Considéré comme un modèle d'accord commercial-suffisamment souple pour s'adapter aux exigences de la mondialisation et assez robuste pour faciliter l'accès à des formes supérieures d'intégration -, l'ALENA a introduit une dynamique nouvelle au plan intégratif et institutionnel. Pourtant, l'accord apparaît bel et bien en défaut à l'heure actuelle : ceux qui y étaient favorables craignent qu'il ne soit plus en mesure de faire face à de nouveaux défis et ceux qui y étaient hostiles lui reprochent d'exacerber les asymétries économiques, sociales et politiques à l'intérieur de l'espace nord-américain. La question de fond est donc désormais posée : doit-on en rester là ou doit-on prévoir autre chose ? Pour faire le tour de la question, cet ouvrage fait appel à des contributions venant des trois pays signataires de l'accord. Tandis que, de plusieurs horizons en même temps, viennent des propositions en vue de rouvrir les négociations, les auteurs portent un regard à la fois critique et prospectif sur l'ALENA : ils dressent un certain nombre de bilans et s'interrogent sur l'avenir en traçant diverses perspectives, notamment celle d'une union douanière. La collection " Points chauds " propose les études des meilleurs spécialistes sur les enjeux politiques, économiques et diplomatiques du monde actuel.
