Book excerpt: These volumes of Methods in Enzymology contain the protocols that made up the on-line Methods Navigator. Our philosophy when we selected the protocols to include in the Navigator was that they should be for techniques useful in any biomedical laboratory, regardless of the system the lab studies. Each protocol was written by researchers who use the technique routinely, and in many cases by the people who actually developed the procedure in the first place. The protocols are very detailed and contain recipes for the necessary buffers and reagents, as well as flow-charts outlining the steps involved. Many of the chapters have accompanying videos demonstrating key parts of the procedures. The volumes are broken into distinct areas: DNA methods; Cell-based methods; lipid, carbohydrate and miscellaneous methods; RNA methods; Protein methods. Our goal is that these protocols will be useful for everyone in the lab, from undergraduates and rotation students to seasoned post-doctoral fellows. We hope that these volumes will become dog-eared and well-worn in your laboratory, either physically or electronically.

Book Synopsis Glycoscience by : Bertram O. Fraser-Reid
Download or read book Glycoscience written by Bertram O. Fraser-Reid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-14 with total page 2847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a reflection of the quantum leap that has been made in the study of glycostructures, the first edition of this book has been completely revised and updated. The editors give up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology in the form of a completely comprehensive survey. Glycostructures play highly diverse and crucial roles in a myriad of organisms and important systems in biology, physiology, medicine, bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and the chemistry behind them. While many facts remain undiscovered, this MRW has been contributed to by a large number of the world’s leading researchers in the field.
Book Synopsis Transforming Glycoscience by : National Research Council
Download or read book Transforming Glycoscience written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new focus on glycoscience, a field that explores the structures and functions of sugars, promises great advances in areas as diverse as medicine, energy generation, and materials science, this report finds. Glycans-also known as carbohydrates, saccharides, or simply as sugars-play central roles in many biological processes and have properties useful in an array of applications. However, glycans have received little attention from the research community due to a lack of tools to probe their often complex structures and properties. Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future presents a roadmap for transforming glycoscience from a field dominated by specialists to a widely studied and integrated discipline, which could lead to a more complete understanding of glycans and help solve key challenges in diverse fields.

Book Synopsis Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests - E-Book by : Alan H. B. Wu
Download or read book Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests - E-Book written by Alan H. B. Wu and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 1856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Norbert Tietz's classic handbook presents information on common tests as well as rare and highly specialized tests and procedures - including a summary of the utility and merit of each test. Biological variables that may affect test results are discussed, and a focus is placed on reference ranges, diagnostic information, clinical interpretation of laboratory data, interferences, and specimen types. New and updated content has been added in all areas, with over 100 new tests added. Tests are divided into 8 main sections and arranged alphabetically. Each test includes necessary information such as test name (or disorder) and method, specimens and special requirements, reference ranges, chemical interferences and in vivo effects, kinetic values, diagnostic information, factors influencing drug disposition, and clinical comments and remarks. The most current and relevant tests are included; outdated tests have been eliminated. Test index (with extensive cross references) and disease index provide the reader with an easy way to find necessary information Four new sections in key areas (Preanalytical, Flow Cytometry, Pharmacogenomics, and Allergy) make this edition current and useful. New editor Alan Wu, who specializes in Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this edition. The Molecular Diagnostics section has been greatly expanded due to the increased prevalence of new molecular techniques being used in laboratories. References are now found after each test, rather than at the end of each section, for easier access.
Book Synopsis Carbohydrate Chemistry by : John F Kennedy
Download or read book Carbohydrate Chemistry written by John F Kennedy and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbohydrate Chemistry provides review coverage of all publications relevant to the chemistry of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides in a given year. The amount of research in this field appearing in the organic chemical literature is increasing because of the enhanced importance of the subject, especially in areas of medicinal chemistry and biology. In no part of the field is this more apparent than in the synthesis of oligosaccharides required by scientists working in glycobiology. Clycomedicinal chemistry and its reliance on carbohydrate synthesis is now very well established, for example, by the preparation of specific carbohydrate- based antigens, especially cancer-specific oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. Coverage of topics such as nucleosides, amino-sugars, alditols and cyclitols also covers much research of relevance to biological and medicinal chemistry. Each volume of the series brings together references to all published work in given areas of the subject and serves as a comprehensive database for the active research chemist Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.
