Book excerpt: Written 40 years ago, Islam and Secularism is one of the most creative and original works of a Muslim thinker in the contemporary Muslim world. The author deals with fundamental problems faced by contemporary Muslims and provides real solutions, beginning with a discussion on 'The Contemporary Western Christian Background' in Chapter (I), followed by his analysis of the concepts (which he newly defines) of 'secular', 'secularization', and 'secularism' in Chapter (II). All this is then contrasted in Chapter (IV) of the book entitled 'Islam: The Concept of Religion and the Foundation of Ethics and Morality'. Based on all the preceding explanation, the author proceeds to analyze the Muslim 'dilemma' by declaring that it should be resolved primarily through what he calls the "dewesternization of knowledge" or, conversely, the "islamization of contemporary knowledge", an original concept conceived and elucidated by the author for the past five decades. Numerous original and profound ideas are contained in this book-arrived at chiefly through critical study of the Muslim tradition-such as the concepts of dīn, 'adl, ḥikmah, adab, ma'nā, and ta'dīb, and their significance in the development of an Islamic system of education. The rationale for the Islamization of contemporary knowledge and the establishment of a truly Islamic university was in fact provided for the first time in contemporary Muslim thought by this author long before the appearance of the present book, which explains these interconnected subjects more concisely. Further, the appendix entitled, 'On Islamization: The Case of the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago' is an actual explanation and application of the seminal ideas discussed in the book. This is a must-read for all Muslims and those concerned with the problems and effects of secularization in our world today. Islam and Secularism is a development of ideas contained in the many paragraphs of another book in Malay entitled: Risalah Untuk Kaum Muslimin, which the author wrote and completed during the first few months of 1974. Due to many circumstances which demanded the author's attention at home and ahmad, however, the Risalah has not yet been sent to the press. In this book, what is contained in Chapter III was composed and completed during the month of Ramaḍān of 1395 (1975), and delivered as a Lecture under the same title to the International Islamic Conference held in April 1976 at the Royal Commonwealth Society, London, in conjunction with the World of Islam Festival celebrated there that year. It was published as a monograph in the same year by the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM), Kuala Lumpur, and in 1978 it appeared, together with other Lectures delivered on the same occasion by various Muslim scholars, in a book of one volume entitled: The Challenge of Islam, edited by Altaf Gauhar and published by the Islamic Council of Europe, London. All the other Chapters of the book were begun in March 1977 and completed in April of the same year, during my appointment as Visiting Scholar and Professor of Islamics at the Department of Religion, Temple University, Philadelphia, U.S.A., in the Winter and Spring of 1976-1977. What is contained in Chapter V was presented as a Paper entitled: "Preliminary Thoughts on the Nature of Knowledge and the Definition and Aims of Education", addressed to the First World Conference on Muslim Education held at Mecca in April 1977. It will appear, together with other selected Papers of the Conference, in a book entitled: Aims and Objectives of Islamic Education, edited with an introduction by the author and published by King Abdulaziz University and Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1979, as one of a series of seven books.

Book excerpt: The denunciation of fundamentalism in France, embodied in the law against the veil and the deportation of imams, has shifted into a systematic attack on all Muslims and Islam. This hostility is rooted in the belief that Islam cannot be integrated into French and, consequently, secular and liberal-society. However, as Olivier Roy makes clear in this book, Muslim intellectuals have made it possible for Muslims to live concretely in a secularized world while maintaining the identity of a "true believer." They have formulated a language that recognizes two spaces: that of religion and that of secular society. Western society is unable to recognize this process, Roy argues, because of a cultural bias that assumes religious practice is embedded within a specific, traditional culture that must be either erased entirely or forced to coexist in a neutral, multicultural space. Instead, Roy shows that new forms of religiosity, such as Islamic fundamentalism and Christian evangelicalism, have come to thrive in post-traditional, secular contexts precisely because they remain detached from any cultural background. In recognizing this, Roy recasts the debate concerning Islam and democracy. Analyzing the French case in particular, in which the tension between Islam and the conception of Western secularism is exacerbated, Roy makes important distinctions between Arab and non-Arab Muslims, hegemony and tolerance, and the role of the umma and the sharia in Muslim religious life. He pits Muslim religious revivalism against similar movements in the West, such as evangelical Protestantism and Jehovah's Witnesses, and refutes the myth of a single "Muslim community" by detailing different groups and their inability to overcome their differences. Roy's rare portrait of the realities of immigrant Muslim life offers a necessary alternative to the popular specter of an "Islamic threat." Supporting his arguments with his extensive research on Islamic history, sociology, and politics, Roy brilliantly demonstrates the limits of our understanding of contemporary Islamic religious practice in the West and the role of Islam as a screen onto which Western societies project their own identity crisis.

Abadir, born in Tanta, Egypt, was living in Alexandria as the colonial period was drawing to an end in the 1950s and early 1960s. At the time, Alexandria, Egypt, was a multiethnic and cosmopolitan city. The social fabric was composed of an aggregate of Egyptians, Europeans, and other minorities. These different communities and denominations coexisted in relative peace and respect of one another. However, despite what was shared in common, Europeans, in general, whether at home or abroad, seemed to be more progressive than most Egyptians. This discrepancy became even more dramatic as one left the urban centers, such as Cairo and Alexandria, and ventured into rural areas where poverty and illiteracy prevailed. Looking back at life in this Mediterranean city, nothing seemed to point to an answer where religion would be a major factor. In fact, in reaction to a prolonged foreign presence, Egyptian society had been undergoing a gradual cultural change characterized by a return to a more restrictive interpretation and practice of Islam. This observation launched the author, Akef Abadir, on a long period of exploration and research that led to the writing of this book. Currently, East-West relationship is experiencing a period of great instability. It has been suggested that the resolution of this conflict requires reaching a political compromise based on mutual acceptance and understanding. To achieve this goal, it is imperative to address the problem of Islamic modernism and examine the context in which it is taking shape. From the authors viewpoint, what has been written regarding Islamic modernity has not provided a comprehensive overview of the subject. This book intends to address this gap and examine the core issues that have confronted Islam starting from the seventh century to the present. The objective of this book is not to predict when Islam will modernize but rather to explore the current process of change taking place and the obstacles it is facing. Through focusing on a series of case studies, the author argues that the relationship between church and state in Italy, and more broadly in Europe, should be reconsidered both to secure religious freedom and general welfare. Working on the concepts of religious freedom, state neutrality, and relationship between church and state, Andrea Pin develops a theoretical framework that combines the state level with the supranational level in the form of the European Convention of Human Rights, which ultimately shapes a unitary but flexible understanding of pluralism. This approach should better accommodate not just Muslims' needs, but religious needs in general in Italy and elsewhere.
