Book excerpt: Foundations, Research, and Assessment of Fraternities and Sororities is inspired by continuing conversations about the enduring challenges facing fraternities and sororities on campuses across the country. Download or read book Poetics written by Aristotle and published by Phoemixx Classics Ebooks. This book was released on 2021-11-14 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetics Aristotle - Aristotle's Poetics (Greek: Peri poietikês; Latin: De Poetica; c. 335 BC) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first extant philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory. In this text Aristotle offers an account of , which refers to poetry or more literally "the poetic art," deriving from the term for "poet; author; maker," . Aristotle divides the art of poetry into verse drama (to include comedy, tragedy, and the satyr play), lyric poetry, and epic. The genres all share the function of mimesis, or imitation of life, but differ in three ways that Aristotle describes: Differences in music rhythm, harmony, meter and melody. Difference of goodness in the characters. Difference in how the narrative is presented: telling a story or acting it out. The analysis of tragedy in the Poetics constitutes the core of the discussion. Although the text is universally acknowledged in the Western critical tradition, "almost every detail about his seminal work has aroused divergent opinions". The work was lost to the Western world for a long time. It was available in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance only through a Latin translation of an Arabic version written by Averroes.

We may attempt to solve the challenges of our times by uniting the humanistic disciplines of philosophy, science, and technology. Our modern reality requires a fundamental understanding of the problems beleaguering our existence. Science and literature are key tools for gaining this insight. The wisdom accumulated throughout the centuries by scientists, philosophers, and writers is a solid foundation on which modern man can build the future. Our ability to learn from those who have come before is precisely what led Protagoras to declare that “Man is the measure of all things.” Contents: Poetics by Aristotle The Athenian Constitution by Aristotle On Life and Death by Aristotle Agamemnon by Aeschylus The Eumenides by Aeschylus The Choephori by Aeschylus Meditations by Marcus Aurelius Medea by Euripides The Works and Days by Hesiod The Theogony by Hesiod The Shield of Heracles by Hesiod The Odyssey by Homer The Apology of Socrates by Plato Charmides by Plato Crito by Plato Euthyphro by Plato Ion by Plato Laches by Plato Lysis by Plato Menexenus by Plato The Republic by Plato The Allegory of the Cave by Plato Symposium by Plato Meno by Plato Phaedo by Plato Critias by Plato The Complete Poems by Sappho Antigone by Sophocles
