Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Physics a Students Manual for Colleges, and Scientific Schools This Manual is designed to be a student's handbook for the performance of experimental problems in physics. The selection of problems and their treatment is the result of twelve years of teaching experience, and the descriptions of most of the exercises have been used in typewritten form for.the past six years. The grade of work is that of the course in general physics in colleges and technical schools. It is presumed that the student has had a course in preparatory laboratory physics, and that these exer cises will be accompanied, or preceded, by a full course of lec tures and recitations in general physics, including instruction in the principles and manipulations of the various experimental operations. One hundred and twen ty-eight exercises are described. Some of these, however, such as reading the barometer, determining the heat equivalent of a calorimeter, etc., are usually performed in connection with other problems. There is a break in the serial numbers of the exercises at the end of each part, to permit the assignment of numbers to additional exercises in their proper groups. The definite problems given under each heading have been formulated with much care, to cover as wide a range of the subject as is possible. They are based upon the work of the sophomore class in the Case School of Applied Science, and each one represents what may be expected of one or two students in a laboratory exercise of three hours' duration. Shorter exercises, or exercises covered by particular articles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A general discussion of how to measure a thing is, in their opinion, not a satisfactory basis for the labora tory work of a student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experiments in Physics: Laboratory Instruction for College Classes In preparing this text-book for use in Physical Labora tories, the needs of all three of these classes of students have been borne in mind, how successfully it is not possi ble to say. The only experiments described are quantita tive, because it is assumed that purely qualitative ones are demonstrated in the lecture-room. Those experiments which are suited to a definite student or to a definite class must be selected by the instructor; and it is impossible to give any precise statement as to which are best adapted for any particular purpose. It has been impossible, of course, to include all the experiments which might be desired; but it is hoped that no important principle or piece of appara tus has been slighted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physics, Vol. 1: A Laboratory Manual Fro Colleges and Technical Schools The authors believe that physical laboratory work should accompany lecture and recitation work in physics from the beginning of the study of this science in the college or technical school, and they believe that a laboratory manual should set forth a series of definite exercises. A general discussion of how to measure a thing is, in their opinion, not a satisfactory basis for the laboratory work of a student. This laboratory manual has been prepared with these ideas in mind. A group of students who are beginning a laboratory course on the basis of this manual should be required to study the intro-ductory chapter, and to solve the problems illustrating the calculation of probable error. The system which has been used with great satisfaction by the authors in the assignment of laboratory exercises is described on page 2. The authors believe that one of the most important aspects of laboratory work in physics is that it gives to the student a series of more or less distinctly theoretical problems based upon experimental data obtained by themselves, and in accordance with this idea, the authors believe that a student should be required to work up his laboratory reports outside of the laboratory as specified on page 3. This manual is issued in three small volumes. The first volume is devoted to Precise Measurements and to Experiments in Mechanics and Heat; the second volume is devoted to Elementary and Advanced Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism; and the third volume is devoted to Photometry and to Experiments in Light and Sound.
