Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Politique et Société en Sicile, XIIe-XVe Siécles written by Henri Bresc and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 12th century, under its Norman rulers, Sicily stood as one of the most flourishing regions of the Mediterranean; by the late 15th century it had sunk into the state of semi-colonial depression and dependence that has chartacterized so much of its modern history. It is this transformation ” a process of socio-economic change that went hand in hand with political turmoil ” that forms the subject of this volume. Henri Bresc approaches this both from the viewpoint of particular topics, such as the notarial class or the tiny island of Pantelleria, and that of larger themes. One of these is the composition of Sicily's population. These articles trace the deteriorating status of the Arabs and Greeks on the island, the demographic circumstances that brought in new immigrants (notably Albanians, but also corsairs), and the emergence of a society now dominated by its Latin and Italian components. Other articles contrast the intensive suburban agriculture with the empty spaces of the large estates, and throw light on the development of a new landowning structure, based on these estates which were given over to cereals, grown for export in order to meet the financial demands of the long conflict with the Angevins.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity and Local Ecological Knowledge in France by : Laurence Bérard
Download or read book Biodiversity and Local Ecological Knowledge in France written by Laurence Bérard and published by Editions Quae. This book was released on 2005 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of nature held by autochthonous and local communities has been the subject of international talks, notably on biodiversity, but has primarily been studied from an autochthonous angle. French experience of conserving and promoting local know-how, which is the subject of this book, is based on the notions of heritage and of terroirs. This original approach could feed international debate. The book is thus primarily intended for negotiators and political leaders, along with local players who may be interested by the global dimension of such know-how.

Book Synopsis State Law and Legal Positivism by : Badouin Dupret
Download or read book State Law and Legal Positivism written by Badouin Dupret and published by Legal History Library. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume formulates the hypothesis of a truly global revolution that reflected a Great Divide between ancient and new legal regimes. The volume brings together several case studies of transition from an ancient to a new legal regime characterized by the positivization of the law. This was an effect of Western imperialism, but also of local elites' conviction that positive law was an efficient instrument of governance. The contributors emphasize the depth and scale of the positivist legal revolution and explore the phenomenon whether it was the outcome of either direct colonialism (Morocco, Egypt, India) or indigenous reformism (Ottoman empire, China, Japan). Contributors are: Léon Buskens, Jean-Philippe Dequen, Baudouin Dupret, Jean-Louis Halpérin, Béatrice Jaluzot, Gianluca Parolin, Avi Rubin, and Tzung-Mou Wu"--
Book Synopsis South-North Migration of EU Citizens in Times of Crisis by : Jean-Michel Lafleur
Download or read book South-North Migration of EU Citizens in Times of Crisis written by Jean-Michel Lafleur and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book looks at the migration of Southern European EU citizens (from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece) who move to Northern European Member States (Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom) in response to the global economic crisis. Its objective is twofold. First, it identifies the scale and nature of this new Southern European emigration and examines these migrants’ socio-economic integration in Northern European destination countries. This is achieved through an analysis of the most recent data on flows and profiles of this new labour force using sending-country and receiving-country databases. Second, it looks at the politics and policies of immigration, both from the perspective of the sending- and receiving-countries. Analysing the policies and debates about these new flows in the home and host countries’ this book shows how contentious the issue of intra-EU mobility has recently become in the context of the crisis when the right for EU citizens to move within the EU had previously not been questioned for decades. Overall, the strength of this edited volume is that it compiles in a systematic way quantitative and qualitative analysis of these renewed Southern European migration flows and draws the lessons from this changing climate on EU migration.
