Book excerpt: Bestselling author Dan Alatorre sits down with his four year old daughter and creates a story to capture the imagination of children everywhere!A lonely young mermaid must think of a creative way to rescue stranded pirates. By helping others, she makes new friends. Written by four-year-old Davannah Alatorre, as told to her bestselling author father Dan Alatorre. Great for parents to read to preschoolers or for slightly older kids to read to their parents!Best selling author Dan Alatorre had written several comedic books about life with a baby/toddler/preschooler in the house, and he thought it would be nice to create books that he and his wife could read to their daughter, then evolve into writing books that their daughter could read to them. While working on his 8th or 9th book, Dan saw a spec cover that friend and artist Perry Elisabeth had done, and bought it immediately. "My 4 year old daughter was in the room and I knew she would like it, so I grabbed my video camera and asked her what she thought the picture looked like. She told me it looked like a mermaid who was lonely and sad because she didn't have any friends."With some prodding, my daughter came up with a whole story that I recorded and then wrote down. Like all kids her age, she makes up pretty good stories, and it occurred to me that kids her age might like to hear a story created by another kid their own age, instead of just what we adults think would be interesting for them. I thought it would be fun to write my daughter's stories down and publish them. "I knew it would be fun to have simple cartoon characters portray the characters of the story. My friend Don Castillo was happy to make them - and what a great job he did! Don's art adds so much, bringing a whole new dimension to the book! To further add to kids' enjoyment, we decided to ask them to draw along with the story if they could, so we created a Laguna Facebook Fan page where parents can go to post pictures of Laguna and her friends that their kids draw. When our daughter was younger and we read to our her, we often asked her things like "How many clouds are in that picture?" or, "How many bees are buzzing around the flower? What color are these birds? and Which animal is green? That is another way to make the book interesting on the third and fourth reading."My daughter always likes it when her books or cartoons have some black and white pictures that we can print for her to color with her crayons, so we added those to our Laguna Facebook Fan page, too. "Laguna The Lonely Mermaid" is just one of many stories my daughter has started telling me. Maybe I can catch a few more of them for you."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Mary Poppins, the quintessentially English and utterly magical children's nanny, is remarkable enough. She flew into the lives of the unsuspecting Banks family in a children's book that was instantly hailed as a classic, then became a household name when Julie Andrews stepped into the starring role in Walt Disney's hugely successful and equally classic film. Now she is a sensation all over again-both on Broadway and in Disney's upcoming film Saving Mr. Banks. Saving Mr. Banksretells many of the stories in Valerie Lawson's biography Mary Poppins, She Wrote, including P. L. Travers's move from London to Hollywood and her struggles with Walt Disney as he adapted her novel for the big screen. Travers, whom Disney accused of vanity for "thinking she knows more about Mary Poppins than I do," was a poet and world-renowned author as tart and opinionated as Andrews's big-screen Mary Poppins was cheery and porcelain-beautiful. Yet it was a love of mysticism and magic that shaped Travers's life as well as the very character of Mary Poppins. The clipped, strict, and ultimately mysterious nanny who emerged from her pen was the creation of someone who remained inscrutable and enigmatic to the end of her ninety-six years. Valerie Lawson's illuminating biography provides the first full look at the life of the woman and writer whose personal journey is as intriguing as her beloved characters.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of Labor Day With a New Preface When it was first published in 1998, At Home in the World set off a furor in the literary world and beyond. Joyce Maynard's memoir broke a silence concerning her relationship—at age eighteen—with J.D. Salinger, the famously reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye, then age fifty-three, who had read a story she wrote for The New York Times in her freshman year of college and sent her a letter that changed her life. Reviewers called her book "shameless" and "powerful" and its author was simultaneously reviled and cheered. With what some have viewed as shocking honesty, Maynard explores her coming of age in an alcoholic family, her mother's dream to mold her into a writer, her self-imposed exile from the world of her peers when she left Yale to live with Salinger, and her struggle to reclaim her sense of self in the crushing aftermath of his dismissal of her not long after her nineteenth birthday. A quarter of a century later—having become a writer, survived the end of her marriage and the deaths of her parents, and with an eighteen-year-old daughter of her own—Maynard pays a visit to the man who broke her heart. The story she tells—of the girl she was and the woman she became—is at once devastating, inspiring, and triumphant.

Book excerpt: Don't miss Evermore, the first book in Alyson Noël's #1 New York Times bestselling The Immortals series. Enter an enchanting new world where true love never dies. . . After a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever Bloom can see people's auras, hear their thoughts, and know someone's entire life story by touching them. Going out of her way to avoid human contact and suppress her abilities, she has been branded a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste. Damen is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy. He's the only one who can silence the noise and random energy in her head—wielding a magic so intense, it's as though he can peer straight into her soul. As Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery, she's left with more questions than answers. And she has no idea just who he really is—or what he is. The only thing she knows to be true is that she's falling deeply and helplessly in love with him.
