Book excerpt: The cult of Lakulisa, the foremost amongst the Pasupata sects has not received the attention of the scholars which it deserved. Although a few stray articles did appear in some notable journals and modern texts, the authentic history of the order was the need of the hour. From Kayavarohana in Gujarat, the cult travelled to various parts of India including Payar in Kashmir, Orissa in the east and many temple sites in the south including Tamil Nadu. The monumental discovery of Karvan Mahatmya revealed for the first time lesser known facts about Lakulisa and the Ganakarika provided valuable information about the rituals and methods of worship. The discovery of Lakulisa images in all parts of India proves that the faith was well accepted by the common people. He is represented as a saint, teacher, yogin and a man of divinity and considered by his followers as an incarnation of Siva. In the present text, attempt has been made to incorporate the history and antiquity of Siva worship and the emergence of Lakulisa order. The monograph broadly discusses the saliant features of Lakulisa Pasupatas and throws welcome light on the genesis and development of the faith.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of the Nātha Sampradāya in Western India, 12th to 15th Century by : Vijay Sarde
Download or read book The Archaeology of the Nātha Sampradāya in Western India, 12th to 15th Century written by Vijay Sarde and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies Nātha sampradāya through archaeological evidence for the first time. Drawing on a pioneering approach to the study of ascetic traditions, it investigates not only the nature of the Nātha sampradāya’s religious architecture but also examines the extent to which they shared space with other religious groups such as the devotees of Siva and Sakti, Buddhism, and Islam, especially with the Sufi tradition. Focusing on western India, the book sifts through a variety of archaeological evidence and documentation of their temples, caves, and maṭhas. It critically analyses iconographic representations of ascetics on temple walls and sculptural representations of yogic postures or āsanas. Further, these representations are discussed within a pan-South Asian framework to highlight both the commonalities of the tradition across the subcontinent and the regional specificities, along with their chronological spread. Breaking new ground, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of religion, especially Hinduism, history, archaeology, and South Asian studies.

Book Synopsis The Square and the Circle of the Indian Arts by : Kapila Vatsyayan
Download or read book The Square and the Circle of the Indian Arts written by Kapila Vatsyayan and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1997 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Square and the Circle of the Indian Arts is a major contribution in Indian art history. More than a book on the theories of arts, it has far-reaching implications for the way one thinks about the future of indology and art history. It provides a model to be emulated for inter-disciplinary research, not only between the arts but also the sciences and the arts. The book begins by re-examining the imagery of the Vedas and the Upanisads, highlighting some aspects of early speculative thought which influenced the enunciation of aesthetic theories, particularly of Bharata in the Natyasastra. The next chapter introduces a new methodology of analyzing the rituals (yajna) as laid down in the Yajurveda and the Satapatha Brahmana, the best way to focus the relationship between the text and the practice. Four chapters follow – one each on drama (natya), architecture (vastu), sculpture (silpa), and music (sangita). Each presents some fundamental concepts of speculative thought, concerned with each of the arts and purposefully correlates these with actual examples both of the past and the present. The afterward to this second edition remains an event not only because the book benefits from the works published since the first edition, but also because it presents the author’s integral vision and her unique adventure into the boundaries of several disciplines. It demonstrates the efficacy of her earlier approach of investigating the imagery and the metaphors as basic to the discourse of the Indian tradition. She proposes a multi-layered cluster of concepts and metaphors which enable one to uncode the complex multi-dimensional character of the Indian Arts. Also significantly she suggests a deeper comprehension of the relevance of the developments in the field of traditional mathematics and biology for the study of the language of form of the Indian Arts.
