypersonic laminar boundary-layer/shock-wave interactions using the method of MacCormack to solve the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Comparisons of the numerical solutions with experimental data were made to ascertain the validity of the numerical method and to identify regions of anomalous behavior. The algorithm gave good results when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions that caused either small or no separated regions and marginal performance when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions having large regions of separated flow. The extents of the separated regions in interactions having large regions of separated flow were underpredicted when compared with experimental data. The predicted wall heat-transfer rates exhibited the correct qualitative trend but not the experimentally measured quantitative values. Consideration of the effects of needed stabilizing terms as well as grid resolution suggests inadequate mesh spacing in the longitudinal direction as the cause of the aforementioned anomalies. If inadequate mesh spacing (and the corresponding lack of support for every term of the Navier-Stokes equations) is a prime cause of the cited discrepancies between the numerical results and the experimental data, then the needed reduction of several orders of magnitude in delta x, would increase CPU time and core storage requirements to untenable levels. The viscosity of the fluid is taken to be governed by Sutherland's law, which gives a much more accurate representation of the temperature dependence of fluid viscosity at hypersonic speeds than Chapmans's approximate linear law; although at lower speeds the temperature variation of the mean state is less pronounced so that the Chapman law can be used with some confidence. Attention is focussed on the so-called vorticity mode of instability of the viscous hypersonic boundary layer. The instability of the hypersonic boundary layer is non-interactive. The vorticity mode of instability of this flow operates on a significantly different lengthscale than that obtained if a Chapman viscosity law is assumed. The growth rate predicted by a linear viscosity law overestimates the size of the growth rate by O (M-sq). Next, the development of the vorticity mode as the wavenumber decreases is described, and it is shown that acoustic modes emerge when the wavenumber has decreased from it's O(1) initial value to O (M to the -3/2 power). Book excerpt: This report describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of the properties of attached and separated regions of shock wave-laminar boundary layer interacting in the strong interaction regime. The flow is studied over a flat plate-wedge compression surface in the high Mach number, low Reynolds number regime where the interaction between the viscous and inviscid regions over the basic flat plate is strong and of fundamental importance to the problem. The theoretical analysis treats the development of the viscous layer and its interaction with the external inviscid stream, using an integral representation for the boundary layer equations. A complementary experimental study investigated the flow over a flat plate-wedge compression surface for a range of free-stream Reynolds number and Mach number conditions in the strong interaction regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compressible axisymmetric laminar boundary layer is considered for very large values of the transverse curvature parameter (roughly proportional to the ratio of the Mangler value of the boundary layer displacement thickness to the local cross-sectional radius of the body). Asymptotic expansions are constructed using the method of inner-outer expansions and verified by comparison with exact numerical similarity solutions. Both finite and hypersonic Mach number inviscid flow conditions are considered. The principal results are asymptotic formulas for skin friction, heat transfer, and boundary layer displacement thickness. Existing expansions, obtained by Wei, are found to be incorrect. The viscous pressure interaction near the vertex of a pointed axisymmetric body is treated within the framework of boundary layer theory and a tangent-cone approximation. (Author).
