Book excerpt: In Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT) is a candidate remediation technology for dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). However, the relationships between gas production, gas flow, and contaminant mass removal during ISTT are not fully understood. A laboratory study was conducted to assess the degree of mass removal, as well as the gas generation rate and the composition of the gas phase as a function of different heating times and initial DNAPL saturations. The temperature of the contaminated soil was measured continuously using a thermocouple to identify periods of heating, co-boiling and boiling. Samples were collected from the aqueous and DNAPL phase of the condensate, as well as from the source soil, at different heating times, and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. In addition to laboratory experiments, a mathematical model was developed to predict the co-boiling temperature and transient composition of the gas phase during heating of a uniform source. Predictions for single-component sources matched the experiments well, with a co-boiling plateau at 88°C ± 1°C for experiments with tetrachloroethene (PCE) and water. A comparison of predicted and observed boiling behaviour showed a discrepancy at the end of the co-boiling period, with earlier temperature increases occurring in the experiments. The results of this study suggest that temperature observations related to the co-boiling period during ISTT applications may not provide a clear indication of complete NAPL mass removal, and that multi-compartment modeling associated with various NAPL saturation zones is required to consider mass-transfer limitations within the heated zone. Predictions for multi-component DNAPL, containing 1,2-Dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), PCE and Chlorobenzene, showed no co-boiling plateau. CB is the least volatile component and dominates in the vapour phase at the end of the co-boiling process, and it can be used as an indicator of the end of the co-boiling stage. Two field NAPL mixtures were simulated using the screening-level analytical model to demonstrate its potential application on ISTT. The two mixtures with similar composition but different mass fractions result in distinct co-boiling temperature and mass transfer behaviour. The non-volatile component in the NAPL mixture results in larger amounts of water consumption and longer ISTT operation time.

Book excerpt: A laboratory scale study was conducted to evaluate the thermal remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in a saturated groundwater system using electrical resistance heating (ERH). Two experiments were conducted using a two-dimensional polycarbonate test cell, the first consisting of a single pool of TCE perched above a capillary barrier, the second consisting of two pools of TCE each perched on separate capillary barriers. Temperature data was collected during the heating process from an array of 32 thermocouples located throughout the test cell. Visualization of the vaporization of liquid phase TCE, as well as the upward migration of the produced vapour was recorded using a digital camera. Chemical testing was performed 48 hours after experiment termination to measure post heating soil concentrations. A co-boiling plateau in temperature was found to be a clear and evident earmark of an ongoing phase change in the pooled TCE. Temperature was found to increase more rapidly in the second experiment that included a fully spanning barrier. As temperatures increased above the co-boiling plateau, vapour rise originating from the source zone was observed, and was found to create a high saturation gas zone beneath the upper capillary barrier when no clear pathway was available for it to escape upwards. When the source zones had reached the target temperature of 100°C and the ERH process stopped, this high saturation gas zone condensed, leading to elevated TCE concentrations below as well as within the capillary barrier itself. The water table within the experimental cell was also noted to drop measurably when the gas zone collapsed. Post-testing chemical analysis showed reductions in TCE concentrations of over 99.04% compared to the source zone, although due to condensation of entrapped gas and convective mixing, there was a net redistribution of TCE within the experimental domain, especially within confined areas below the capillary barriers. A secondary set of experiments were conducted using a homogenous silica sand pack with no chemical contaminants to determine the effect, if any, of the wave shape of electrical input on the ERH process. It was found that in early time heating, square wave inputs consistently produced a more localized heating pattern when compared to the standard sine wave electrical input. This effect equalized between the two experiments as the ERH process went on, perhaps due to the increased dominance of conduction and convection as the mode of heat transfer in the test cell at higher temperatures. It is believed that the localization of heating in square wave experiments is due to a consistent power supply due to the lack of a sinusoidal ramping in power delivery.

Book excerpt: Thermal remediation involves heating subsurface environments and collecting fluids in order to recover contaminants such as tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE). While increasing subsurface temperature can lead to changes in the distribution of contaminants between the solid, liquid, and gas phases, there is also an increased potential for PCE and TCE to degrade. This work was performed to determine the rate of PCE and TCE degradation and products formed in laboratory-scale experiments designed to simulate thermal remediation conditions. The conditions during transport of gas-phase TCE were simulated using flow-through experiments in the temperature range from 60 to 800C. Degradation of TCE was not evident at temperatures of less than 240C; however, chloroacetic acids, which comprised less than 0.1% of the influent TCE on a carbon basis, were detected. At temperatures greater than 300C, TCE readily degraded where the identities of the degradation products were a function of oxygen and water content. With oxygen present, TCE degraded to form CO, phosgene, CO2 with minor amounts of hexachloroethane, PCE, and carbon tetrachloride. Increasing the amount of water vapor was found to decrease the amount of TCE degraded. Vapor recovery systems used during thermal treatments are anticipated to capture these TCE degradation products. However, the amount of missing carbon ... in experiments completed at 800C makes the prospect of recovering all TCE degradation products doubtful. Experiments were conducted using hermetically sealed ampules to simulate heating dissolved phase PCE and TCE over periods of up to 75 days. At 120C, the first-order TCE degradation half-life was 330 days and the degradation products included CO and CO2, glycolate, formate, and chloride. The rate of TCE disappearance was increased with the addition of 1% (wt.) goethite, which suggests that the presence of iron bearing soil minerals can increase rates of TCE degradation during thermal treatment. In contaminated field samples, TCE was found to degrade to form cis-1,2-dichloroethylene at 95C coincident with the formation of hydrogen gas. Degradation of PCE was not evident in field samples or in deionized water and is not expected to degrade during thermal remediation at temperatures below 95C.
