Book excerpt: Lakeland, the historical African American community of College Park, was formed around 1890 on the doorstep of the Maryland Agricultural College, now the University of Maryland, in northern Prince George's County. Located less than 10 miles from Washington, D.C., the community began when the area was largely rural and overwhelmingly populated by European Americans. Lakeland is one of several small, African American communities along the U.S. Route 1 corridor between Washington, D.C., and Laurel, Maryland. With Lakeland's central geographic location and easy access to train and trolley transportation, it became a natural gathering place for African American social and recreational activities, and it thrived until its self-contained uniqueness was undermined by the federal government's urban renewal program and by societal change. The story of Lakeland is the tale of a community that was established and flourished in a segregated society and developed its own institutions and traditions, including the area's only high school for African Americans, built in 1928.

Book excerpt: Lakes define not only Canada's landscape but the national imagination. Blending writing on nature, travel, and science, award-winning journalist Allan Casey systematically explores how the country's history and culture originates at the lakeshore. Lakeland describes a series of interconnected journeys by the author, punctuated by the seasons and the personalities he meets along the way including aboriginal fishery managers, fruit growers, boat captains, cottagers, and scientists. Together they form an evocative portrait of these beloved bodies of water and what they mean, from sapphire tarns above the Rocky Mountain tree line to the ponds of western Newfoundland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Comprehensive Owner's Guide to the Lakeland Terrier serves as a complete introduction to this unique British terrier breed known for its prowess at seeking both quarry and comedy. The Lakey, as the breed is affectionately known, is a free-thinking little devil, smaller than most of the other long-legged terriers and more easygoing. The Lakeland Terrier, named for the Lake District in Britain, is unspoiled compared to many of his more popular earthdog brethren, and yet he is equally as bold, daring, and fearless as the larger Airedale, Irish, and Welsh Terriers.Written by Patricia Peters, well-known dog illustrator and Lakeland Terrier breeder of the famed Kilfel Kennels, this "Special Limited Edition" offers an opening chapter on the history of the breed, from its beginnings in the Lake District to its coming to the United States in the 1920s. The chapters on characteristics and the breed standard encapsulate all of the virtues and potential drawbacks of this cocky, little terrier breed, offering sound advice about which owners are best suited to handle the cunning "con artist" and clown of the Terrier Group.Potential owners will welcome the chapter on finding a breeder and selecting a health, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with handsome adults and puppies bursting with intelligence and mischief! In all, there are over 135 photographs in this compact, useful, and entertaining volume. The author's advice on obedience training the Lakeland Terrier, a bright and industrious breed that can pose a challenge to novice owners, will help readers better mold and train their dogs into the well-behaved canine citizens. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, parasites, infectious diseases, and more. A chapter on senior dog care gives readers insight into what's required to care for these long-lived terriers once they reach their golden years. A chapter on competing with the Lakeland Terrier in dog shows and various trials sponsored by the American Kennel Club gives owners a glimpse into the many possibilities of participating with their Lakeys in the dog sport. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as specialty shows, dental care, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, and parasite control.

Book excerpt: In this unique book, readers are taken on a journey to explore the role of the imagination in the face of mystery, whether it be the mystery of God, whose full reality lies beyond our earthly horizons, or the deepest mysteries of life hinted at in the work of fiction. By attending to a series of novels, Paul Lakeland proposes serious fiction as an antidote to the failure of the religious imagination today and shows how literature might lead the secular mind at least to the threshold of mystery.

Book excerpt: With a naturalist’s eye and a poet’s instinct, acclaimed nature writer Jim Crumley traces the place of our first and most famous National Park in the evolution of global conservation and pleads the case for a far-reaching reappraisal of its wildness. Books of the Year, Mark Avery The Lake District is one of England’s busiest national parks. Many people believe that wildness is long gone from the fells, lakes, tarns and becks, yet, within its boundaries, Jim Crumley sets out to prove them wrong—to find “a new way of seeing and writing about this most seen and written about of landscapes." With a naturalist’s eye and a poet’s instinct, he is drawn to Lakeland’s turned-aside places where nature still thrives, from low-lying shores to a high mountain oakwood that is not even on the map. Through backwaters and backwoods, Crumley traces this captivating land’s place in the evolution of global conservation and pleads the case for a far-reaching reappraisal of all of Lakeland’s wildness.

The small town that encompasses dozens of lakes was perfectly named in 1883, and grew to include an eclectic mix of downtown buildings, elegant hotels, roadways, handsome parks, and picturesque neighborhoods. By mid-century, Lakeland had grown to support small industries, churches, several schools, an airport, and two small colleges, one of which features the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lumen Gentium, Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, changed how the church thinks about the laity, holiness, baptism, and even the nature and purpose of the church itself. In A Council That Will Never End, the highly regarded ecclesiologist Paul Lakeland marks the fiftieth anniversary of this document's promulgation by taking up three major themes of the constitution, analyzing the text, and identifying some of the questions with which it leaves us. These themes are the role of the bishop in the church and the ways Lumen Gentium's teaching relates to various tensions in today's church the laity and in particular the mixed blessing of describing them in the category of "secularity" and the relationships between the church and the people of God and what they tell us about the ways in which all people are offered salvation. Lakeland is convinced that Lumen Gentium leaves much unfinished business (as any historical document must), that attending to it will take us beyond much of the now sterile ecclesial divisions, and that the ecclesiology of humility it implies marks the way that theology must guide the church in the years ahead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in the Short Walks in Lakeland trilogy, which also covers North Lakeland (book 2) and West Lakeland (book 3). This guide divides South Lakeland into four regions: the Central Fells; the area around Coniston Water and Windermere; the Eastern Fells and Dales; the Limestone Fringe. 60 short walks are described, generally between 4 and 9 miles, enough to pleasantly fill a good half-day, and ideal for day visitors or family walkers. Some longer walks could be split, others combined. It is not a high fell walking guide, although several popular summits are included. Priority is given to the lower fells and dales, which are as rewarding as their higher brethren. The combination of detailed description and clear, easy-to-follow maps and evocative sketches makes this book ideal for anyone who wants to explore Lakeland. If you work your way through the walks you will retain many rich memories of some of England's most scenic countryside.
