Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Women Hymn Writers Besides the enjoyment which The Romance pro vides for all who read it, I must offer a sincere tribute of admiration and appreciation. To me the reading of the ms. Has meant an enrichment of mind, and it has enhanced my estimate of the ministry of those women who, as is so strikingly set forth, have been inspired by the Holy Spirit to wed the deepest spiritual realities to the most delightful flow of rhythm. By his unique presentation of a great subject, the author has proved his right to a place amongst those hymnologists whose contributions have added to the value of the Church's treasures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lady Hymn Writers Hymnology is attracting mu ch notice at the present time, but only a student of the subject can realize how much we owe to lady hymn writers. It takes poetic feeling, fervent devotion, and religious experi ence to make a good hymn, and all these must be conceded to most of our women hymn writers, as we think the specimens here given will prove. Many friends have helped me by indicating sources from whence information could be gleaned, or by furnishing such information. Among them I must name especially Mrs. C. F. Alexander, wife of the Bishop of Derry; Rev. Andrew Carter, editor of the British Messenger Rev. C. G. Reskelly of Littledean; Mr. Arthur E. Grant of Burnley; Mr. George Penn of London, who passed away while the book was in the printer's hands; Miss K. Oxborrow of Ipswich; Miss Birkbeck; Mr. E. J. Ensor, and others. I am also greatly indebted to the Rev. W. Garrett Border's Hymn Lover, and Schafls Library of Religious Poetry, for various particulars concerning hymn writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs From the Hearts of Women: One Hundred Famous Hymns and Their Writers The period covered by the hymn-writers represented in this volume is two hundred years - from Madame Guyon to Mary A. Lathbury. In this group of one hundred hymns are some of the most exquisite verses to be found in the language. They are truly heart-songs, with that touch of Nature which makes the whole World kin. Only from woman's heart can come such blended delicacy of thought, tenderness of tone, and deeply religious feeling. Most of these hymns have long been associated with the music of the Church, and around them cluster many pleasing or sacred memories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Hymnists: A Portrait Gallery of Great Hymn Writers Hose who have written inspiring songs of praise should be numbered among our best friends. This work has been prepared for the purpose of making lovers of hymns better acquainted with these friends. The book is characterized by three im portant features 5 namely, portraits of great hymn writers, biographical Sketches of these authors, and specimens of their work. The portraits speak to the eye and to the heart. We unconsciously make a mental picture of the people concerning whom we read, but unless we have the aid of a portrait we can have no assurance that our mental image is correct. Some of these portraits have never before been given to the public, and most of them are not familiar. They should be studied, lovingly and long, until their features are so photographed upon the mind that they can be recalled at will. The biographical sketches are not long, but they fairly and truly represent the characters of these people inspired of Heaven to teach in holy song. They were men and women of more than ordinary genius, piety, and learning 5 and we are sure that the better they are known the more they will be appreciated. The hymns given may be considered as illustrations of the ability of the authors. Some of them are well known favorites, others, less familiar, are equally deserving favorable attention. A few hymns have been especially written for this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This volume by Gracia Grindal introduces English-speaking readers to several significant yet unsung Lutheran women hymn writers from the sixteenth century to the present. After a brief introductory discussion of Elisabeth Cruciger, the first woman hymn writer of the Reformation, Grindal provides fascinating profiles of these talented Scandinavian women who "preached from home": Dorothe Engelbretsdatter, Birgitte Hertz Boye, Berthe Canutte Aarflot, Lina Sandell, Britt G. Hallqvist, and Lisbeth Smedegaard Andersen. Grindal not only gives a biographical account of each womanher life, her piety, her timesbut also offers sparkling new English translations of each writers key hymns. In the last chapter Grindal recounts her own inspiring journey as a Lutheran woman hymn writer. Her Preaching from Home will open the door to a world previously unknown to most North Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Hymns: Their Authors and History I have written this Preface, in waking and dreaming moments, a good many times. It is borne in upon me - as the Quakers say - that the Courteous Reader and I must make each other's acquaintance in the first person singular before we are separated by the editorial We.' I would not have him mislike me for my complexion, or fancy that, because this is a somewhat elaborate - and, I hope, somewhat accurate - treatise on the Authors and History of Eng lish Hymns, it must therefore be dry reading and useless to all except the musty grubbers among old hymn - books. Nor would I have him - or her, for I know as many women who love hymns as I do men -think me capable of imposing on his credulity with every sort Of ill-grounded or sentimental tradition concerning the origin or the use of these Hymns. The size of the present volume shows what has been omitted as well as in cluded. And as this is in no sense either a work of fiction or of dead statistics, I-have confined myself to the truth as I found it, and have mainly restrained a desire to indulge in the Comparison of Texts and the History of Alterations. I suppose I might add, too, that I have only plucked a few flowers from the outer limits of that great garden of Christian Biography wherein grow Solomon's rose, Christ's lily, Chaucer's daisy, and Robert Robinson's saffron-crocus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have made an amazing, creative, and prolific contribution to hymnody through the centuries of Christian worship. Excluded from liturgical commissions and denied other opportunities for involvement in the worship of the churches, women were able to express and influence spirituality in the writing of hymns. This influence spreads across the whole range of hymn-writing, including writing for children, which was at one time seen as women's natural place, but also the introduction of new voices through translations; engagement in social campaigns such as temperance and the abolition of slavery; mission and evangelism; and the general development of worshipping life. However, with the exception of the nineteenth century, the voices of women have been largely silenced or marginalized. The "Hymn Explosion" of the 1960s onward almost completely ignored women's writing, and there has only recently been something of a recovery. There is much more to Our Song than people think! This book opens up women's writing from the beginnings of Christianity, through the Middle Ages, the development of printing and the rise of popular hymnody to the present day. Living hymn-writers add their voices in a series of biographical "stories," which complete the overarching story of Our Song.
