Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labrador Days The ice in the big bay had broken up suddenly that year in the latter part of March before a tremendous ocean swell heaving in beneath it. The piles of firewood and the loads of timber for the summer fishing-rooms on all the outer islands were left standing on the landwash. The dog-tcams usually haul all this out at a stretch gallop over the glare ice which overlies in April the snow-covered surface of winter. For weeks, heavy pack ice, driven to and fro with the tides, but ever held in the bay with the onshore winds, had prevented the small boats freighting more than their families and the merest necessities to the summer stations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labrador: The Country and the People The coming granary for the world's wheat supply was yesterday despised as the land of snows; to-day the subsoil of the world's best wheat land never thaws out, and the frozen valley of the Peace River is vying with the corn lands of the Pharaohs. To us here, away out of the world's hum and bustle, it seems only a question of time. Some day a railway will come to export our stores of mineral wealth, to tap our sources of more than Niagaran power, to bring visitors to scenery of Norwegian quality yet made peculiarly attractive by the entrancing colour plays of Arctic auroras over the fantastic architecture of mountains the like of which can seldom be matched on the earth. Surely it will come to pass that one day another Atlantic City will rise amidst these unexplored but invigorating wilds to lure men and women tired of heat and exhausted by the nerve stress of overcrowded centres. It has seemed appropriate, in this belief, to try to collate available information in the form of a book that should bring within easy reach of the public the facts that are of interest concerning Labrador. It is hoped, also, that such a book will act as an incentive to others to come and pursue still further the studies and explora tions herein described. With these objects in view I sought the help of friends skilled in the various branches of science, as it can now declare the meaning of Labrador, the land and the people. Dr. Reginald A. Daly, Professor of Geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of Boston, had. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The fact that so little can be found relating to the country would be a sufficient ex cuse for re-printing Mr. Burgin's letters; but it is believed that the articles themselves have value not only on account of the freshness of their matter, but the charm of their style. Although written without thought of permanent publication and with no efiort at orderly arrangement, the reader cannot fail to be struck by the vividness of the descriptions and the aptness of the language in these compositions. There are occa sioual sentences which haunt the mind like music. Mr. Durgin inherited from both parents a passionate love of Nature and a sensitive appreciation of its beauties; and he was endowed with the rarer gift of power to paint the scenes that he loved so well in a way to make eu during mental pictures for others. Heroes on the field are as numerous to-day, if not more so, than at any period Since the dawn of the missionary enterprise over a century ago. TO this company Dr. Grenfell Of Labrador belongs, to whose unremitting and unwearying labours is due the marvellous work established in that wild and desolate region under the agis of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. The narrative of this effort to raise humanity almost reads like a romance taken from the pages of modern fiction. At every point in a remarkable life-story relating to the up lifting Oi a lost and degraded people, the Doctor makes very strong Claim upon the admiration of his fellow men. He is unquestionably the embodiment of a type Of heroic manhood at once courageous, resourceful, vigilant, pitying, for the sake Of the human wreckage on Labrador's rugged shores. What wonder that he is altogether regarded as the greatest man who has hitherto appeared in Labrador. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I wish you could stay and see some other sections of the work. When you joined us I hesitated at first, thinking perhaps it would be better to show you the poorer parts of our country, and not the better off - but decided to let you drop in and drop out again of the ordinary routine, and not bother to show you sights.' Still I am sorry that you did not see some other sections of the people. There is to me in life always an infinite satisfaction in accomplishing anything. I don't care so much what it is. A perceptible current, a questioning word, the turn of a paddle would have set us right. No current was noticed, no word was spoken, and the paddle sent us straight toward those blue hills yonder, where Suffering and Starvation and Death were hidden and waiting for us. How little we expected to meet these grim strangers then. That July day came back to me as if it had been but the day before. I believe I never missed Hubbard so much as at that moment. I never felt his loss so keenly as then. An almost irresistible impulse seized me to go on into our old trail and hurry to the camp where we had left him that stormy October day and find if he were not after all still there and waiting for me to come back to him. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vikings of to-Day: Or Life and Medical Work Among the Fishermen of Labrador At the present time - near to the close of the nineteenth century - we are being constantly reminded, with somewhat unpleasant persistence, that the human race is degenerating and that the changes of decay are most marked among the most civilised people. It is among the young men especially that these unwelcome signs of the times are assumed to be the more noticeable. It is claimed that the splendid physique and the heroic courage of the British race are both deteriorating, and that those who seek for the time of noble deeds and sturdy hearts must turn back to the days of Elizabeth - to the stirring times of Drake and Raleigh. There is said to be no longer a field for that pluck and daring, or for that determination and persistency, which at one period made the name of the British famous throughout the world. It would be idle, in this place, to inquire into the substance of these meanings and regrets, and it would be reasonable perhaps to allow that there may be some real or apparent element of truth in these lamentations over the man of the present. Be this as it may, it will be agreeable to those who are most concerned in these forebodings to turn to the record contained in this volume, while those who view with some disgust the fashionable youth of the day, with his many effeminacies and affectations, will find in the pages which follow some wholesome relief to their distaste. Originally published in 1921, this is one of the earliest detailed works on Retrievers and Retriever Trials. It is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. Two hundred and sixteen pages contain seven detailed chapters: - The Flat-Coated Retriever. Early History. - The Flat-Coated Retriever. History. - The History of the Labrador. - The Labrador at Field Trials. - Curly-Coated and Golden Retrievers. - The Future of Retriever Trials by Captain Harry Eley. - A Record of Retriever Trials by Walter Baxendale. This is a fascinating read for any Retriever enthusiast or historian of the breeds, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. "Men who shoot without dogs tire of sport early in life, whilst all who are fond of animals and of training them retain a long lasting pleasure in it." F.R. Bevan. 1891. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey to the Grand Falls of Labrador We sailed from New York June 23d, on the steamship Portia, and arrived at St. Johns, Newfoundland, on the twenty-ninth of the same month. After an unexpected and vexatious delay here of over two weeks, we sailed from St. Johns on July 15th, on the small steamship Curlew, the boat engaged by the Newfoundland Government to carry the mails on the Labrador coast during the summer. After calling at several ports on the north-eastern coast of New foundland, our stanch little craft turned north, and, steam ing through the dense fogs of the Strait of Belle Isle, we soon caught our first glimpse of the Labrador coast. The four days' sail along this coast was the most enjoyable part of the voyage. Space will not permit me to make any extended reference to the novelty and grandeur of the scenery which formed so impressive an introduction to this rugged north-land which was to be the scene of our wanderings. The shores presented a bold, irregular line of hills, wild and desolate in their aspect, and for the most part entirely destitute of verdure their precipitous bases presenting bold headlands to the waves of the Atlantic. Icebergs soon became frequent. In one day I counted twenty-six. Our fellow-passengers, most of whom were engaged in the fisheries, viewed these Polar visitors with the indifference born of familiarity; but for my part, I regarded these majestic, luminous white masses with the keenest interest.
