Book excerpt: Strong household consumption coupled with investment were the key factors underpinning Indonesia's economic performance in 2014. Growth in 2014 was accompanied by solid gains in the labour market, with evidence of employment expanding and conditions of work improving. However, economic performance during the first quarter of 2015 slowed to 4.71 per cent (yoy), largely attributed to a weakening of government consumption, the slowing of investment in the construction sector and deteriorating commodity prices.

Book excerpt: The book focuses on Indonesia's most pressing labor market challenges and associated policy options to achieve higher and more inclusive economic growth. The challenges consist of creating jobs for and the skills in a youthful and increasingly better educated workforce, and raising the productivity of less-educated workers to meet the demands of the digital age. The book deals with a range of interrelated topics---the changing supply and demand for labor in relation to the shift of workers out of agriculture; urbanization and the growth of megacities; raising the quality of schooling for new jobs in the digital economy; and labor market policies to improve both labor standards and productivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to explore labour law's conceptual and normative narrative. If labour law is informed by the wider political and economic landscape within which it operates, then given the declining prevalence of the post-war model of full employment within a formal welfare state regime, what shape does or should labour law assume in response to the transformation of the political economy in countries of the global North? Correspondingly, what is the proper role to be played by labour law and labour relations institutions in the development process within industrialising countries of the global South, where informal employment has long been, and remains, the predominant form? Drawing on the expertise of leading labour law scholars, this collection addresses those questions by examining the growth and continued prevalence of informality. Offering research that is both empirically grounded and doctrinally astute, the book explores the changing character of labour law in the global North and South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elaboration is a political analysis within sociological theory. The study has as subject the main propositions of a theoretical framework on the current structure of employment and on the question of the abolition of (the dependent and therefore) wage labour. I note that the latter does not have, as a precondition, the overcoming of capitalism. The analysis, in the form of an intellectual test, examines the methods and the thoroughness of enforcing the new situation of a single work status within the economic activity. This type of labour has morphological similarities to self-employment or otherwise to the own account workers. The basic starting point of the study is the finding that many enterprises worldwide have, already and in many of the aspects of production and business organization, overcome the functions and the classical forms of utilization of wage labour. The creation of working groups, the work from a distance, the instances of self-management, along with the extensive use of part-time workers or workers in various flexible work statuses, the cooperation with independent professionals, through outsourcing, communicates with the changes in the old type of enterprise’s management. However, wage labour is retained as an obsession. The economic need for such maintenance, beyond the habit, can hardly be explained. The only remaining reason might be the need for entrepreneurs to command directly large groups of people, while their economic interests pushing in other directions. The survey, at a glance, examines the following issues: i) Major theoretical approaches and debates on the characteristics of capitalist society and the consolidation of wage labour, ii) The evolution of the division of labour and the industrial changes during ninetieth and twentieth century, iii) The realities of employment, through empirical data, in six groups of countries, worldwide, iv) The evidences of the real overcoming of wage labour, through the mainstreaming strategies of the contemporary enterprises, despite the maintaining of the typical form of wage dependency, v) The elaboration on the transformation of the model of employment under the process for the imposition of autonomous labour and the abolition of wage status, through the political and finally the legal interference, in the modern state, vi) The consideration on the pattern of the social structure, which could be formed, during the evolution and after the end of the previous project, and vii) The importance of the procedure to the social and political system. In the final analysis, there is an important suggestion: The autonomous worker would be in equilibrium with the status of citizen. A wage labourer has never had a similar balance. Especially when he was under the authority of an employer during the hours of work he was not, exactly, a citizen. We owe the restoration of social and political equilibrium because of the faith in our civilization. Freedom, work autonomy and democracy are the only limitations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil palm plantations and smallholdings are expanding massively in Indonesia. Proponents highlight the potential for job creation and poverty alleviation, but scholars are more cautious, noting that social impacts of oil palm are not well understood. This report draws upon primary research in West Kalimantan to explore the gendered dynamics of oil palm among smallholders and plantation workers. It concludes that the social and economic benefits of oil palm are real, but restricted to particular social groups. Among smallholders in the research area, couples who were able to sustain diverse farming systems and add oil palm to their repertoire benefited more than transmigrants, who had to survive on limited incomes from a 2-ha plot.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals are equipped with a wide range of knowledge that enhances their employability, health, family life, and social engagement. On this basis, providing equality for all has been set to be achieved as one of the United Nations sustainable development priorities. However, the international understandings are not only of what equality and inclusivity entail but also the social vision to achieve social justice. Best practices provide a meaningful cross-national discussion with respect to the following topics: power relations within research, social inequalities in society, science research for social justice, the redefinition of the notion of social justice, education for social justice, spatial justice, the research of gender and marginalized groups, the re-conceptualization of the epistemological foundation of research, hegemonic discourses on research, science technology for social justice and welfare, as well as culture and social justice. This edited book aims to provide a new perspective for other benefits of research because generally, the research carried out only aims to answer scientific problems and often override aspects of humanities. In response to these concerns, the book attempts to re-map the main objectives of the research. The authors in this book offer new perspectives, especially in formulating the purposes of the studies they will perform. Therefore, this book presents a unique review of research with a variety of approaches that are coherent with the state of society in the world, followed by eleven scopes of various cases from a variety of perspectives that highlight theoretical and methodological questions about research and social justice. This book presents outstanding applications through multiple types of approaches that are relevant to the current context of world community issues. The articles in this book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers who are interested in the social field, especially research for social justice.

Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of global and regional trends in employment, unemployment, labour force participation and productivity, as well as dimensions of job quality such as employment status, informal employment and working poverty. It also examines income and social developments, and provides an indicator of social unrest. Key findings are that are unemployment is projected to rise after a long period of stability, and that many people are working fewer paid hours than they would like or lack adequate access to paid work. The report also takes a close look at decent work deficits and persistent labour market inequalities, noting that income inequality is higher than previously thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the linkages between age-related pension expenditures and the fiscal space needed to fund them, as well as to organize the mix of financing methods with different risk-sharing arrangements. After critically assessing the existing models projecting age-related expenditure in the literature, the book focuses on the case studies of these inter-linkages in four highly-populated East Asian countries, namely China, Indonesia, India, and Japan. Nearly two- fifths of the global population live in these countries. Therefore, how these inter-linkages manifest themselves and the initiatives in these countries for finding fiscal space will have an impact on how the ageing issues are addressed globally. This book does several distinguishing characteristics, including exploration of inter-linkages between age-related expenditure and fiscal space, and application of country-specific methods to explore these linkages, rather than relying standard macroeconomic model. In the process, the studies also bring out the limitations of standardized model used in the literatures. Scholars and policy makers interested in the subject will definitely find the book of valuable use.
