Download or read book Lady Chatterley's Lover and A Propos of 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-11 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover (and A Propos of 'Lady Chatterley's Lover') is the first ever to restore to Lawrence's most famous novel the words that he wrote. It removes typists' corruptions and compositors' errors, which have marred the text for over sixty years, and includes hundreds of new words, phrases and sentences - and thousands of changes in punctuation. This text projects the sound of Lawrence's voice, embodies the precision of his mature style and reveals the force of his rhetorical power. The introduction establishes an accurate history of composition, typing, printing, publication and reception; the notes freshly identify dozens of difficult allusions; and the appendix, an original essay, explains how Lawrence imaginatively weaves real places and people into the fictional tapestry that he creates. For students and scholars alike, the Cambridge text is the only text of the novel that can be read or quoted with confidence.

Book Synopsis Modernism and the Theater of Censorship by : Adam Parkes
Download or read book Modernism and the Theater of Censorship written by Adam Parkes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Parkes investigates the literary and cultural implications of the censorship encountered by several modern novelists in the early twentieth century. He situates modernism in the context of this censorship, examining the relations between such authors as D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, Radclyffe Hall, and Virginia Woolf and the public controversies generated by their fictional explorations of modern sexual themes. These authors located "obscenity" at the level of stylistic and formal experiment. The Rainbow, Lady Chatterley's Lover, Ulysses, and Orlando dramatized problems of sexuality and expression in ways that subverted the moral, political, and aesthetic premises on which their censors operated. In showing how modernism evolved within a culture of censorship, Modernism and the Theater of Censorship suggests that modern novelists, while shaped by their culture, attempted to reshape it.

Download or read book Filthy Material written by Chris Forster and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernist literature is inextricable from the history of obscenity. The trials of figures like James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, and Radclyffe Hall loom large in accounts twentieth century literature. Filthy Material: Modernism and The Media of Obscenity reveals the ways that debates about obscenity and literature were shaped by changes in the history of media. Judgments about obscenity, which hinged on understanding how texts were circulated and read, were often proxies for the changing place of literature in an age of new technological media. The emergence of film, photography, and new printing technologies shaped how literary value was understood, altering how obscenity was defined and which texts were considered obscene. Filthy Material rereads the history of obscenity in order to discover a history of technological media behind debates about moral corruption and sexual explicitness. The shift from the intense censorship of the early twentieth century to the effective 'end of obscenity' for literature at the middle of the century, it argues, is not simply a product of cultural liberalization but of a changing media ecology. Filthy Material brings together media theory and archival research to offer a fresh account of modernist obscenity and novel readings of works of modernist literature. It sheds new light on figures at the center of modernism's obscenity trials (such as Joyce and Lawrence), demonstrates the relevance of the discourse obscenity to understanding figures not typically associated with obscenity debates (like T. S. Eliot and Wyndham Lewis), and introduces new figures to our account of modernism (like Norah James and Jack Kahane). It reveals how modernist obscenity reflected a contest over the literary in the face of new media technologies.
Download or read book Obelisk written by Neil Pearson and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obelisk: A History of Jack Kahane and the Obelisk Press details the history of one of the most extraordinary—and controversial—publishing enterprises of the twentieth century. Publisher simultaneously of the infamous novels of the literary elite as well as low-budget erotica and “dirty books,” Jack Kahane’s Obelisk Press published the likes of Henry Miller, James Joyce, Anaïs Nin, and D.H. Lawrence, alongside a lengthy list of censor-baiting eccentrics like N. Reynolds Packard, the New York Daily News’ Rome correspondent and the self-styled “Marco Polo of Sex.” Here, for the first time, is the story of this remarkable venture, which captures some of the twentieth century’s most outrageous literary personalities and their often scandalous exploits, including the failed golf club society magazine run by Nin, Miller, and Lawrence Durrell and the tortured relationship between Obelisk author Marjorie Firminger and Wyndham Lewis. A richly illustrated cultural history of 1920s Paris, a fully-narrated bibliography of works published by an unforgettable literary institution, and a glimpse into the remarkable life of the Press’s creator, Jack Kahane, The Obelisk Press is a publishing event not to be missed by anyone with an interest in twentieth-century literary lives and letters.

Download or read book Published in Paris written by Hugh Ford and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Professor Ford tells how writers who are now heros of twentieth-century English literature first got their works into print: James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Anaïs Nin, Lawrence Durrell, Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett - and countless others. Private publishers joined with these writers, gambling with time and money, in order to produce, distribute and sell their publications. Many of these books had been rejected by more affulent, but less adventurous, publishers in Britain and America, and those publishers in Paris who were brave enough to transform the manuscripts into books frequently had to battle against printers, distributors and censors. Among the ranks of the publishers discussed in this book are Syvia Beach, Nancy Cunard, Robert McAlmon, Bill Bird, Samuel Putnam, Jack Kahana, Edward Titus, and Harry and Caresse Crosby. An extremely useful appendix gives a list of private press publications, periodicals and newspapers published in Paris between the wars." - Dust jacket.
