Although substantial research has been devoted to SOA formation and evolution, the modeled and lab-generated SOA are still low in mass and degree of oxidation compared to ambient measurements. In order to compensate for these discrepancies, the aqueous processing pathway has been brought to attention. The atmospheric waters serve as aqueous reaction media for dissolved organics to undergo further oxidation, oligomerization, or other functionalization reactions, which decreases the vapor pressure while increasing the oxidation state of carbon atoms. Field evidence for aqueous processing requires the identification of tracer products such as organosulfates. We synthesized the standards for two organosulfates, glycolic acid sulfate and lactic acid sulfate, in order to measure their aerosol-state concentration from five distinct locations via filter samples. The water-extracted filter samples were analyzed by LC-MS. Lactic acid sulfate and glycolic acid sulfate were detected in urban locations in the United States, Mexico City, and Pakistan with varied concentrations, indicating their potential as tracers. We studied the aqueous processing reaction between glyoxal and nitrogen-containing species such as ammonium and amines exclusively by NMR spectrometry. The reaction products formic acid and several imidazoles along with the quantified kinetics were reported. The brown carbon generated from these reactions were quantified optically by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The organic-phase reaction between oxygen molecule and alkenes photosensitized by [alpha]-dicarbonyls were studied in the same manner. We observed the fast kinetics transferring alkenes to epoxides under simulated sunlight. Statistical estimations indicate a very effective conversion of aerosol-phase alkenes to epoxides, potentially forming organosulfates in a deliquescence event and increasing aerosol mass. Finally, we built a containerless apparatus to study aqueous processing reactions using an acoustic levitator paired with a mass spectrometer. The levitator is capable of trapping droplets with the size of 80-500 [mu]m in diameter for over eight hours. The apparatus is also capable of drying and wetting the droplet in a controllable manner. We performed am example reaction between glyoxal and ammonium sulfate using this instrument, and showed that it could qualitatively monitor aqueous processing reactions.

Book excerpt: Fine particulate matter (PM, or "aerosol") in the atmosphere affects the Earth's radiative balance and is one of the most important risk factors leading to premature mortality worldwide. Thus, understanding the processes that control the loading and chemical composition of PM in the atmosphere is key to understanding air quality and climate. However, the chemistry of organic aerosol (OA), which comprises a significant fraction of submicron atmospheric PM, is immensely complex due to the vast number of organic compounds in the atmosphere and their numerous reaction pathways. Laboratory experiments have generally focused on the initial formation of OA from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but have neglected processes that can change the composition and loading of OA over longer timescales ("aging"). This thesis describes several laboratory studies that better constrain the effect of two important aging processes over timescales of several days, the oxidation of gas phase species to form secondary OA (condensation) and the reaction of gas phase radicals with organic molecules in the particle phase (heterogeneous oxidation). First, the oxidation of biomass burning emissions is studied by exposing particles and gases present in smoke to hydroxyl radicals (OH). Increases in organic aerosol mass are observed for all fuels burned, and the amount of OA formed is explained well by the extent of aging and the total concentration of measured organic gases. Second, the effect of particle morphology on the rate of heterogeneous oxidation is examined by comparing the oxidation of particles with thin organic coatings to the oxidation of pure organic particles. Results show that morphology can have a strong impact on oxidation kinetics and that particles with high organic surface area to volume ratios can be rapidly oxidized. Third, the molecular products from the heterogeneous OH oxidation of a single model compound (squalane) are measured. Formation of a range of gas-phase oxygenated VOCs is observed, indicating the importance of fragmentation reactions that decrease OA mass, and providing insight into heterogeneous reaction mechanisms. The results from this work emphasize that the concentration and composition of OA can change dramatically over multiple days of atmospheric oxidation.

Improvements to air quality require insight into the many reactive intermediates that lead to SOA formation, of which only a small fraction have been measured at the molecular level. This thesis describes the chemistry of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from several atmospherically relevant hydrocarbon precursors. Photooxidation experiments of methoxyphenol and phenolic compounds and C12 alkanes were conducted in the Caltech Environmental Chamber. These experiments include the first photooxidation studies of these precursors run under sufficiently low NOx levels, such that RO2 + HO2 chemistry dominates, an important chemical regime in the atmosphere. Using online Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometery (CIMS), key gas-phase intermediates that lead to SOA formation in these systems were identified. With complementary particle-phase analyses, chemical mechanisms elucidating the SOA formation from these compounds are proposed. Three methoxyphenol species (phenol, guaiacol, and syringol) were studied to model potential photooxidation schemes of biomass burning intermediates. SOA yields (ratio of mass of SOA formed to mass of primary organic reacted) exceeding 25% are observed. Aerosol growth is rapid and linear with the organic conversion, consistent with the formation of essentially non-volatile products. Gas and aerosol-phase oxidation products from the guaiacol system show that the chemical mechanism consists of highly oxidized aromatic species in the particle phase. Syringol SOA yields are lower than that of phenol and guaiacol, likely due to unique chemistry dependent on methoxy group position. The photooxidation of several C12 alkanes of varying structure n-dodecane, 2-methylundecane, cyclododecane, and hexylcyclohexane) were run under extended OH exposure to investigate the effect of molecular structure on SOA yields and photochemical aging. Peroxyhemiacetal formation from the reactions of several multifunctional hydroperoxides and aldehyde intermediates was found to be central to organic growth in all systems, and SOA yields increased with cyclic character of the starting hydrocarbon. All of these studies provide direction for future experiments and modeling in order to lessen outstanding discrepancies between predicted and measured SOA.

Book excerpt: The products and mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from reactions of 1-alkenes, internal alkenes, and 2-methyl-1-alkenes with OH radicals in the presence of NO[subscript x] were investigated in an environmental chamber and the results used to develop quantitative models for SOA formation. Aerosol chemical composition was analyzed using a thermal desorption particle beam mass spectrometer (TDPBMS), and multifunctional organic nitrate products were quantified using a high-performance liquid chromatograph with UV-vis detector and identified using the TDPBMS and 1H NMR. The major products observed in reactions of linear alkenes were [beta]-hydroxynitrates, dihydroxynitrates, cyclic hemiacetals, dihydrofurans, and dimers formed from dihydroxycarbonyls. Trihydroxynitrates and trihydroxycarbonyls were observed in reactions of 2-methyl-1-alkenes, in addition to the products listed above. Dimers were not observed, apparently because electron donation by the additional methyl group (compared to linear 1-alkenes) reduces the driving force for hemiacetal formation. The measured yields of [beta]-hydroxynitrates, dihydroxynitrates, and trihydroxynitrates were used to calculate relative ratios of 1.0:1.9:4.3 for forming primary, secondary, and tertiary [beta]-hydroxyalkyl radicals by OH radical addition to the C=C double bond, and branching ratios of 0.12, 0.15, and 0.25 for forming [beta]-hydroxynitrates from reactions of primary, secondary, and tertiary â-hydroxyperoxy radicals with NO. The trends are consistent with expected relative stabilities of [beta]-hydroxyalkyl radicals and ß-hydroxyperoxy radical-NO complexes. It should be possible to use these values to estimate product yields from similar reactions of other alkenes. Comparison of measured and model-calculated SOA yields showed that in some cases the models provide accurate predictions of SOA yields, but that uncertainties in gas- and particle-phase chemistry and gas-particle partitioning can lead to significant discrepancies. More limited environmental chamber studies were also carried out on SOA formation from reactions of linear alkenes with NO3 radicals. The major products were [beta]-hydroxynitrates, [beta]-carbonylnitrates, dihydroxynitrates, and hydroxy- and oxo- dinitrooxytetrahydrofurans, which had not been observed previously. It was observed that isomerization of [delta]-hydroxycarbonyls to cyclic hemiacetals, followed by dehydration to highly reactive dihydrofurans that can be further oxidized, can be important sources of SOA from reactions of alkenes with OH and NO3 radicals.

This organic aerosol comes from a variety of sources; primary organic aerosol emitted directly from combustion process, and secondary aerosol formed in the atmosphere from condensable vapors. This secondary organic aerosol (SOA) can result from both anthropogenic and biogenic sources. In rural areas of the United States, organic aerosols can be a significant part of the aerosol load in the atmosphere. However, the extent to which gas-phase biogenic emissions contribute to this organic load is poorly understood. Such an understanding is crucial to properly apportion the effect of anthropogenic emissions in these rural areas that are sometimes dominated by biogenic sources. To help gain insight on the effect of biogenic emissions on particle concentrations in rural areas, we have been conducting a field measurement program at the University of California Blodgett Forest Research Facility. The field location includes has been used to acquire an extensive suite of measurements resulting in a rich data set, containing a combination of aerosol, organic, and nitrogenous species concentration and meteorological data with a long time record. The field location was established in 1997 by Allen Goldstein, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California at Berkeley to study interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere. The Goldstein group focuses on measurements of concentrations and whole ecosystem biosphere-atmosphere fluxes for volatile organic compounds (VOC's), oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOC's), ozone, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy. Another important collaborator at the Blodgett field location is Ronald Cohen, a professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of California at Berkeley. At the Blodgett field location, his group his group performs measurements of the concentrations of important gas phase nitrogen compounds. Experiments have been ongoing at the Blodgett field site since the fall of 2000, and have included portions of the summer and fall of 2001, 2002, and 2003. Analysis of both the gas and particle phase data from the year 2000 show that the particle loading at the site correlates with both biogenic precursors emitted in the forest and anthropogenic precursors advected to the site from Sacramento and the Central Valley of California. Thus the particles at the site are affected by biogenic processing of anthropogenic emissions. We developed a gas-phase photochemical model of an OFR which was used to 1) explore the sensitivities of key output variables (e.g., OH exposure, O3, HO2/OH) to controlling factors (e.g., water vapor, external reactivity, UV irradiation), 2) develop simplified OH exposure estimation equations, 3) investigate under what conditions non-OH chemistry may be important, and 4) help guide design of future experiments to avoid conditions with undesired chemistry for a wide range of conditions applicable to the ambient, laboratory, and source studies. Uncertainties in the model were quantified and modeled OH exposure was compared to tracer decay measurements of OH exposure in the lab and field. Laboratory studies using OFRs were conducted to explore aerosol yields and composition from anthropogenic and biogenic VOC as well as crude oil evaporates. Various aspects of the modeling and laboratory results and tools were applied to interpretation of ambient and source measurements using OFR. Additionally, novel measurement methods were used to study gas/particle partitioning. The research conducted was highly successful and details of the key results are summarized in this report through narrative text, figures, and a complete list of publications acknowledging this grant.

The complexity of SOA composition and formation processes has hampered efforts to fully characterize their impacts, and to predict how those impacts will be affected by changes in climate and human activity. Here, we explore SOA formation in the laboratory by coupling an environmental chamber with a suite of analytical tools, including a gas-phase mass spectrometry technique that is well suited for tracking the hydrocarbon oxidation processes that drive SOA formation. Focusing on the oxidation of isoprene by the nitrate radical, NO3, we find that reactions of peroxy radicals (RO2) to form ROOR dimers is an important process in SOA formation. The other gas-phase products of these RO2 reactions differ from what is expected from studies of simpler radicals, indicating that more studies are necessary to fully constrain RO2 chemistry. Finally, we examine the role of heterogeneous oxidation as a sink of organic aerosol and a source of oxygenated volatile organic compounds in the free troposphere.
